Still I don't know why the series is called "Dragon Age"

Obviously Dragons should have a central role in the events and the main plot, but still I just can't see it.

When I think of Inquisition... Dragons were in Thedas, but from where do they arrive? From the Fade? Moreover it seems they have no purpose but being killed from the player.

Dragons appeareances have been regular (Stolen Throne, DAO Sacred Ashes, DA2 Sundermount, Inquisition, Dawn of the Seeker) but look very accidental at this time and not having a serious impact on the events.

I guess one day their role will be revealed, but.. we have 3 "Dragon Age" games out already!

I always have the statement Yavanna made in the Silent Grove novel: "Dragons are the blood of the world" or something... well this seems to mean Dragons are very important in Thedas...

It's called Dragon Age because it's set in the Dragon Age.

I think it's called Dragon Age simply because that's when it's set, in the Dragon Age of Thedas. Thedas seems to run a system where they give a certain period in history a name (our equivalent would be like the Victorian era, after Queen Victoria or the Bronze Age, after the first mass production of bronze weapons). Previous Thedas era's have been the Exalted Age, the Blessed Age etc.

This era is called the Dragon Age because they first began to notice a new influx of Dragons after they had been hunted to near extinction.

"Dragon" is the name given to the current Age of Thedas. If it were a few hundred years back, you'd have the Exalted Age, or the Towers Age. If I remember right from lore or something somewhere, the current age was named Dragon due to dragons appearing after believing they were extinct and that foretold a difficult age...? Someone else might remember that better than I do at the moment.

Dragons are a part of the world and the game, and may figure heavily sometime in future content, but for common knowledge right now the game wasn't named such because they are meant to be the current central plot.

It's not a difficult mystery to unravel. In the games' setting, each century is a "Age," and is named for some pivotal event at its outset. At the beginning of the current age, dragons returned to Thedas after a long absence, having been thought to have been hunted to extinction. The current century in the game setting was therefore declared as the Dragon Age. That's why documents you came across will carry dates like "9:12 Dragon."

Yes guys .. I KNEW that, about the Age being the "Dragon Age" because of the dragon seen by Maric and Loghain, and all the previous ages and so..

I was wondering if that is THE ONLY TRUE REASON...

Even the box arts of the games always feature Dragons, but I guess it isn't just because it takes place during the "Dragon Age".

Dragons have a purpose in the story, think of the Archdemons, the Calenhad dinasty, the Qunari...

Well, yeah. It's not the only reason why it's called Dragon Age. If Dragons were only relevant in the naming of the game, this series would not be doing so well. So yeah, you're going to see Dragons and things relating to Dragons and you might ride a Dragon but the only thing that matters, lore wise and until we know more anyway, is that the series is named for the period in which the game takes place.

Let's be honest, it's called "Dragon Age" because the name conveys the type of setting the game is. It's a brand name that screams "this is a fantasy setting, with magic, swords, and all the stuff you associate with the setting".

You are correct about the actual dragons so-far being mostly incidental, however.

The real answer is probably;

BioJoe: "I think dragons are cool."

BioSam: "Other people also like dragons."

BioJoe: "Now we need a title we can Copyright."

[many brainstorm and googling sessions later]

BioJoe: "Nobody owns Dragon Age!"

A title doesn't really need to be an explanation of the main gaming feature. I mean, if that were true, Mass Effect would be called "The Reapers Are Coming, Pick a Colour."

The Dragon Age span of 100 years was named by the Divine at the time because Dragons had been thought to be extinct the past few hundred years and suddenly were turning up again. That's pretty much all there was to naming this century. And Dragon Age sounds cool.

Late Middle Age Crisis except with Dragons, Ghouls and Crazy Mages instead of Mongol Hordes, Plagues and Climate Change didn't roll off the tongue very well either

The name is an in-world designation as well. It's not (necessarily) prophecy nor does it need to have a deeper meaning. It's an age of change, turmoil, destruction and the triumph of the powerful over adversity.  "Dragon" is a great word to indicate that.

(1) See the first 5-10 posts above.

(2) There be dragons here.

(3) You kill dragons.

(4) Dragons are the biggest beasts in the world.

(5) A special dragon features prominently in two storyline climactic moments [actually, make that three].

(6) Did I mention dragons yet?

Which raises the next obvious question; what happens when we reach the next age? Still have a few decades to play with but I wonder if they'll have a new name for another age.

Given that only 12 years has passed over 3 games, who's to say we'll ever get to that point?

Final Fantasy isn't the final fantasy, Dragon Age can remain the name no matter what the in story year or event is.

The name was also good for marketing. I wonder how well a game named "Blessed Age" or "Exalted Age" would have sold? Would anyone have paid attention to it?
