It's called that because it's set in the Dragon Age.

Also, the central characters of the universe are dragons or are connected to dragons - Old Gods, Wardens, Flemeth, hell even Mythal in the statues looks somewhat like a dragon.

As for where they came from, for now all we know is that they were always there, even before the Veil - therefore before the Fade.

Let's be honest, it's called "Dragon Age" because the name conveys the type of setting the game is. It's a brand name that screams "this is a fantasy setting, with magic, swords, and all the stuff you associate with the setting".

You are correct about the actual dragons so-far being mostly incidental, however.

Even though they have won me over by now, with the calendarium of Thedas and the fact that most of the lore hinges on the fact that "there once were powerful dragon who were gods" [sic], I have always thought the same thing.

Speaking of which, THEDAS is an acronym used during developement for THE Dragon Age Setting.

With all the love I have for the franchise, there's your M.O. of terminology.

I have to admit, I am somewhat curious about what the world was called before being renamed Thedas. Apparently they had some other generic-fantasy-style name that nobody really liked. The whole TheDAS thing always cracks me up, though. Partly because you'd never notice it unless someone pointed it out.

It's a scientifically established fact that Dragons make everything cooler.

Dragons have no impact on the plot?

A giant, corrupted dragon god is the main villain of the first game.

A dragon transforming god woman starts up the events of the second game.

The main villain has a pet dragon, that contains most of his power and is his most important asset in the third game.

Questions?

I'm thinking that the resurgence of dragons probably ties directly in to what has been slowly revealed the past two games.  We did go from a low number of dragons to suddenly 10 in such a short period.  Seems the population boom coincides with the rest of what is happening.
