Has anyone collected all the gears?
I am still missing two gears from the Ruins of Heidrun Thaig (I have all of the gears from Forgotten Caverns and Bastion of the Pure below). I found two "hard" two reach gears -- one underneath the Heidrun Thaig Monument, and another by jumping down from the Forgotten Caverns wooden bridge onto a broken bridge below. But I am still missing two.
If I remember correctly I also had two gears missing from this ruin.
I can't be bothered to look for them , though.
I have collected them all. Praise me!
But unfortunately I cannot remember where to get which ones. However, I believe you miss one in a hidden small cave where there is an abondoned little camp. You need to jump down and down from somewhere. I suggest jump down wherever you can.
I think I had all of them except 2 or 3 in each area, didn't care enough to look for the rest.
all I can remember is a lot of jumping down on tiny ledges and dieing a lot. I'm sure bio ware could have made them harder to find, but I don't know how, I found quite a lot in the lower levels and I opened all the doors but I still have the quest and don't care lol
Ugh, those gears. They're worse than shards. I wish there was some kind of occularum or something you could use to find them.
I'm missing 2 from Heidrun and 1 from Bastion of the Pure, but I'm also missing 2 doors (6 and 7, I think), so that's probably where the missing gears are.
Can you open all the doors without finding all the gears?
Yes, there's more than enough gears to open the doors, you will need to find the majority of them though, spamming L3 is the best way to find them
The two that gave me the most trouble, and probably the ones most people miss require you dropping down from the Darkspawn Warrens into Heidrun Thaig. I only figured it out because i noticed areas on the map that I hadn't been, went next to where they were on the map, looked up, and realized they were ledges.
One you have to drop A LOT from the area where you unlock the first expedition. Drop from the ledge where the fourth gate (the one with the emissary inside), and just follow your map. The second, you drop down from near the elevator between the warrens and the thaig.
Ugh I'm missing two gears as well in the ruins of heidrun thaig. I found all the ones in the Darkspawn warrens. I can't move on to the next area until I find them all! 
I've done a ridiculous amount of jumping, climbing and falling everywhere thinking it may be up on this ledge or down on that random stalagmite if I can just jump to it. I've been using some of the attacks to try and back flip to ledges. I'm sure they are actually easily accessible too. My thumb hurts from spamming the search button.
I kinda miss those damn shards, at least I could peer through a skull to point me in the right direction. Seriously, they need to do away with these ridiculous gears/shard quests. It's stupid. It's like an excuse to have us go around and explore and enjoy the wonderful scenery. It makes it hard to appreciate the work they've put into the design when you are cursing the map everywhere you go. 
Do you get anything if you collect them all, experience points of something?

I've been working on maps for these gears, I have the Warrens map done. Will be posting the other area maps in the next few days.
Two gears and two mugs prevented a completed run-through for me. Glad to know I did not suffer this alone.
And.... Heidrun Thaig gear locations.
Thanks for the Thaig map, I plunged to my death so many times trying to find the last 2, this narrows it down. Once I managed to land on a ledge that was just at the point where you die and I ended up in a neverending death/landing loop I had to force quit from. Thank goodness I only need to do this once to satisfy the completionist in me.

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but I found this because I was trying to find a map of the Ruins gear locations.
At least two of those gear locations you marked (the very bottom two) appear to actually be the location of some scorched gears. I'm not finding any bloodstained gears in that southern area before the main quest gear door, just scorched.
After doing more searching, one of the bottom is accessed via the southern operation, but the final one I was missing wasn't marked on your map. There are actually two to the right of the northern bridge (or the area directly below the lift to the Warrens on the map). One can be accessed on the same level as the bridge, but the other needs to be accessed via the Darkspawn Warrens operation.
