Currently I try to decide between these two characters. I don't care much about combat efficiency, more about the lore and party banter, especially regarding the two story DLCs because I haven't played them yet. My Inquisitor is an elven Reaver tank and usually take Varric and Solas along.

Which one would fit better, Cole or Dorian?

Cole's mind reading means he usually has special insight into other characters. Dorian's probably funnier, though.

Cole would seem a natural fit given that group.  As for the DLC side of things Cole will die quite often unless you are playing him.

It depends on what you want out of the experience. Dorian has lighthearted comments, usually a comical complaint about what ever area he is in and only adds a few extra lines of dialogue when talking with random NPC's/Quest givers through out the game. Cole on the other hand interjects plenty in to your random conversations, but most of his ambient comments are vague babble about the areas past.

I can't speak much to actual party banter since my game doesn't play it much, but from what I saw on line Cole gives you insights in to the characters back grounds that you wouldn't get other wise, and Dorian complains a lot and spars with Vivienne.

TLDR: Cole is better for lore Dorian is funnier.

Even as an archer?

Cole has some interesting stuff with Solas as I understand it.

Both Solas and Varric have interesting stuff with Cole depending on how you played out Cole's personal quest.

Cole being an archer certainly helps but to maximize his damage you will need to micro manage him - ie. make sure he uses hidden blades at every opportunity.

I always played Cole as DW and fully expected him to die  hehe.  I just wondered how many he would kill before I had to bring him back to life.  Having said that my Archer/assassin toon was one of the strongest I've ever played.  Beat out my KE by a large margin.

For Jaws of Hakkon, Cassandra and Dorian are must-haves. There are important revelations about the Chantry that Cassandra really needs to be there for, and also a lot of findings about Tevinter that Dorian gives good commentary about. Solas is give or take, he has some vague lines, but I didn't miss him playing post-game.

For Descent, I'd actually take both Cole and Dorian, and leave Varric and Solas home. Solas has nothing interesting to say, and all Varric does is complain about how much he wants to leave (he actually does this in Jaws of Hakkon too, so he's not good company for either DLC). Dorian, on the other hand, has a lot of light-hearted but also insightful commentary, and Cole has really interesting lines about... some very important things in this DLC. Cassandra again gives a lot of good commentary in this DLC, so she's a good option too.

Cole for lore. Dorian for combat.

Cole as a distance fighter should do okay in combat, but Sera is better at archery.

If you don't mind leaving Varric out of it, take Sera and the Warden bow (that fires three shots) instead.

But you will probably need to barrier juggle, so you should take Dorian. You will also need to dispel barriers.

My team (pre-end of game) is varric, dorian, solas. Hilarity ensues. Also, definately most well-rounded destruction team. My inq's a reaver.

For banter/dialogue, Cole is always interesting because of how much background information he draws out of your other companions, and his insights into situations during quests that come from his ability to see people's "hurt". It's also interesting/funny to see how others react to him; both his presence as a spirit, and his fixation on their vulnerabilities. At times he also foreshadows events and reveals important clues about mysteries in Dragon Age lore, though he doesn't seem to realize he's doing it. In general, I have preferred having Cole along, and especially with Solas and Varric.

Dorian is hysterical, and provides a lot of information about Tevinter. I didn't have him along much until JoH, but he had a fair amount to say, and I was pleased after giving him a spotlight there. His personal story is arguably the least crazy and the most relatable, which may appeal more to some and less to others. To me that made him a little boring despite his quick wit and awesome mustache. A lot of his banter has to do with defending himself from the stigma of being a Tevinter, and explaining that he knows his homeland is screwed up but loves his people anyway.

Cole actually has very important things to add in all of JoH, given it is a very Spirit-related plot.

I wouldn't know about the Descent sadly, cause I brought along neither.

Cole is better in every which way: Dorian is just a less funny Varric.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I decided to take Cole and Dorian along and kick Varric out of the team since he was a party member in my last playthrough (before JoH and Descent). And it seems Varric isn't all that interesting in the DLCs. Thanks again.

Like everyone say Cole overall is best just because he is spirit and can read minds, much insight on lore and other characters. Good you decided kick Varric he was best in DA:2 but in DA:I he was hit with returning companion stick and took some brooding from Fenris.
