The fact that some people want to see their female characters wearing protective gear in combat, rather than skirts and boob-window leather straps, has very little to do with any "SJW" thing. People complained about being forced into impractical gear and they gave us more "realistic" armor. Questioning why the males are covered from head to foot while females are running around dressed like bellydancers when wearing the exact same armor was a valid question, and one the devs seemed to agree was a bit odd since we now have the option to dress like we're going to war, and not a bar. I'm all for there being options for skimpy armor if people want it, since what their character wears does not affect me. I'm just glad that's no longer our only option, like it has been for so many games -- and that did affect me.

And if we're being fair, ugly armor is ugly on male OR female. Especially the stuff you find in Descent. It was hideous when my female character put it on, and I apologized to Cole when I swapped it on to him. It looked just as bad. Thankfully we can craft any sort of pretty armor and tint it colors we find pleasing. Maybe there are no options for boobs hanging out, but some of the armor looks quite feminine when crafted and tinted right.

Fancier clothes to choose from at Skyhold would be nice though. I'm not so bothered by the beige mess we do wear, but... yeah.

What i understand from Inquisition in terms of armour design is that its not designed to be sexy for any gender its aimed to be more practical for all. Instead of heavy plate that we got in DAO we now have armour that is quick to put on for those times when the Inquisitior is suddenly called away or attacked during the night while camping. Instead of clumsy, bulky and hard to carry armour we have armour that we can snap on in an instant and go charging off to battle in. Of course you also have your more complicated pieces like the Templar armour or the Dalish pieces.

But I do agree some of the armour is downright terrible in terms of design, the latest armour we got from the new DLC is rather ugly (sorry) but its practical I think? You pointed out the Qunari armour as a suitable armour for females, and it is for female mages living in a tropical climate where they won't freeze to death and have magic barriers and stuff. I adore the avvar armour to where you just slather your upper half in body paint because its both hilarious and stupid.

In terms of being feminine and still practical you could design heavy plate to be more decorative perhaps, something with more elegant curves and flourishes. It might be impractical but perhaps a robe / cape and feathers adoring the helmet, something that says graceful but still retains its strength.

129bd2cc18dd641053b415c909789fa8.jpg

Its much easier for rouges and mages who have more freedom in terms of design, rouges who traditionally wear leather bits of metal and cloth can still be able to show they have curves and muscles and mages have the most freedom I meant look at Vivienne her attire is the best designed of the companions I think followed by one of Dorians.

But remember when your fighting high dragons no one gives to tin nugs how beautiful or how elegant you are all that matters if you have enough protection to survive that dammed dragons attack. Unless you are a knight enchanter then you could strip down nude and still somehow take that thing down single handily.

But give it a few month someone will mod a "sexy" piece of armour or let you run around nude if you wish.

Yes this is a fictional game but like any RPG set in a world, it does have some basic concepts when it comes to background, design etc. Otherwise, why not just make it a hodge podge of everything? Chuck in spaceships with laser guns, winged unicorns that fart magic etc. Saying "oh it's fiction, whatever we want is okay cause who cares about the setting" is ridiculous. If I bought a lotro rpg and found it all the female elves in it wore bikini's and the male elves butch bearded men who drank ale and belched, I'd be wanting my money back.

This isn't a cobbled together world. It has a setting, lore, characters all detailed out in previous books, games and comics. To throw aside everything "just because we want it" no matter how much it clashes, it's more ridiculous. You want your characters scantily clad? Then go buy the 100's of other games out this that do provide it in abundance.

And all this SJW crap. I assume people who tout this as a reason why I don't want half naked, busty, chainmail bikini clad women running around in DA won't mind if I point out their difficulty in playing a game that doesn't have pixel characters that they can ****** over to boost their self esteem? What should we call them eh? BWB - Boys Want Boobies?

True story: Varric did In Your Heart Shall Burn in the qunari light armor. On Nightmare. (I'll add the pic when I get home, but I'm posting from work.) It was ridiculous.

I always try to keep the special gear until I get to Skyhold and can store it in the chest, but I don't want it taking up space in my inventory, so I equip it on characters I'm not using. I brought Cassandra, Sera, and Vivienne along for Champions of the Just, so I had the qunari light armor on Varric. Well, I always take Varric along for In Your Heart Shall Burn because he likes saving the villagers, and I forgot to change his armor. Keeping him alive was a challenge, but I didn't think too much of it. He's always a little on the squishy side, and I was playing on Nightmare, so I figured it was only to be expected. I was playing a warrior, so he was out of my field of vision the whole time, so I didn't notice my mistake until I took the screen shot where he congratulates the Inquisitor for burying the venatori. I realized my mistake at once, but I had *no* medium armor to put on him, so he had to finish the battle that way. Somehow, he survived! I'm just glad it was the venatori and not the red templars. Captain Denam would have crushed him.

Only armor I had a problem was the Defender Mail. I had to get out of that aluminum foil real quick. The lighter armor from the Spoils of the Qunari looked good on both genders (poor elves though). It seems impractical for battle but it was different. Pair it with the Ardent Blossom helm piece, and I found it attractive. Put it on the whole team, and I can see everyone breaking into a belly dance. Lol.

It's a videogame.  It's a power fantasy.  It's fiction.  No real human beings are objectified in any way.  Practical armor?  In this genre--really?  Armor is there to make your character look the way you want, not to realistically protect against anything.  What good is sitting inside a tin can going to do you against lightning, frost and spirit attacks?  "Realism" is the wrong word here entirely, and it's a poor argument for taking away player choice that might offend the SJW crowd.

So are you fine with flying unicorns farting magic rainbows, or is that where you draw the line?

You're correct that realism is the wrong word. I would say that "internal consistency" and "believability" are more appropriate. Dragon Age has established, from the very beginning, that armor is worn for protection. You remember all of those regular human/dwarven/elven opponents you have fought in the series? They wore it to protect themselves. Even darkspawn wear (rather poor) armor. The only peoples that seem not to wear much in the way of armor are the Avvar and the Qunari. The Avvar fight much like real world Celtic and Germanic barbarians, so I don't see much problem there. Meanwhile, the Qunari wear armor and clothing fitting their tropical environment, and the codex has stated that they wear heavy armor when they actually go to war.

Have you stopped to think that lots of people like their characters not looking ridiculous? Or having the armor miraculously morph shape when put on a wearer of a different gender? Still, I wouldn't necessarily oppose it if 1) said armors looked the same regardless of gender, and 2) there were alternatives that looked more like actual armor.

More clothing like the Qunari belly-dancing outfit? I can't actually see my mage running into battle in the cold and snow wearing that thing, and yes I have more then enough screenshots proving that I did have my lady mage wear it through 2 main quests (Mythal Temple and Cory-Kill) she looked so out of place hahaha. More protective armour is needed in different, less bulky, styles though! that's what I think DAI lacks, not revealing stuff just more styles, the Inquisitor is a front-line soldier after all.

She fought Samson wearing next to nothing. Bonus Morrigan, I like to call this screenshot "Judging each others outfits"

Spoiler

And lady Inquisitor is now kicking butt in a battlemage coat, which I personally think is appropriately classy, lady-like and battle practical:

Spoiler

The heck? Did they copy the 'dancer outfit' from SWTOR for that? I mean, I thought it was just the top, not the bottoms too.

@Ariella: Cate Blanchett rocks!

I'd add two more caveats:

1. Any given piece of equipment looks the same regardless of the wearer's gender: things can get ridiculous when a late-game set of heavy armor [...] magically morphs into a cleavage-miniskit-thigh-high-stockings outfit when worn by a woman

A million times yes. This is one of the main reasons why I couldn't stick to Guild Wars 2 -- almost every outfit is so heavily gendered, and many barely look like they're recognizably even same design on both genders. It really bites when you see a badarse armor with a really nice "theme" on a male character ... and then you realize that your own character instead gets some sexualized crap that pretty much loses that "theme" as well as any practical value. Again and again and again and again and again ...

I know right! my crusade has always been to put him in the most garish outfits I can craft.. So far, his "look at me, I'm awesomely handsome" attitude wins every time.

Yow, poor Dorian! Plaidweave makes my eyes want to BSoD. But I guess if anyone can pull it off, it's him. :P

My only problem with it it looked a little too light like it was casual armor gear.  Not something you would take out for combat.  Like some of the off duty wear you'd see on a member of the SGC.

Yes, I think it works best in Skyhold for that reason. But I'm still very happy with her armor designs. She looks really awesome in black with white accents, in particular.

It was hideous when my female character put it on, and I apologized to Cole when I swapped it on to him.

Aw, he'll forgive you. That's what he does, and "looking doesn't matter" ... as long as he has his hat.

Well I agree with all of that actually.

:)

While it's not exactly accurate I think the "looks like a man" complaint stems from the fact that both genders look the same in a lot of the armor, with the females generally looking like smaller character models of the males.

By the same token, though, one could say male characters "look like women" ... but we don't hear that, because the mindset is that the baseline/standard/default is male, not female or both or neither. Keeping that it mind might help.

I think the way the game handles companion armor is best way to tackle that. Things look different on different people.

I like that most armors, heavily themed ones like the Grey Warden gear aside, allow the companions to maintain a recognizable and unique look, yes. I never stick that heavily themed gear on them for that reason -- the only one exception that didn't look totally OOC to me was Blackwall in Warden armor. Ironic, in retrospect.

And practical armor.

And boobplate armor.

Anything, really. As long as it is done well.

I would have used my evil influence to get more female companions into the game and to make them give us a dwarf romance Because Of Reasons. Also a gay KISA for the gay KISA thread. And male Desire Demons wearing nothing but nipple chains and ridiculous codpieces. And a pony.

Sounds good.

*I'm happy my female characters get to wear clothes into battle, so by the definition of the thread I guess I must be an SJW.

I'm of the crazy opinion that both options for both genders would be great. What if I want my warrior to run in like a Scotsman?

Men and women look different. You can certainly have male looking women or female looking men. Both those exist in the real world. It isn't a 'male baseline/default' thing, even if most games do use males as a baseline (Mass Effect for instance, with Shepard sitting like a guy, or DAI where the inquisitor walks like a catwalk model when running about and walks like a burly guy in cutscenes.

I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures of male characters in JRPGs especially that look feminine.

I suspect when most people say 'looks like a...' they mean by standard real world norms, whether you approve of those norms or not. For instance the one female knight in GoT, I forget her name, looks mannish, and this is intentional for the character, where as other female warriors look more feminine. I barely watch that show so can't give better examples.

In Everquest 2, they portrayed children really weirdly, making them 2' tall models of the adult humans. This resulted in a little girl running around looking like a  barbie doll. In this case, in that game, the kid 'looked like a woman' which was not at all a good thing!

Designing female armor in a Bioware game may just be the most difficult job in the entire game-making process. I can just imagine the designers and their team lead drawing straws to see who gets the job.

People always say "There's a balance between looking fit for battle and looking sexy", but is there really a balance? If there is, nobody knows what it looks like. There's always something wrong.

Even in DAi all the armors cover up a woman's ass, or am I the only one noticing that? Every shirt/armor/robe - whatever, either has a trench coat thing going on or the upper portion is just one giant box-shaped armor that extends all the way to your female character's thighs

There was a blog post a while back that cited Mass Effect's armor as a fairly balanced representation of "proper" while still defining feminine attributes. They even had a real armor smith comment, who said he had plenty of women insist on wearing breastplates that shape around their beasts despite that being horribly unsafe from a practicability perspective. They still wanted the fantasy.

Yeah if you put beasts inside your armour, they might scratch. ^_^

Seriously though, real world armourers (or their customers) don't have to worry about practicality any more than game designers do. Noone is actually going to use them as protection. It's a look.

I did like Mass Effects armour, well, Shepards. They went and sexified up all (most of) the female follower NPCs. Then they did that in DA2. And then they went the opposite direction in DAI and made armour ugly for both genders.

Personally as a straight (grumpy old) man I do not like attempts to pander to me, which was basically what characters like Miranda and Isabela were for.

The type I like best are the ones that look like they'd protect you in battle but also have a girly flair. In DAI my favourite for the pc is the Dalish light armour because the metal whateveritis bodysuit covers everything so the rest of it can add to protection but it's mostly ornamental.

The armors which are 'sexy' and 'revealing' for women should be 'sexy' and 'revealing' on the men as well.

Damn right. I want my protagonists to be sexy boys too

I like the armors available.  Not perfect mind you, but they are practical.  I think that was what they were going for.  Conan style armor may look cool in the movies, but realistically, you're dead.  Especially with Dragon Age's habit of having archers EVERYWHERE...or their equivalent.

As to Mass Effect, they had kinetic shields and biotic barriers.  The armor was only to catch what got past that, and even that armor was pretty practical in application.  Not perfect again, but better than some.  Sorry, but Final Fantasy and friends probably would have left most of their heroes...men and women...in bloody pools in seconds.  A barmaid in a tee and mini stands little chance against bullets.  Still trying to figure how Cloud survived a gunshot to the FACE without looking like Zaeed. :P

At the end of it, its just fun.  I still think that the Antaam-saar should be a casual outfit for the Qunari in Skyhold.  You know, except for the cold drafty castle.  Seriously, why are they not wearing furs all the time? :P

The only decent looking armor is the new qunarie armor.  The new armor from the deep roads,, I'm sure looks great on a male, But I feel like I'm wearing my dads 50 year old qunarie armor and I'm a elf female. Come on bio ware ,, cater to your female plays who want to look FEMALE.

Oh please, help me. How does one look female?
