The power of Dragon's Keep does great wonders.

A couple of my friends are planning on playing DA:I which is really cool, we can multiplayter together and just have so much fun. It's just they don't wanna play the past games...which is fine and all. (It's just weird jumping to the 3rd game.) Their gonna use Dragon's Keep to make their choices...which got me wondering?

How many actually played the past games? The only thing I'm missing is playing the DLC for Dragon Age 2 (I will go back to it at some point.) I know many people who do this...refusing to play the past games and moving onto the latest installment of the series, my friends also did this with Mass Effect 3.

Going by the icons under the profile pics, I think the majority here played all three. I have. Multiple times.

I'm sad. I own both Origins and DA 2 for PC and Xbox 360... Only reason I don't have PC DAI is my laptop would have a apoplexy.

I like having the flexibility of where I play darn it.

I completed DAO nine times and DA2 eight times.

I never understood the thought process that leads to the decision to start a series anywhere but at the start.

I lost count how many times I've played. I think I had like 15 Wardens and I can't remember how many Hawkes before I started deleting in the Keep.

So I'm right there with you.

I finished both past games multiple times. Well, same goes for DAI.

To tell the truth I would feel strange playing DAI as the first game. I would miss many references from DAO and DA2.

I started the Dragon Age franchise with Inquisition... But since, I played Origins and DA II with all the DLC.

It is possible to play Inquisition and understand the whole story without having played the previous games, but it is more interesting to start from the beginning to get all the references. In fact, I consider having another playthrough in Inquisition just to see how my new worldstate will influence the game.

All games lots of times. Started with DAO, and did DA2 before DAI.

I played them all multiple times with multiple characters/personalities/classes, as well as all the DLC.  And when my Xbox 360 stopped reading discs, I bought the first two games again for my PS3.  I have DAI for my PS4 though.  :)

I've played them all multiple times (on my other halfs account though). It just adds so much to it. When Morrigan appears, or references to past events. Hearing them talk about some of the things the Warden or Hawke did, it's a little like hearing people praise you at work when they don't know you're just behind the door. It just makes your heart swell with pride when things from the last games are talked about.

Inquisition loses half it's charm when you have no clue about what happened in Origins and 2.

For example, the first time I set foot in Redcliffe village, I of course walked past the Blight monument. Yes. The Hero of Ferelden Monument. Because the import was that my Warden saved the village. I have suddenly felt so proud of Kallian... As in "You did this, you magnificent elven lass. You rock!" even though it was actually me.

So, yes. Having played the previous adds countless details Inquisition can not have just on it's own.

I feel like people would be doing themselves a disservice if they don't play the previous games, especially Origins which is considered the best in the series even now. I've played every game multiple times as I really want to feel like I really shaped the world instead of just pick options in the Keep.

I fall somewhere in between. I came late to the series (May 2013,) played 11 wardens through to the end of DAO over the course of a year and a half, plus half a dozen who didn't make it that far. But for various reasons, including knowing that DAI was due out in a few months when I finally started getting tired of DAO almost a year later, I haven't actually played DA2. I did watch several videos of the story portions so I'd have a decent idea of the events (not the same as playing it multiple times with different choices, of course, but I probably know the story better than some of the people who speeded their way to the end once like it was a race and never played again.) For the most part, there have only been a few points in DAI that I felt I needed a better understanding of DA2 to really understand. And a few DA2 fans have made a good enough case to overcome some of my personal concerns with DA2 that I may go back and play it after I start getting bored with DAI.

I'm at my 2nd Warden in DAO, I haven't played Leliana's Song yet and haven't finished Golems of Amgarrak, but I will do that eventually. (I want to get all Achievements o^o)

Just got the Exiled Prince DLC, so I'll recruit Sebastian with my 2nd Hawke. (I did play Legacy & Mark of the Assassin)

I have all DAI DLCs and I'm now in the Deep Roads of The Descent.

Summary:

DAO: 1 1/2 PTs (did Awakening & Witch Hunt in my first PT)

DA2: 1 PT (did the DLCs)

DAI: 2 PTs (made a Keep import mistake and had to play with the Default WS the first time I played it)

I started with Inquisition, but unlike your friends I'm more than willing to play the past games.

I'm finishing DAO for the first time and then I'll purchase DA2.

Editing the Keep without playing the games first? That's no fun at all.

Much as I loved the previous games, one of my best friends jumped on board with DAI and still had a great time. (She did try DAO back when it first came out but hated the combat.) Then again, I've got another best friend who didn't finish Origins OR Inquisition because he got bored but liked DA2. Go figure.

I've played both DAO and DA2 multiple times.  If I wasn't going to play both games prior I don't know that I'd bother with the Keep personally.  I like the keep because I can (kind of) import my characters.  I find making up characters I didn't actually play to be a bit tedious.
