I've played DAO with most of the DLC (I never picked up Leliana's song, Darkspawn Chronicles or the Golems one because I didn't see the point) more times than I care to count, and I've played DA2 with all the DLC slightly less times than that.

And read most of the books/comics   I went in to DAI over prepared.

But my sister played some of DAI, not sure how far she got with it in the end, and she had only played a small amount of the first and none of the second.

A few people at another forum I frequent also picked up DAI as their first in the series because there wasn't a lot else going on for the PS4 at the time.

I don't think any of them used the Keep though. I doubt they even knew about it. I think they just went in using the default world state.

I didn't get into Dragon Age until Inquisition came out. Then after my first DAI PT, I had to buy DAO and DA2 because I was so intrigued by the world.

I've now racked up multiple PTs on each game in the series and have purchased them on both console (multiple systems too) and PC (even though I can't play on PC at the moment).

Now for ME? Goodness no. No way I could have just started at ME3 and been ok with that. I had to start from the beginning with that one. I would have been extremely lost if I hadn't.

Played both previous Dragon Age games several times. Exact number for Origins is tricky because I started way more games than I finished. What can I say, I like the origins part of Origins :P ... In fact, from the beginning to arrival in Lothering is probably my favorite part of the game. Uhh, anyway... yeah I played them all.

I never understood the thought process that leads to the decision to start a series anywhere but at the start.

I think the only series where I started with a third game was Silent Hill 3, but then I went back and played and then continued forward. It was an odd decision, especially since Silent Hill 3 is the only direct sequel in the series, but somehow it worked and got me hooked on the entire thing. A friend at the time bought it. I was the one who played and got way into it.

That said, I wouldn't start a big, lore-heavy RPG series other than at the start.

I think it really depends on  if a series in on the same system or if it is split up.  I played Chrono Cross, but never Chrono Trigger.  I didn't have the system that Chrono Trigger was on.  But I did have a PS1 to play Chrono Cross.  I had no idea Chrono Cross was a sequel until months later.  So I can see if someone didn't have an old gen console and if their PC was not speced out to play the game, just playing DAI on the PS4/XBone.

I played all the games (and associated DLC) multiple times.

Same! (except I never bothered with darkspawn chronicles, or whatever it was called).

I played DAO (with all the DLCs and expansion), but only read plot summaries and watched Youtube videos for DA2.

I've played all the things, multiple times.  Started with Origins.

My sister wanted to play DA:I, but she never got into the past games.  (She had a Dalish Warden abandoned in the Tower of Ishal because she ran out of inventory space...  yup. :P  )  She made a new world state for herself on the Keep.  Surprised me, because I thought she would simply use the default.  Maybe that Dalish Warden miraculously escaped the tower after all.

So have I and now I import my decisions onto the keep as I play as well to try to keep it somewhat seemless. The onjly one I've not played as yet is the new Descent one. I have it but I'm saving it for my next playthrough. Which I plan on starting soon.

Yes, I played the past games. I got into it for the dual-blade features of Dragon Age 2, but started with Origins.

I've played both games and all dlc a number of times before DAI was released. I also have played both games once since DAI released

I lost count how many times I've played. I think I had like 15 Wardens and I can't remember how many Hawkes before I started deleting in the Keep.

So I'm right there with you.

yeah I suspect I'll end up like that eventually too as I'm like that already with the ME series. With DA though I've only recently managed to figure out how the mechanics of this game series works after acquiring the strategy guides mostly for DAO because once I figured that out the rest fell into place on the other games. The only times I need helpwith Inqwuisition is on the Astrarium and Temple of Mythal puzzles but again I do have the book to help me with that. I've done 3 complete playthroughs of the series so far and wil be starting a 4th soon I'm hoping so will see where that one takes me then.

I have played Dragon Age: Origins several times, though I never actually managed to complete it. I've not had the pleasure of Dragon Age II.

I played Dragon Age because a friend recommended it to me. I liked Origins, but disliked DA2 so much that I struggled for MONTHS and was about to drop it.

Inquisition came out and I hadn't finished DA2. I heard good things about it and I was tempted to skip what was left of DA2 in order to move on to Inquisition, but I made an effort and finished DA2, by skipping every side quest except for most of the companion ones (though I did skip some of those too...). My friend also insisted that I played Legacy, so I did XD

After Inquisition, I understood how important it was to have played DA2. I actually went back and played DA2 again (with cheats because I didn't want to fight anyone, just wanted to see the story from a new perspective and do the things I had skipped), and I also played Mark of the Assassin. I liked it better the second time around (without combat, understanding the context better, etc).

I've played all the past games and dlc- except for Awakenings (I have it and I played the beginning bit but that's it?? I'll need to go back and play it sometime- cause I'm kinda curious about the architect)

I played the series backwards. It was interesting to go back in time step by step. I don't know if I would have preferred it the other way, but backwards opened up different angles of looking at the story that I don't think I would've seen if I'd done them all in a row.

I never understood the thought process that leads to the decision to start a series anywhere but at the start.

My husband is like that. Everyone has their quirks, and one of his is that he must start at the beginning. Always. And then he must play until the very end in the most linear and literal way imaginable because that's what he does.

Thus, he never plays Dragon Age. DAO is too long a game for him and far too lore heavy for his tastes. I keep trying to tell him that he should skip Origins and head straight for 2, but he wouldn't dream of it.**

Oh well, more for me.

**I don't think that DAO is too long or too lore heavy, and I enjoy Origins, but everyone is different. It's just sad because I think my husband would really enjoy 2, but he can't play it because he never finished DAO. Quirks!

I played all the games and dlc apart from the mobile ones. That is the only true way to enjoy the rpg's like dragon age.

I played DAO multiple times (something like nine characters), doing all the origin stories and finishing all the DLC with a few of those characters. I played DA2 completely twice and started a third game. However, there are other series I started in the middle, such as Fallout, because a friend recommended New Vegas. So I played that and then played Fallout 3. I started TES with Morrowind and played through that and Oblivion before Skyrim. I did load Daggerfall but couldn't deal with the graphics, sad to say. I played Witcher 1 and skipped Witcher 2. I'm trying to decide whether I really must play W2 before W3. (I'm sure my friends will insist on it and try to embarrass me if I don't!).

Anyway, I'm flexible. Still, I love DAO so much that I can't imagine just playing DAI and not the others, especially if you play as a mage.
