I enjoy making different characters.  Why play as yourself, and why play the same character over and over again...unless it is actually the same character.  I tended to play the same two Shepard's over and over and over again.

As for Dragon Age Inquisition specifically?  So far I have rolled a diplomatic pro chantry Knight Enchanter Mage who has plenty of snark.  And a nobility hating female rogue with a bow who also really does not like the chantry too much.

I very much chose to play as different characters. I look forward to roleplaying and interacting through the varying viewpoints of different races, genders, classes, orientations, faiths, etc. This doesn't preclude me from having strong preferences, and engaging in some repetition due to favoritism. I tried out far less combinations when it came to Inquisition though. I have come to want to define my own personal canon as soon as possible, and simply refine, then repeat the story through that specific protagonist. So, I don't even retain any alternates anymore.

My canon goes: F!Dwarf Noble Archer Ranger (diplomatic rogue) -> M!Hawke DW/Archer Shadow (obscured, flask & elemental specialist; aggressive rogue) -> M!Dwarf Shield Templar (witty warrior)

Two strikes against the Dalish so far. I would have had one for my warden, but Dragon Age 2 dialogue from your clan doesn't make sense unless you were the Ultimate Sacrifice, or perhaps followed Morrigan through the Eluvian ("what do you mean you never saw him/her again! Ashalle asked, and the Warden agreed, to visit after defeating the Archdemon...it was in the dialogue!"). Then, Inquisition made it painfully aware to me that Dalish were definitely not integrated into the dialogue at the onset. I felt like a human wearing an elf costume. At this point, I don't expect to play a Dalish until possibly the last entry in the series, which is too bad because I find their culture and viewpoint fascinating. But I want to have a couple of protagonists from the race that is exclusive to the series first. Elves are readily available in other places, but where else can I roleplay a Qunari?

I try to make different characters, but I have some preferences. Like I almost never play warriors, although my canon warden is a dalish warrior (dual-wielding). Most of my characters are also elves for some reason, i guess I just like their lore in DA (both dalish and city). I like to play an underdog, especially when you are supposed to be a big hero.

What I really could never play is this typical character, which is, like, the most expected.. I don't know how to explain this better. Like I could only play a female Shepard (not a male soldier), my first Skyrim character was a bosmer archer (not a nord male warrior), Cousland warden, human male warrior Inquisitor and so on... So someone you would least expect to be a hero in a given setting? In DA these are usually elves and mages.

So, to sum up - my characters are pretty similar in terms of race and class, but they have very different personalities (though it is harder to roleplay different personalities in DAI, sadly).

I've got three world states running for the series right now and they all have different PCs.

Canon:

Warden Aeducan - male dwarf; sword/shield warrior; dutiful, yet vengeful against those who wrong him; romanced Zevran

Garrett Hawke - male human; support spec mage; sarcastic, selfish, overly emotional mage loyalist; romanced Anders

Inquisitor Adaar - male qunari; two handed warrior; overly 'good' (almost stereotypically white-knight type); romanced Dorian

Alt World State 1:

Warden Brosca - female dwarf; ranged rogue; selfish, ruthless, cruel at times; romanced Leliana

Gavin Hawke - male human; sword/shield warrior; vehemently pro circle and anti blood magic; romanced Fenris

Inquisitor Cadash - male dwarf; dual wield rogue; charming, dashing, Robin Hood-esque scoundrel; romance Iron Bull

Alt World State 2:

Warden Aeducan - female dwarf; sword/shield warrior; knight in shining armor type; selfless; romanced Alistair

Marion Hawke - female human; ranged rogue; aggressive and sarcastic (kind of a tough gang gal); romanced Isabela

Inquisitor Cadash - female dwarf; ranged rogue; pro-circle; 'makes tough decisions for the greater good' type; romanced Blackwall

All different (as much as possible since there are really not that many choices on how to play) and all leading a different set of world state choices.  It's why I'm not a huge fan of DA2.  I felt that there was just less that I could do with Hawke than the others.  In fact, I never even finished my Marion Hawke play through.  I got her to the end of Chapter 1 and got bored with it.  Just ended up choosing a different set of choices in the Keep.

There are a couple of constants, though.  I never play elves (yawn).  I rarely play mages.  And all of my canon PCs are gay males.  Outside of that, it's kind of open.  I've yet to have a straight male PC, but I'll probably give that a whirl at some point.  Although, if Cassandra (who I adore) wasn't enough to tempt me, maybe I won't.

Thinking forward, I'll probably do something like this for DA4 (if these choices are allowed):

Canon - male dwarf ranged rogue; 'tough', 'aggressive', and 'forceful'

Alt 1 - male qunari mage; 'good', 'scholarly', 'erudite'

Alt 2 - female dwarf sword/shield warrior, 'good', 'sarcastic', 'Mary Sue' type

Hmm, my "canon" characters all come out so similar you'd think they were sisters, actually (to be fair, two of them really are cousins!). Female human mage, basically polite and idealistic personality but with a tendency towards being snarky when annoyed. And always romances a Grey Warden, for some reason. (which never seems to work out too well for them...)

Second playthroughs are a little more diverse. In all three cases, they are male warriors, but the Warden and Quizzy were elves and Hawke was, obviously, human, as well as being a two-handed fighter whereas the other two were sword-and-shield. Furthermore, the Warden was gruff and cynical but also steadfast and reliable, the Inquisitor was sanguine and easy-going, and Hawke was a massive smartass and really a bit of a bastard at times.

On the whole, I think my second-playthrough characters tend to be more interesting, because they're the ones that develop a personality that's more distinct from my own. But I still like my heroic mage women best. :)

I play human characters mostly, but in both DA2 and DAI I coudlnt play my favourite type, that is warrior/rogue with two swords but also played a mage but never an archer. So I made a new playthrough with a female, elven archer. Basically the opposite of everything I have played so far.

Well they all look the same loool. Black hair, light skin, brown eyes hahahaha. so physically yes. I think since the characters have such different backgrounds they cant be seen as the same anyway. I only wish we got to know more about the inquisitor's background ..speaking as a human noble.

Ouch. After going on about that, I came down with "Dalish Fever." I still can't push myself to play one in Inquisition (no matter how hard I try), but I changed my canon Inquisitor to a Qunari, so I can have a go at the Dalish in the next game. I guess, in this way, I am now making really sure that that my characters are different.

I suppose all of my first runs do count as alternates, so I should probably take back that comment as well.

I seldom play "evil" "criminal" or "callous" characters, but I do rp different personalities. I usually play women, although my canon DA:O Warden is actually male. I thought I share my favorite women.

DA:O Human Female- Hannah - Rogue - Daddy's little girl, always does the right thing, even when it hurts. Terribly traumatized by what happened to her parents, Finds Wynn's advice and company oddly comforting.  Loves Alistair for the man he's becoming, and takes great satisfaction in Killing Rendon with her family sword.

DA:II Miri Hawke - Mage. A take charge, likes-to-control-everything woman, who doesn't take any s**t off her brother, but loves him deeply. Strongly pro-mage but hates blood magic. Has an immediate crush on Anders but finds herself falling for the crazy elf with whom she fights constantly. Supports Anders right up to the time he blows up the Chantry, executes him but sides with the mages at the big battle.

Da:I Human Female - Warrior or Mage, pro-Chantry, Andrastrian who chooses to keep the Templars, and romances Cullen for the good and decent survivor who has grown and matured in spirit into a wonderful man. Becomes Cassandra's best friend and promotes her as Divine. Memorable only in the fact that's she's pretty ordinary, and emotionally healthy, loves her family and likes people, all kinds of people.

DA:I Dalish Female - Maharet Warrior or Mage. Surprisingly xenophilous for a Dalish Elf, she was thrilled to be sent into the world of humans to find out what all the fuss was about.  Is immediately attracted to Solas and his adventures into the fade and unusual take on "demons."  Wants to choose the mages, but after Redcliffe and the shennanigans there, she simply doesn't see the mages as being much help in the battle so goes with the Templars.  Loved meeting the Avaar and learning more about their customs. Romances Solas and cannot find it in her heart to hate him. Has an optimistic outlook on life despite the odds.

I try and keep them diverse, and make sure each play through has differing protags in the keep.

Noble Dwarf + Rogue Hawke + Mage Inquisitior etc

When I started DAO roleplaying wasn't something I was familliar with...so I just created a female human mage and roll with it.

In DA2 again I went with the female human mage , and snark my way into the game.

I didn't like playing male for example back then but I really wanted to try the Morrigan romance.

So I made a city elf , and liked it ,although I wasn't roleplaying much.As in creating a character with his own point of view etc..

Then I made a male rogue Hawke and started to roleplay more.I really had some fun because well he was kind of a manw**** and glued to the Blooming Rose.

I still have fond memories of Serendipity going "Jeez Everybody knows Honeybadger." in MOTA.

Going into DAI I thought I was going to go down my familliar route.Create a female human mage ...and maybe roleplay some more complicated character in a next playthrough.

But I didn't.

I wasn't fond of the british female voice , I really like Dorian , and I felt like lore wise it could be more interesting to play an elf...and also I don't like playing elven female.(yeah I'm nitpicky.)

So I played a Dalish hunter , and now I can't play anything else.

I've tried ...but I can't .Inquisition is the story of this Dalish dude in my mind.

Yeah definitely.

My Canon below.

Zarahel Tabris, Elf - Male, Rogue - Used his cunning and intelligence to avoid confrontations whenever possible. This inspired by the death of his mother, who adopted a more aggressive approach against humans, Zarahel looked for an alternative path. Always willing to help others irrespective of the race or gender and only willing to kill as a last resort. Best friends with Alistair and lover of Leliana. Zarahel gave his life to end the blight knowing that Alistair and Leliana would protect the world he so dearly loves in his absence. Was unwilling to trust Morrigan due to his sadistic ideals and lust for power.

Spoiler

Aldrum Kader, Dwarf - Male, Warrior - A Grey Warden veteran for almost a decade and an exceptional killer with his trademark duel-wielding daggers after teaching himself, Aldrum was promoted to Warden-Commander of Ferelden to re-establish the Grey Wardens. Aldrum's personal life was ruined after a unexpected raid attack and killed his husband and adopted children while attempting to live a civil life in Orlais. Now, Aldrum holds only hatred for all Darkspawn and believes that all darkspawn should be eliminated no matter the cost. Aldrum defended Warden's Keep while burning and destroying Amaranthine to ensure that every single Darkspawn was killed. Subsequently, Aldrum received great criticism and abuse from Ferelden's populace and this compelled him to leave. His current where abouts are unknown but rumour has it he seeks to find a cure to the Calling that could soon claim his own life as many other Wardens.

Kai Hawke - Male, Mage - Trained by his father Malcolm Hawke. Kai resents living his life constantly in hiding and on the run due to his magical prowess. Kai believed it should be considered a gift and not a curse. Willing to help all but the Templars and the Chantry. Two institutions which Kai strongly opposes due to their harsh treatment of mages. Best friends with Anders and took Merrill as an apprentice who later also became his lover. Sided with the mages and allowed Anders to live but forced him to leave the party for not being honest about what he intended in the Chantry. Currently, seeks to eliminate The Elder One and despite Merrill's plea to join, Hawke told her that she was not ready for the trials ahead and currently travels alone.

DAI - Undecided. Either a female pro-freedom mage Qunari that loves a Qun following Iron Bull as a guilty pleasure or a male pro-security Batman-ish Dwarf that occasionally flirts with Scout Harding but isn't willing hold down a full relationship and absolutely hates Solas.
