This question randomly occurred to me today and I can't believe I haven't wondered this before. Perhaps it has already been answered elsewhere or I'm missing some key point from the games...

So we know that five of the seven Old Gods have been found and turned into archdemons. And we know WHICH of the Old Gods have been corrupted, but HOW do we know which of them have been turned into archdemons? If the Old Gods all went silent, leading to the breach of the Golden City, it's not like the magisters would have known the first archdemon was Dumat. I don't think they had ever previously seen the Old Gods in the flesh, only through whispers in their dreams.

Plus, I would think most blighted dragons look similar.

Spoiler
so it doesn't seem easy to distinguish between them. Do the Wardens in the Anderfels have some way of determining which Old God causes each Blight? And wouldn't that mean that they have information about the nature of the original Old Gods that could prove or disprove their divinity?

It just seems like there shouldn't be any method of determining which Old God equates which archdemon. It should really just be "five of the seven Gods have been corrupted, but we don't know which ones are left."

I believe the explanation is that Grey Warden can hear enough whispers from the Old God soul to piece together who is leading the horde.

The senior GW identifies the old gods prior to their mutation, they know where they are, when one of them  become an AD they know which old god was.

I think the Grey Wardens knows where they are burried but I don't think it's clear if they know because it was some old knowledge or simply because at one point they can hear the archdemon's song .

About knowing the name of the dragons , there's never been any explanation , they have no name tag , and yeah they all look the same .

The only weird thing I can think of is ...their old priests , the 7 corrupted magisters are drawn to their ex Gods.

The wardens used Dumat's carcass to bait Corypheus .(Cory was priest of Dumat)

And the Architect awoke Urthemiel , he used to be priest of Urthemiel.

Still doesn't explain it , because those two were caught after Dumat and Urthemiel had ravaged the surface.

OK thanks for the responses. I guess it makes sense that senior Wardens have some way of identifying the dragons when they rise. This type of information, and the location of the final two Old Gods, would be interesting to see in a Weisshaupt DLC along with the Warden civil war and Fade survivor.

I assume there must be something identifiable about the individual Old Gods. The Codex on the Archdemon in DAO doesn't seem to have an author, but given that it tells us that it was Urthemiel, I figured he must have been in some way recognizable to the people of Ferelden.

In in the fade quest with the Nightmare, there was a memory from the First Blight where a Tevinter sees Dumat and very quickly recognizes him and can tell the difference between him and a regular dragon. He was also initially under the mistaken impression he was there to save the Imperium from the darkspawn menace, but then he noticed that his skin was molted and corrupted before he attacked. So presumably even twisted into an Archdemon, there must be something recognizable about the image of the Old Gods underneath it all.

I think what was said was that scholars spend time determining which Old God rose. Somehow.

This codex suggests the Archdemons are (or at least were) recognizable by their worshippers even in blighted form.  I would assume the visual cue probably has something to do with the shape and number of horns, given that's been a fairly consistent link in various representations of Mythal.
