I gotta say, without overdoing it, I think Solas' romance might just be the best in this game. I'm currently playing through the third time, playing as a female dalish elf and Solas' romance has exactly what I think romances in these games need - a place within the story at hand. I think all the romances did do this to some extent, although I'd probably sort out Sera, Blackwall and Bull's (can't comment on Dorian's yet) or Josephine's in this bunch to be honest.

My original romance was Cassandra in both my playthroughs as a male and I was always slightly disappointed at her actual romance, because it felt like the typical Bioware Dating Sim formula where it's super cliche all of a sudden and didn't play to the strengths of her character or her character arc for that matter. The thing was, her character arc was good, but her romance felt just kinda like fluff.

So I guess I was maybe judging DA:I pretty hard on the romance part because to me it felt like it was just another game where the romances were features and player pandering... and they sort of are, but I gotta say, I find Solas' to be a genuinely nice part to have as part of the story.

So, just a little shoutout to his romance, and thumbs up for Patrick Weekes who wrote it. It was really well done.

As much as I hate to admit it, he's my fave too.  I find it hard to not romance him with every elf I make, even though I know what's coming...

So kudos to you Mr. Weekes, and please keep collecting those tears. ;)

I think Dorian's makes good sense if you do In Hushed Whispers, since it sets the relationship off on a kind of immediate bond between him and the Inquisitor. Not sure how well it'd work if you did Champions of the Just, though. I admit, though, that after that it's somewhat typical-BioWare. I really like Dorian, though, so I can forgive it.

Solas is definitely the best in terms of story integration, though. Also an elven Inquisitor just works nicely given the reveals about elven history and the backstory with Ameridan. If 'Human Noble' works best with Origins (due to the stuff with Howe, etc, investment in main story arc, etc.), then Dalish Inquisitor definitely fits Inquisition best.

Cullen is still my fav since there isn't so much unnecessary drama mixed in with it: No forced sex to make demon babies, no possessed terrorists, no broody pity me parties, no liars who hit and quit...

It's nice to have a simple romance with a "worried well" type.

Still, I understand why other people think it is the best since his romance is deeply woven into the story.

Same reason why Garrus is still my favorite BioWare romance.

But I do really enjoy the romance arcs that are woven into the main narrative (Alistair, Morrigan, Liara, etc.)  For being added at the last minute, Solas's was very well integrated.

I agree, OP. =)

As much as I love BioWare Romances, TV Tropes describes them as a "Romantic Sidequest," and a lot of them feel like just that--romantic sidequests. Like, pursuing a romance is a nice extra feature the game offers, but it doesn't affect how you experience the central plot or the game, and if you choose not to do it it doesn't affect a thing.

I romanced Solas first, and was so overwhelmed by how good his romance was that I couldn't even think of romancing anyone else for a long time. When I finally did, they all felt rather disappointing by comparison.

I was so used to BioWare romances feeling like just a nice added sidequest rather than enhancing of the main story that I didn't expect Solas' romance to feel so... meaningful. You get to see a different side to him (since he's so closed off), you get to see a different side to his character arc, and since he's a central character whose arc is tied to the main story, romancing him enhances the experience of the main story.

With the others, I've gone back and romanced Cullen, Dorian, Iron Bull, and Josephine. While I love Cullen almost as much, pursuing him and the others really feel like just a nice side quest that doesn't affect the main story one bit, and I didn't experience the main story any differently with them as without them.

It's not bad, it's just... different.

Cassandra's is disappointing? That was the romance I planned to do next.

No, it's sweet but the romance arc stood out to me as weaker than her character arc, because it didn't really add anything to the story or the lore.

Ugh... I'm doing a male character next, and I'm playing for them to be straight. Who else do I have besides Josie if Cassandra is out?... That's my only other option, never mind. Is hers good?

I love Josie. Romanced her as a female Trevelyan warrior, and hers ended up being my second favorite romance after Solas. She is sweet, funny, and graceful, and you end up being her knight in shining armor.

That good huh? I kinda figured the "no sex scene" thing meant that the romance must have been half assed and empty, and like an asexual relationship where there's just affection in a snuggling sort of way but nothing serious. I kinda just ruled it out right from the start and figured Cassandra would be the only straight romance worth doing for a male.

Well, I personally prefer romances without sex scenes. Leaves something to the imagination, and animated sex scenes are not that sexy anyway, at least not to me.

There's definitely deeper emotion than simply snuggling in the Josie romance, and there's some drama, but overall it's light, sweet, and funny. I found Josie attractive specifically for that reason, she's so innocent, and at the same time mature. She doesn't get childish the way Merrill did in DA2. You def get the feeling the romanced Inquisitor is very special to Josephine. But if you're looking for angst, or tears, or a deep, very dramatic conflict, that's not it.

Edit: Forgot to mention... Don't let the alck of sex scene make you think it was 'rushed'. There's a lot of well-developed content, especially compared to Solas where for most of the game the only way I knew Lavellan's in a relationship with him is because everyone else would turn her down.

Solas's romance is the best for story integration and romantic tension.

Cullen's is best if you just want a a guy with the "normal" amount of baggage (for Bioware that is). I would have liked the romance better if we weren't dealing with drug addiction recovery and perhaps were dealing with the Inquisitor's own demons (fear of intimacy, shyness, something, anything), someone mentioned a long time ago that the PC always seems to be "fixing" the love interests in the Bioware tales.

And I liked Dorian's romance as well. Of all of them, his seemed the most healthy in terms of intimacy, companionship, love, etc.

Cassandra's was sweet but a little too predictable - the tomboy with the soft, feminine interior.

Josephine's was a Disney romance - a nice dessert but too sweet for a meal.

Never did Blackwall's or Sera's because neither character appealed to me as an LI.

I wish we'd had a romance for Scout Harding, a good, healthy, up front and no iggy romance for the Dwarf lady. I would have liked that.

Relationships don't have to have sex to be meaningful.  <_<

And speaking as an asexual in a very loving romantic relationship, I take deep offense to that.

You're right, the relationship between siblings or children with their parents is meaningful... But that's not a romance. And that's the kind of relationships that have no sex. To me, a relationship that lacks sex is a platonic one and NOT a romantic one.
