Actually, all Bioware really need to do is allow us to switch out abilities while pausing during combat. They can keep the 8 skill slots lock for aesthetic purposes and to keep the UI looking clean but just allow us to switch abilities during combat from the menu and disable that function for multiplayer. That's it. They can't even be bothered to do that.

This is something I'm wondering if we can at least fix with mods on the PC. I want to be able to access my inventory to switch gear/weapons/amulets when in combat and to also change me spells and tactics. *wanders off to look into it*

It would suck to have to do this, but it would still be better than the current 8 ability limit. Seriously, this is one of my most hated things about combat in this game.

Can we have 4 more skill slots? Please? How hard could that be to code it into the game? In a game with so many abilities and ability trees, being limited to only 8 is freaking infuriating.

All the more proof that devs don't give a crap about PC, but they develop games for consoles and their shitty ass gamepads.

Or just let us customize each button on the quickbar. I'd switch out 'Search', 'Hold', 'Mount' etc. with abilities instead.

Its because a dev thought "every ability" should be 1 quick button press away. Because of More action, more awesome, more responsiveness, etc. The 8 button ability is there because of the game being designed around a controller.

But it isn't just one button on consoles.  You also need to press a shift button to access half of the 8 abilities.  And since a shift button is needed, why not add a 2nd shift button, and make it 12 abilities?  That would have been enough, and allowing the less-used abilities like the focus ones into the radial menu would have been even better.  As it stands, it is simply too limited for everyone, for no good reason.

While I would like more Quickslots - ideally one per every Active ability - at least we do not have to assign Passive abilities to the quick-bar.

Surprised this hasn't been a mod yet (adding 1-2 more ability slots) although the engine is apparently difficult to mod.

Would love to have an official Creation Kit like in Fallout and Skyrim. We'd have so many possibilities :D

Wouldn't compare an MMO to Dragon Age.... Or, well, Inquisition does feel like an MMO at times, a single-player one that is. With a very limited hotbar.

Exactly. :D My point, though, was that limiting abilities to 8 because multiplayer is unnecessary since there are multiplayer games (MMO's) that have much more.

Well, sure. But it's still not because they needed to "dumb-down the game for console peasants". Us console peasants played the game just fine with the radial menu.

They needed the dumb down the game because they wanted multiplayer on all platforms and didn't feel the need to make a super special PC version of the game.

There are lots of design decisions that were focused on controller use, that they didn't bother to change for PC users, sadly. The limited hotkey wasn't one of them.

I realize I'm late to the discussion, but having just now reached a point where a toon has a ninth ability, this ridiculous limitation has probably been the end of DA:I for me. Luckily I discovered it before paying for the latest DLC (because, coincidentally, the server was down when I tried to buy it).

This has nothing to do with consoles. I played DA:O and DA2 on XBOX. You could always reach your "not hot buttoned" abilities through the radial menu. This was obviously purposely removed.

So now I am essentially forced to take abilities that I'll never be able to use even if they are situationally useful. For example, my Inquisitor Warrior has no room for for Line in the Sand but it is something I necessarily have to spend a point on just to get to other more generically useful skills. This odd game mechanic (or lack thereof, really) is basically wasting my efforts to advance my character.

I don't understand why the developer would intentionally prevent me from using abilities I've paid for or discourage me from trying to go farther in the game. I certainly have no need for DLC to increase my level now.

Such a ridiculous limitation that has never been necessary in prior DA titles...

Yes i hate the 8 bar ability limit too. I hope if they do anymore MP for the games it is made way after single player game is finished. Also I find it odd that they attached MP to the game instead of just making it stand alone. Like work on SP first than do MP maybe sell it as it own seperate game for those who want it.

Its still designed because they want immediate response. No tinkering with menus, because that is considered too complex for the target audience.
