I role-played that my Inquisitor and Cassandra made an (unconscious decision) from the start to always fight by each other's side, so she always came with my Inquisitor. When my Inquisitor romanced Cassandra, I had a sword made for Cassandra (the avenger model) with the inscription "A Flame That Shatters Night", and I head-canoned, as a response, Cassandra had a sword made for the Inquisitor (based on the Sulevin blade model) called "Cassandra's Promise". Other than Cassandra, I really tried to mix it up for my second play through. However, my favorite party was Cassandra, Sera or Varric and Dorian.

The must have crews varies by quizzy:
Alcina- Iron Bull, Cole/Sera, Solas/Dorian
Kamaria- Sera, Iron Bull, Blackwall
Dhiren- Dorian, Iron Bull, Sera
Ryal- Cassandra, Blackwall, Vivienne
Dhreya- Iron Bull, Cassandra, Cole
Cenise- Solas, Cassandra, Iron Bull
Liam- Cassandra, Sera, Vivienne
Ferinda- Blackwall, Iron Bull, Dorian
Doudrin- Cassandra, Blackwall/Iron Bull, Solas
Unfortunately Varric gets no consistent love once I can recruit Sera ![]()
He rides the bench unless I just really miss his banter. I just pop him into the rotation as a palate cleanser.

Cassandra, Varric, Dorian. If I had room for one more I might bring Bull.
Don't particularly like the other ones. In fact, I think some of 'em should be sacrificed to R'hllor.

Always Varric
Often Bull, Blackwall and Viv
Sometimes Cassandra, Dorian
Very rarely Solas
Didn't recruit Sera or Cole in my current playthrough

I always bring Solas with me, he usually has something interesting to say. I prefer Iron Bull as my own personal tank, Cassandra usually disagree with me. I try to avoid Sera for the same reason, so I choose Varric. I like to have Dorian with me, his banters are both funny and smart but I'm almost always a mage so three mages...that's not the best idea for exploring far reaches of a map.

My most used - Vivienne, Blackwall, Cassandra/Varric.
Leftout in skyhold most of the time - Solas and Dorian.

My A team is always Cassandra, Cole, Solas. The lore found in the banter between Cole and Solas is too informative and interesting to miss. Their interactive dialogue is also infinitely useful. Cole can read thoughts and memories (even imprints in certain locations) while Solas has an absurd amount of knowledge with The Fade and Elvhen magic/history. Cassandra is a Seeker and a badass and incidentally is my love interest. I trust her more than anyone to have my back. So if you recap, you have a Seeker with templar powers who killed a dragon. An assassin spirit who can probably predict any movements and tactics before they are made. Oh yeah, and a knowledgeable Rift Mage who also happens to be bonded with an Elvhen God... I like those odds.
My B Team would probably have to be Blackwall/Iron Bull, Varric/Sera, Dorian. I'll usually switch Cassandra with Blackwall in my A Team when Grey wardens or darkspawn are involved. Otherwise Iron Bull is extremely powerful as a Reaver if you equip and spec him right, he also is one of the most likable characters in Inquisition. Varric and Sera both have interesting banter, especially when paired with Iron Bull. Dorian is also extremely likable in my opinion and is always my second choice for a mage. His banter is quite fun, especially with Solas.
Honestly I never use VIvienne because I dislike her as a character. She also is a Knight-Enchanter which is the class I'm always sporting. So I rarely use her.

I try to rotate everybody I recruited in and out on a reasonable basis so everybody gets at least some time to help save the world. Sadly, I think Dorian got used the least. Not that I really disliked him at all, but he might have been the one that appealed to me the least, at least with my first Inquisitor.

My A-teams for each Inquisitor:
Knight Enchanter Alessandra - Cassandra, Dorian and Varric
DW Assassin Natalia - Cassandra, Vivienne and Dorian
Archer/DW Tempest Julian - Cassandra, Vivienne and Solas
Rift Mage Demetria - Iron Bull, Cole and Solas
2H Reaver Alessandra II - Blackwall, Sera and Dorian
As to who gets benched, it depends on each of my Inquisitors. But I rotate team members to share screen time and banter.

I usually try to bring two warriors out on quests if possible and almost never double up on mage or rogue class... unless again, Inner Circle quests. So rogue quizzy never gets Varric, Sera, or Cole, and mage quizzy never gets Viv, Dorian, or Solas.
There are exceptions, or course. In my DW assassin game, I treated quizzy like a warrior because she was a badass, and often brought Varric or Sera out for quests. In another PT, I'm trying a magequisition, with quizzy, Dorian, Viv, and Solas out on every possible quest. But that game is on hold for the time being while I take my dwarf 2H warrior into the deep roads.

2 mages? Really ..Hmmm. cool I never dared to do that for big boss fights!
I almost always run a two mage party. If I'm a mage the other mage is Dorian. If I'm a rogue or warrior I bring Dorian and Viv.

Yeah. I've never been scared of a two mage party. As long as your tank is up to the job of drawing aggro, they can be devastating!

When I first started RPGing I would always go warrior and even with DAO back when it first came out I usually rolled a warrior and ran a two warrior party. But as I've evolved I find that it is all about how you spec and manage your party more than anything. In DAI once I changed tactics to have the warrior follow themselves it made things much more pleasant!
I think in DAI Cass and the Wall are more than adequate to take the hits and draw aggro on nightmare. Bull takes more management if you leave him 2H. But even then with the right skills and masterworks he's fine too.

Dreamteam: Vivienne-Varric-Cassandra/IB
Nopeteam: Cole-IB-Solas
I only bring IB into dreamteam because he is my canon romance, tho I don't like him and I would prefer Cullen but he hates qunari.

My warrior team is Cassandra, Varric but I vary mages quite a bit
My mage team is Cassandra, Varric and Iron Bull.
I imagine my archer/rogue team would be Cassandra, Iron Bull and probably Vivienne
PS: I bring Cassandra and Varric because I like them most out of all companions. I tend to stick with the people I like.

My male human mage always had Cassandra with him, except in the very few instances where she cannot be there as a result of the plot, such as Cole's quests.
My mage had a bad feeling when waking up in the cells in Haven with a strange painful mark of magic on his hand, and then hearing about the conclave, and then seeing the breach. He feared it was his fault and that's why he forgot. He was mostly an Equitarian and in some ways a Loyalist in the Fraternity of Enchanters, so when Cassandra showed up it was the first time since leaving the Circle that he actually felt safe, from others and from himself. He noticed how she helped him when the mark stunned him, and he agreed to disarm when she told him to. Afterward he believed that much of their success was owed to her and that she should be present for the events that affected the Inquisition, and he still wanted her around as a safety measure in case something happened with him. All this grew into a romance, and they continued to stick together from there.
So it basically comes down to choosing two companions after her. This was all without any foreknowledge of events.
Champions of the Just: Varric and Solas.
(Non-canon) In Hushed Whispers: Vivienne. (Dorian is forced.)
Heart Burn: Vivienne and Solas.
Crestwood: Cole and Blackwall. Then switched Cole with Varric when meeting up with female archer Hawke.
Wicked Eyes/Hearts: Vivinne and Blackwall.
Here Lies the Abyss: Varric and Blackwall.
What Pride Had Wrought: Vivienne and Solas.
Doom Upon all the World: Dorian and Blackwall.
Then for side areas and quests as a percentage of map activities...
The Hinterlands: Varric 90%, Solas 90%, Blackwall 30%, Vivienne 10%, Sera 5%.
The Storm Coast: Blackwall 90%, Solas 80%, Sera 70%, Varric 40%, Cole 10%.
The Fallow Mire: Varric 90%. Solas 90%. Iron Bull 10%. Blackwall 1% (for the Memories of the Grey).
Forbidden Oasis: Sera 60%, Solas 60%, Dorian 20%, Blackwall 20%, Iron Bull 1% (to smash the ground open for loot).
The Western Approach: Varric 50%, Dorian 50%, Blackwall 50%, Iron Bull 10%, Solas 10%.
The Hissing Wastes: Dorian 99%, Sera 90%, Varric 10%, Blackwall 5%, Solas 1% (to activate the elven artifact).
Emprise du Lion: Varric 80%, Blackwall 50%, Solas 45%, Dorian 10%, Cole 10%, Vivienne 10%.
The Exalted Plains: Vivienne 60%, Solas 60%, Sera 55%, Varric 50%, Blackwall 45%, Dorian 40%, Cole 40%, Iron Bull 20%.
The Emerald Graves: Sera 50%, Solas 40%, Cole 30%, Vivienne 30%, Dorian 25%, Iron Bull 20%, Varric 10%, Solas 10%.
The Temple of Dumat (Calpernia's quest): Dorian and Solas.
Cradle of Sulevin: Cole and Solas.
Lost Templar of Dirthamen: Sera and Solas.
Alter of Mythal: Cole and Solas (Morrigan drank, so no dragon fight).
And Companion Quests...
Sera's: Iron Bull.
Dorian's: Didn't get it.
Varric's: Dorian and Blackwall.
Cassandra's: Cole and Solas.
Blackwall's: Varric and Vivienne.
Cole's: Varric and Solas (mandatory).
Vivienne's: Sera and Solas (to kill the Snowy Wyvern).
Solas': Cole.
Iron Bull's: Cole.
Josephine's: Blackwall and Iron Bull (thought we did not attack the assassin).
So as you might be able to tell, Cassandra was my most used companion, and Iron Bull was my least used companion. I think Iron Bull being left behind most times is because 2H sucks, and also because he commanded his own crew. So it felt like he should be with them on missions more than him being with my Inquisitor. Like at Adamant. The Inquisitor clears out the place, and Iron Bull fights demons with his men. Some in the Arbor Wilds. Though now that the Chargers are dead and the game is over, I will probably use Iron Bull a lot for Jaws of Hakkon as well as Descent.

Vivienne never leaves my party. I bring her even if I'm going somewhere like the Black Emporium and she doesn't even bother to show up. Favourite Dragon Age character and one of my all time favourite fictional characters.
Cassandra very rarely leaves the party. Only when others have more interesting things to say, or I've exhausted her banter. Iron Bull is probably third most common party member.
And I don't recruit Cole, so he's my least used by far. I also rarely recruit Dorian, so second least used. Then, Blackwall. He'd get a lot more use if he actually knew anything about the things he pretends to know about, but...y'know. He doesn't.

But I guess it really depends on what I plan to be doing during my time playing that day. If I so happen to be a stupid frick and decide I want to kill a High Dragon? All for Solas, Dorian and Blackwall. If I'm just in the mood for killing Templars, Mages and Demons, then my usual group.

I utterly switch out various characters depending on the zone I happen to be running through at that given time. Given that, I usually end up with a good mix of playing with each one of the companions off and on throughout the game. And I get a lot of interesting banter as a result, too. The only companions I don't LIKE running along with, honestly: Vivienne and Sera. I just don't like their banter too much. Snots, the both of them.
So my game usually ends up looking like this (with my canon Inquisitor, a Lavellan mage):
First half of Hinterlands -- Cassandra, Solas and Varric
Second half of Hinterlands -- Cassandra, Vivienne, and Sera/Solas
Then off to the Storm Coast -- Cassandra/Iron Bull, Blackwall, Sera
Bypass to Fallow Mire -- Iron Bull, Blackwall, Sera
Back to Hinterlands (touch base with Mages and wrap-up Redcliff quests) -- Iron Bull, Vivienne, Cassandra
Therinfal Redoubt -- Cassandra, Solas, Varric
Haven Attacked -- Cassandra, Solas, Cole
Crestwood -- Iron Bull, Dorian with little bit of Solas, and Varric
The Exalted Plains -- Cassandra, Solas, Sera
The Western Approach -- Iron Bull, Dorian, Sera
Hissing Wastes -- Iron Bull, Dorian, Cole
Attack on Adamant and the Fade -- Iron Bull, Dorian and Solas
Emerald Graves -- Solas, Sera, Cassandra
Emprise du Lion -- Blackwall, Dorian, Cole
Descent DLC -- Cassandra/Iron Bull, Varric, Dorian
Forbidden Oasis -- Cassandra, Cole, Dorian
Then the Dragons -- Cassandra, Iron Bull, Dorian/Solas
Jaws of Haakon -- Cassandra/Iron Bull, Solas/Dorian, Varric/Cole
Final Battle -- Blackwall, Dorian, Cole

It depends on the Inquisitor I'm playing with:
1st run as KE I took almost every possible combination of party in order to hear the party banter (unluckily the banter trigger was really poor);
2nd run as qunari warrior: Cassandra, Sera (romance with her), Vivienne => Ladies team ready to kick ass!
3rd run (again with the KE of the 1st run): Cassandra, Varric, Solas

With a warrior inquisitor, my team is usually formed by Varric, Cassandra or Iron Bull and Dorian.
sometimes I exchange Dorian by Solas. I've barely used Vivienne, and I've never used Cole or Sera, I don't know why but using a rogue I prefer Varric using his Bianca. In a few ocassions I've used Blackwall.
What can I say i like the banter between Dorian, Varric and Iron Bull...

Sera is always at my side. Usually Dorian too.
Vivi and Schmolas can stay in Skyhold.
Same !
I also like to have Blackwall with me or Cassandra if I need a warrior , I don't usually choose Iron Bull.

My most [balanced] team: Vivienne, Iron Bull, Sera. The banter is just too good
At one time I ran Vivi, Dorian, Iron Bull
But I do switch out members a lot. Vivienne is probably always there.
I play as a mage so sometimes I go crazy Vivi, Dorian, Solas.
Least used would probably be Blackwall/ Varric
