I've recently done a run-through with Cole as a constant and it's just amazing how much insight he gives to parts of the game, especially bits of the landscape. Walking past a burning building that I'd usually just not even register, and having him tell you about the people who lived their or the events that happened before, it's kinda like doing a tour of your hometown with a historical guide (except he's all fluffy and sweet). You learn things about the paths and alleyways you've walked down countless times, but just never taken a moment to consider.
Other than that, I try to switch them up as much as possible. It's easier when I get to Skyhold (and with the PC mod that increases masterwork drops). Once I'm there, I tend to craft a ton of "guard on hit" clothing for everyone and then I can usually take whoever I want. I've been in a all rogue party (and oh boy was the fight over quickly) and all Mage (with Viv as tank). It really lets you get all the banter.
