PC soloers, do you cap your frame rates?

After having failed over two dozen times at N2.III on Insanity, I am in desperate need of an encouraging pat on the back or a confirmation that, yes, I really suck that much. It seems I either stick to the closed half of the Rio map and sooner or later get screwed by the AI BS "you killed a unit, so I'll spawn it again right behind you", or I try to move more around the map and get shredded by Marauders, Ravagers and/or Banshee's warp balls performing veritable U-turns.

A friend of mine raised the issue that it might be not just that the map is shitty, but because I play at 60 FPS and that affects the difficulty.

I want to ask all those PC players who solo on Gold and especially Platinum, do you cap your frame rate (at 30 FPS, for example), or not (and if it's the latter, at what FPS are you playing)?

I don't cap my framerate; most of my solos are at 60.

Speaking of N2.III, what weapon are you using - rev or katana? And what's your general strategy/build?

60fps offers better experience for aiming. 30fps is quite choppy and anything below that makes aiming harder than the enemies.

EDIT: And yes, framerate affects enemy accuracy. The higher the framerate, the more accurate they become. 120+fps is a nightmare.

Once the FPS drops somewhere below ~52 it becomes super annoying and the screen stutters too much, because I'm used to playing on stable 60 FPS all the time.

30 FPS is hell on Earth.

Build

The Revenant, while better, makes me too stationary, and it doesn't work that well against shields. I typically spam Katana Disruptor shot, Carnage and grenade for TB + FE and I cycle around the closed half of the map (stopping for damage dealing in the vicinity of the ammo boxes, except the one in the open at the bottom of the stairs.) Occasionally I try to go to the other side of the map to prevent being encircled by new spawns, but the Marauders, Ravagers and the boss units almost always cost me something in terms of consumables on the trip back.

EDIT: Next thing I was thinking of trying is slapping an Adrenaline Mod on and going balls to the wall with only 4 levels of Fitness. :D

^ Ya, katana is the better option. I basically stayed near the box of shame and circled those ammo-friendly boxes for the duration of the game - looks like you're doing the same.

Well, good luck. Reapers are a PoS on that map with ravagers that can shoot through the slightest crack and banshee warp balls that make U-turns to hit you.  <_<

Edit: CM is better than AM in my opinion, especially if you're staying near those boxes for the most part.

Don't feel to bad, I just failed my 3rd straight platinum Justicar solo on White vs Cerberus, 3 straight wave 10 devices - I'm not soloing that **** map ever again.

OT, I'm not at 60 FPS as my PC can't handle it, pretty sure I'm at 30 - it's not to bad as I'm used to it.

Lol, I'd rather play on console than cap my fps. And that's saying something...

how does that work?

I once tried to cap to 30, but the results were super weird, the graphics took a much harder hit than I expected (as in, everything went way too ugly), the AI behaved very odd at times, and I had trouble aiming. But my toaster doesn't really do solid 60 when uncapped, on the rare occasions when I payed attention it seemed to vary between 40 and 55.

Why not just try and see?

And yes, I can imagine what a huge pain in the butt this challenge is on platinum. Have you tried a full fitness build?

Yep, those ravagers and heat seeking warp balls are loads of fun. And when I say fun I mean no fun at all...

Having looked at clusum's video, I think I gotta move every so often to the other side of the map, to prevent en masse spawns that cut off both my way forward and backward and are too big to deal with in a short amount of time. Problem is, he is from another planet, and has some pheromones that repel warp balls and Marauder's Phaeston acting like a hitscan weapon.

Nah, if I take away from Carnage or Grenades I lose too much offensive power, and the Katana is nothing to write home about. I also want Adrenaline Rush for DR and cancelling DoT effects. And no way am I running a 66606 build on a Soldier.

I play from 35-15fps for the most of it. :-) You think you have it hard.

But I've only solo'd gold like 10 times and plat once (flamer GT).

Well, I'm sure you'll get it done sooner or later, but since you seem to be having issues surviving marauder bursts and banshee warps, sacrificing some damage for more shields and health makes sense to me. It's such a tiny little more though (like additional 125 in shields) that it may not mean a thing. Dunno.

Perhaps take the extra grenades evolution (or not) and take AC instead of grenade capacity so you can nuke more/earlier waves that you would without? That might at least make the redoing a bit less painful.

Having recently managed to complete this challenge on gold after a boatload of tries, I can sort of feel your pain (in a diminished, minor way :D). I am a scrub who scuttles at the first sign of trouble, so I did run the length of the map a loooot of times, and I also found ravagers and marauders to be murder. In the end, what worked for me was to go 65663, equip the Revenant and slap Adr mod on. I found the ability to (sometime) hit things at mid-range, and the speed to relocate out of ravagers' los did increase my survivability more than either the more reliable Katana or CM. When leaving the boxes, I would run through the pillars, and use the stairs on the far side from the boxes, I found that to be the safest path - that, and remembering you can take cover on the flimsy rail up the gangway :)

No idea if any of this could be useful to you, but I thought I'd share in the off-chance something here might help. Best of luck, I am sure you'll get it done! :)

If you record at 30 fps the framerate automatically gets capped at 30 fps (and hence the solo becomes easier) even if you play unrecorded games at 60 fps.

If you have ever wondered why the game seems harder sometimes and much easier sometimes, its because even if 2 PCs both play at 60 fps the experience will be vastly differently depending on how powerful your PC is. I have always played ME3 MP at 60 fps from day 1 way back in 2012 and after upgrading my PC a few times the difficulty of the AI has scaled with the upgrade as well so much so that now I find playing Gold on my own host harder than Platinum off host. Even Reapers can be a handful on a Very High End PC and Geth, Collectors and Cerberus are almost unplayable for most players on my host.

I play/record at 60fps, I actually tested going down to 30FPS once for a lark. Created a lot of weird performance issues when it was manually capped on hardware otherwise capable of 60FPS.  I feel, on a PC with capable hardware, this game is meant to run at 60FPS and anything else feels really sluggish and poorly suited to the precision of mouse and keyboard controls.

Would not recommend, in other words.

60 fps ftw, 30 feels plain worng, even if its just the host running at lower framerate and my graphics is still at 60 it just does not feel right...

I'm playing with stable 60fps. I tried 120fps once... that **** is only for masochists. Try it for fun but don't host public games like that.

30fps and below interfers with aiming too much... although AM3 makes you nearly invincible there. ^^

Right then, I guess it's just me being a total scrub at soloing Plat. It's ridiculous how many failed attempts I have between N2.II and N2.III.

Oh, well, I'm gonna be back at it when I have some more free time and I get myself out of the pit of ... self -pity.

You are doing Rio with a BF3 packing the Katana, that is insane and if you pull it off you will certainly have my respect, good luck!

Yeah, I agree with Patrick, that solo doesn't sound easy at all. I wouldn't push myself down if I were you :)

Nope. The actual frame rate and recorded frame rate do not need to be the same. I'm pretty sure all of my videos were recorded 30 FPS rate and played at 60 FPS rate.

My framerate is capped at 120, and you CANNOT dance around coverless like you see in all the cool kid videos, you will be snapping at least, if not out right hugging cover.

I might do 60 for "an advantage", but I don't think I could ever go back to 30, the enemies feel like they're full of stupid and jello, because I've played too long at a snappier pace. 60 seems like the sweet spot, enemies are mean but not ridiculous, and you won't lose all your friends due to rage-quits.

recording

My twitch vids stream at 60, my home frame-rate is 120.
