This is getting way off topic, but I'd be interested in how you handle some of the tougher boss battles post-Skyhold, like the Fear Demon at the end of Abyss, as a solo warrior with no specialization/focus skills on Nightmare. Maybe start a new thread? I just completed that particular battle as a 2H Champion, and it took every resource at hand (potions, grenades), full party, and two focus skills at full 3 bars, and it still was a close run thing. I ran the battle 3 times and ended up with a full party wipe-out 2 out of 3 times.

I started soloing very late, for the first time in Jaws of Hakkon, so it's a bit hard to answer that question as I never really invested enough time in a second playthrough. I started another strictly solo warrior and stopped around level 8 or 9 I think, pondering whether I should try In your heart shall burn now or level a bit more. Champions of the Just was brutal, but still doable.

It's generally hard to get the pacing right, easy to overgear/overlevel fights etc. I remember doing Into the Abyss at a proper level with relatively crappy gear though, and it was indeed really hard even in a full party.

I'll try to dig an older save and see what I can do (if I can do anything, that is). What level were you on your Champion?

I would guess allowing Hawke and Stroud to hold most of Nightmare's aggro would make sense.

My memory is rusty, but isn't one of them "unavailable" for this fight? :P

Hawke and whatever warden are available for the Nightmare boss fight in the fade.  And both drink infinite health pots IIRC, so they are unkillable in combat, essentially. They might get stunned from time to time though.

So I found a save and did Into the Abyss at level 15, using T2 gear and T2 masterworks (+3 Guard on Hit, 3s Walking Fortress and 3x Hidden Blades). Compared to the gear I used when I did it for the first time at that level on my very first playthrough, I only replaced my arms and shield with +stagger on being hit (for about 30% total), and made a new chestplate with the Hidden Blade, but with the same armor (174) and from the same schematic. I think the schematic was from the Inquisition Power perk, but I'm not sure. I also went to the Hinterlands to buy 5 elfroots, because I was out of regen pots.

The fights before the Fade and the Fade itself (in particular the spirit-shooting wraiths) were far harder than the Nightmare for me.

I'm not sure how easier it is to solo than it is to party, but essentially the only danger in this fight are the little fear demons that shoot spirit bolts. The basic tactic is to kill all the adds as soon as they spawn as first priority, and to combat roll out of the yellow AOE (which indeed Hawke and Stroud keep taking like champs). For Terrors, just keep them knocked down. Coincidentally, Sword and Shield is hard to beat at this particular game.

Total fight time was between 12-13 minutes, far from being a speedy kill, but that's not what I'm after :)

The build I use is essentially a low level version of the one I use at 27: http://imgur.com/a/PXm6R. The only difference is I had to use Lunge and Slash instead of Horn of Valor, and I was missing all the passives and improved versions that 12 levels and a perk can buy.

I didn't use War Horn in this fight in particular (no guard to destroy, no AOE, nothing to fear), which means I could theoretically solo it at level 13 without changing anything to my tactics, though War Horn helped a lot against Pride Demons.

I'll upload a video tomorrow (it's processing) if you want to see how it goes.

Thanks! This was on Nightmare difficulty?

I had the same experience with a full party: the Fade fight immediately before the Fear boss fight was actually the most difficult for me. Mostly because I was conserving resources, but double Despair demons + Pride + wraiths on a battlefield that has obstacles was surprisingly difficult.

Yes, Nightmare on Nightmare. I actually gave up at one point, the last Pride Demon before the Fade, I ran away and followed Clarel without killing it (I was out of potions and in a hurry to try the Fear boss). To my surprise, the game was ok with that.

Anyway, here's the vid of the fight:

Guard and combat roll to the rescue! Nice video. That last wave of Terrors + Spiders is where I'd wipe out with my full party. That was the only place where you got a bit low in health, everything else looked pretty solid.

I also liked the second use of the focus skill as a finisher.

For my mage character i am liking the fade touched dawnstone that gives 25% health recovery over 10 seconds since it works off damage done to barriers as well as health.

My favorites:

Guard on Hit (any class)

Hidden Blades (offensive characters)

Horn of Valor (support character)

Walking Fortress (Blackwall)

1% Heal on Hit (Necromancers)

I started taking these more seriously when playing Jaws of Hakkon on Nightmare.  The guard on hit really helps keep your AI companions upright.
