The vanishing audio bug has been around since beta days. It presents itself particularly in the multiplayer side, where I can count on the audio dropping at least once every 1-2 hours. When it goes, there's typically a "crackle" over the speakers, not unlike when you unplug a headphone plug from a jack...or, when the audio drivers experience a failure (which I believe is what is happening here.)
It was suggested that a workaround to "fix" the audio when it disappears is to go into settings and return your audio to the default. This does indeed work, at least on the PS4. However, I observed some additional information that may help the devs track this bug down a bit. I suspect the drivers are crashing and not recovering until you "reboot" them, either by restarting the game client or by resetting the audio to default.
It seems that anytime you change the audio settings from their default, you "plant the seed" for the audio bug to manifest. For example, I will often turn the music way down to around 20 or so (I love the soundtrack to this game, but the same track looping over and over tends to grate on my nerves after awhile.) For the sake of following up on my hunch, I purposely left the audio on its default settings. Over the course of several days I haven't had the audio crash once, ALTHOUGH I will often hear that aforementioned "crackle" over the speakers when the audio would normally have cut out. It's possible there's a bit of code that is being passed to the audio drivers, and anything other than plain vanilla default settings will trigger a failure of the drivers.
I hope the devs can finally pin this one down and put it to rest, it's one of those niggling little recurring problems that blemishes an otherwise outstanding game.
