So maybe trying to tackle vinsomner at 19quizzy/18party ISN'T a good idea (shocker right) but I was wondering if you'd recommend lightning resistance tonics or lightning resistance armor?
Or both? It's just hard but all these living dragons are getting annoying >( Much prefer dead ones :D
(Yes I know dispel get's rid of the static cage but I need usually 3 casts for a full clear so I'm gonna need cole KE qunari quizzy and S&S Bull to eat 1 or 3 tics. dorian can just...not be near us I guess.)

I guess this applies to dragons in general to be quite fair but lightning dragons are the more annoying >.>''')

Tonics of lightning resistance are helpful, yes.

The static circle only causes damage if it overlaps another circle, so you should keep your ranged characters spread out (and you won't even have to worry about dispelling theirs). Just don't take a party of only melee characters, and you shouldn't need multiple dispels to neutralize the effect.

If the dragon does its wing buffet directly after, it should bring everybody into range of a single dispel anyway, though you can take a lot of damage on the way in (which is where the tonics come into play).

You can also come back later at a higher level and/or with better equipment. It really does make a difference.

As for general advice, make sure everybody is targeting the same limb. Each limb has a damage threshold, and once you hit it, the dragon will stagger and reposition itself (the limb starts bleeding constantly at that point). Repeat for all four limbs, and the dragon should eventually fall prone for a short while (it face plants and can't really do anything until it recovers). I'm not sure what the criteria is for having it fall prone, so I just clear actions after damaging the final limb and let everybody pick their own targets; it usually takes another minute or so for it to come down.

The problem here is unless I swap cole to bow my only ranged is dorian.
Not that rogue's AI is good at all to begin with but I guess doing that might mean he'll die a little less.

The only thing I would add is that Dispel/Spell Purge also clear the circles.

I defeated Vinsomer on Nightmare at level 14 (that's 5 under level) using the advice given above. I was geared up with anti-electric armor (mostly just leg add-ons, but some helmets too) and tonics and took minimal damage from circles and breath attacks. It helped to have Sera do a Thousand Cuts as the first attack to cut it's HP in half. B)

A lot of people find the lightning circles or gain guard of dragons annoying, but for me, it's the one-shot kill AoE attack when they drop from the air that annoys the heck out of me. Greater Mistral uses that one-shot attack. Tip: don't stand under dragons when they are hovering or coming in for a landing.

Then take Sera (she can eat dragons with her abilities) or Varric (Bianca's not always as powerful, but she'll still get the job done).

You're given multiple companions for a reason. You should be using them.

Lawl I actually rarely swap party members because I freak out I'll miss a line of dialogue

Yeah dispel gets rid of them but that doesn't matter if I they die, which one tic sometimes does. Very annoying >.>'''
What even gives tier 3 lightning resist? A cloth defence right?

"Don't cross the streams."

Mat wise, Plaideweave, Velveteen, Highever, Ring Velvet, King's Willow, and Plush Fustian Velvet can give electric resist in a defense slot.

Resist tonics are probably the cheapest way to get elemental resist for the specific dragon you want to fight.  Willivan in Val Royeaux sells all the resist recipes for something like 53 credits.  Other than that, Mighty Offense and upgraded area Regen are good.  Bees just because they are bees.

Storm dragons are vulnerable to spirit damage, so make sure your non-electric staffs have spirit runes.  Spirit damage from non-KE mages probably isn't too great in SP.  Mark of Death is helpful, depending on how decent Cole is spec'd and equipped.

Whether or not you need to dispel/purge the annoying effect on every character will depend a lot on their builds and your composition.

If your really wanting to just get him down try this.

Get Your main , with cole, and sera. Try to get them both descent weapons if possible, you can get easy tier 3 dual blade daggers from hissing waste which is what I used around level 10. Farm some focus until your level 3 focus is charged, should not take but 3-4 fights at most.

Then as you engage dragon, before you have cole use Mark of Death, pop a mighty offense tonic on everyone and then have your main and sera use your focus abilities, Solas also has nice  focus ability to use also if you like.

Thats pretty much it, he will die in one mark of death, which is about 8 seconds. I used this tactic on my nightmare playthrough and I killed every dragon well below the dragons level, I think I killed the highland ravager  just as I hit level 20.  Granted I got overpowered very early using hissing waste tombs but this is not my first playthrough so I enjoyed it.

Either way you should be able to use this tactic against any tough opponent and drop them in few seconds on nightmare. Good luck and hope this helps.
