Avvar Archers are brutal, you need to keep them on your tank, or dispatch them really quickly.

Make sure all your party has the best equipment (most powerful armor, it'd be best if everyone had a weapon or armor generating guard on hit). Take Blackwall with you, because his Champion spec makes him indestructible, even to those archers most of the time. When using War Cry and Walking Fortress he is literally unkillable, which is invaluable.

Isolate Avvar Spies with Static Cage, and then kill them before the spell disappears.

And when the two handed Avvar starts spinning, move everyone as far away as you can and pray.

Nothing apart from AOE fear (Horror/Fire Wall) can stop him then, and he one shots EVERYONE (at least on Nightmare) (my Blackwall was able to survive 3 hits with full guard) and stun locks.

I have not figured out a way to stop him (apart from Dorian's Horror) when he's in this mode - he stunlocks melee characters and deflects all projectiles.

Give me your party setup, I may be able to give more suggestions.

Nope, level 23 is fine. Enemies will scale up anyway when you come back higher leveled, but your gear isn't actually getting any stronger, than what you can wear at level 23, so it might be actually more difficult.
I did it on Nightmare, starting at level 22, and finishing at almost 25.

The archers are powerful. There's an ability that helps with that you'll learn as you progress in the plotline.

Well, thanks for the valuable suggestions! Fact is, i can handle them when they are not in big groups...If they are, then it is madness: i basically start hitting and praying, spamming health potions all the way, lol (yeah, i know, fabulous strategy!)...I actually didn't expect this dlc to be this hard, but maybe my equipment was not that good...I'll just try and get some better stuff and going back later.

Anyway, as a party i usually use Dorian, Varric and Cassandra (who tanks pretty well, too, and is quite useful against demons). I am a two handed templar.

I think you're just under levelled. I'm level 27 and am an hour into the DLC playing as an archer rogue on nightmare. I've faced both the ice giant and the 4 level 30 despair demons - they were pretty easy and I killed them on my first try. Hakkon DLC is best played after you've finished the base game.

No matter what level you go into JoH, make sure your gear is as updated and upgraded as possible. Going into that DLC with mediocre gear will make it really, really hard.

Min level range recommendations:

Casual = 15-16

Normal = 17-18

Hard = 19-20

Nightmare = 23+

I think the worst are the Hakkonite spies.  You can take the archers out with mark of the rift if you have it powered up.  And if you have the aegis,  it helps with the archers in deflecting their shots.  But ain't nothing stopping those spies from stealthing over to and killing you with one shot backstabs.  Generally I play on hard as my base difficulty and they are challenging.  I took my nightmare KE in there and it was rough.  I will say that the enemies that came out of the rifts were not terrible.  To be fair I generally dispell/spell purge the second wave as much as possible.  The Ice Giant was tough but beatable.  The Hakkonites can eat it though.

Hakkonite Spies, as all assassin-archetype enemies, are best trapped in Static Cage. And then they just die quickly, because they have relatively low HP.

When they try to leave the cage, they are paralyzed, damaged and pulled out of stealth, which makes dispatching them easy.

Well, i came back at level 27, with the best gear i could craft, and now i die a lot less than before....

I have another question, though; i have completed the 5 quests required to get the affection of the village, but the quest doesn't update....is it a bug? Or it wil update later?

That quest will only complete after you've killed the final boss of JoH.

Party composition helps too. I started the DLC at level 25, and my team was of knight enchanter Inquisitor, Cassandra, Cole and Dorian. The nastied battles were with some of the fade rifts. The closest I got from a wipe was the Ice giant, Other then that we aways slaughtered any enemy we came across. My Inquisitor never lost barriers, Cole aways stayed in stealth or protected by barries and Cassandra tanked with guard. The most vulnerable party member was dorian.

The 26 level Rift, that spawned like 2 Rage Demons and 3 Fear demons was nasty.

I didn't encounter Ice Giant. I think.

Nor did I encounter those 4 level 30 Despair Demons, everyone was talking about.

I guess I suck at exploring :D

Well, i finished it....I must say that the final boss is very very easy.....i expected A LOT worse, judging from the basic enemies. Also, i expected better rewards....the armor you find before the final boss isn't that special, to be honest

The fade ice giant was like the hardest thing i ever fought in the whole game...And this includes dragons

It is near the coastline, roughly halfway between the starting camp and the boat to the island.

These are on the island. They spawn when you loot the shmuckbait gold there.

Yeah, I had more trouble with Hakkon possessing Gurd Harofsen, than I had with him in Dragon form.

Mainly because in Revenant form he had the giant ice explosion, slaughtering half of my party.

And Dragon was just another Dragon.

With my Assassin I adopted a different strategy.

Instead of going back and getting different gear and set of potions, I reasoned, that he couldn't use this attack, if he died before having an opportunity to use it.

I managed to kill him in less than 15 seconds. And he was paralyzed by Mark of the Rift the entire time.

We shall see how the next playthrough goes, when I will not have such crazy DPS :D
