I would prefer this feature to getting a game over when the PC dies but both the companions are still up and moving. If I can medi-gel them, they should be able to medi-gel me.

OMG, I forgot about that. That's probably the best reason for why they should implement companion control, game over when Shepard gets KO'd is total BS.

This is relevant

Yeah, there are people who consider the whole concept of controlling the other squad members to break immersion, but I consider the instant game over when the PC goes down while a squadmate is still up to be a bigger, more annoying problem that also breaks immersion.

And given that I don't want to rely on the game's A.I. to control the squad mates while they get over to me to med-gel me back up, and an insta-revive every time you die until you run out of med-gel would just take the steaks out of death, give me control over the full squad.

I like it the way it is.  It's more immersive controlling the one character, for me.

You're telling me I could have spent the whole game running around as Wrex or Garrus, and they cut it?!

Bioware. Why.

For a very simple reason. And to add, it was removed at a relatively late stage in ME1, which is why the companion system is so awkward in it.

The reason they removed the companion control, at least based on the interviews I've read, was that they realized that they wanted this game to Shepard's story and the player to constantly see things as from the point of view of Shepard. So switching between characters in combat situation would break that, so they removed it from the game to strengthen it.

I am actually in favor of not having the companion control not just because of that narrative support, which I do actually like, but also because in a fast-tempo game like ME, I don' see something like companion control being very effective to implement.

ME companions exist for:

1. banter during combat

2. individual comments during cutscenes

3. decoys

4. eye candy

At no point have I ever relied on any companion to kill a target. If they do, it's a welcome bonus but usually I do all the work myself. Which is weird since your squad has 100% accuracy, so even if you give them a Tempest, they'll still be able to hit enemies at long range with it. Maybe I'm just too good at killing stuff for them to keep up...

Garrus with a Black Widow is good at stealing kills away from me.

I don't mind only playing as my character so long as the characters had skill sets like in ME1 where they were more or less duplicate versions of the classes Sheperd could be. While there were differences in the aliens, it was clear that Wrex = Vanguard, Garrus = Infiltrator, Tali = Engineer, and Liara = Adept. If they were like that, I don't see a reason. But if they have cool things like say... Kasumi's move where she could sneak behind people and obliterate them? I want that. I want to be able to do that. It's lame that I cannot ever do it.

Instant death game overs don't bother me when I can't switch characters. They DO bother me when I can. Although, it WOULD be fun to play a challenge playthrough where you do an escort mission the whole game...

I wouldn't mind it.

But I rather not have a game over screen when I go down, that is just annoying. Your team should be able to bring up back up.

And don't say the AI would be over complex, because it is not.

They did in did it in REPUBLIC COMMANDO, which was another shooter. If your character went down you can order your troops to pick you up or clear the area THEN pick you up, and that is an OLD game.

Step up your game Bioware.

Actually, it's not even super uncommon to have it. Honestly, it's kind of exciting to see it happen.

I love the idea for a number of reasons.

1. It is something new in a ME game and can work with the Andromeda story, since there are no returning characters and won't break any canons.

2. Also, more palatable to new and old players.

3. Gives everyone a chance to play a different combat role in one single game (though less powerful).

4. Experience the various skill sets and can then settle on the right one on a re-play.

5. Easily introduces the concept of selecting and playing your MP character in the SP game.

This can easily be seen as an improved ME game. It has all the elements of one...familiar races, cinematic story telling, weapons, armours, biotics, MP play, bonding with squad mates, the Mako,  a ship (Pathfinder is the name?) and romance options....

I see no pitfalls, with the idea. The purists can stick with their oiginal character, with their virginity untouched..

Yeeees I do.

A gambit system would be nice too.

You can't say it's like DA anymore because they got rid of the gambit system in DA, hah!

I don't really see the problem with having the ability, since it won't really have any meaningful effect on the gameplay itself, save for mapping a button/key that switches between companions. In DA I almost never do it unless I made a mistake and the PC went down. I would've liked this in ME1 in particular, because of the weapon restrictions. Like, when taking back the Mako from Haliat, because I was rolling a Vanguard at the time, I couldn't snipe them one by one from my vantage point, but I did have Ashley with me. I could've switched to her and had "her" pick them off for me.

So just let the squadmates fight it out under AI control when Shepard drops. They win or they don't win.

Some how, that's worse than the instant game over. In that scenario, I'm stuck waiting for however long it takes them to win or lose, which could well take several minutes where I'm just sitting there, unable to do anything.

So basically like spectator view in MP? If they implemented something like this, it'd be preferable that the companions actively try to help revive the PC rather than just go off on their own and continue in combat in lieu of being able to actually control them.

Bioware could just add a restart option if you don't want to wait.

so it would be

1 revive me

2 clean up the area

3 restart last check point

Huh? You'd have the same ability to reload that you have at any other moment in the game, if you wanted to use it. Reload the moment Shepard drops and it's exactly what we have now, no?

Do consoles have some sort of restriction on that? Or is this a case where the mere presence of the option to let the squadmates keep fighting would destroy your ability to skip that and reload.

Huh. So DA:O wasn't the Warden's story, apparently.

I'm gonna have to disagree with the devs on that one.

The gameplay kind of makes this a weird hybrid anyway, since we can direct their movements to some degree, make them switch weapons and we have access to their powers at any time. About the only thing we can't do is look through their weapon sights.

This, pretty much.

I'm aware that the "your squadmates continue to act of their own accord, either reviving you or killing everything or dying horribly while you sit there, unable to do anything but watch" option would likely include the option to pause and restart from the last check point, but if they're going to do that, it would be more time efficient just to game over and immediately restart.

I've gone through this enough in MP to know that I would hate the 'you're helpless to do anything but watch' option and would just select the restart every time. The only time I have ever thrown my controller at the wall in anger has been when I was in spectator mode in an ME3 MP match. Sitting there, unable to act, and just waiting is the worst, least enjoyable experience in a game that I can describe. Including it would serve no purpose but to incentivise me to restart.

Either let me control the squadmates, even if it's only when the PC is down, or do the instant game over restart option.

Could you walk me through how leaving the squadmates fighting leads to time inefficiency? I don't see how hitting F9 would work differently in the two cases.

And why on earth would you need to pause before reloading if the squadmates are still fighting? The worst that could happen is that they might win and you wouldn't need to reload at all.

Well, firstly, I do play on consoles so there is no F9. I suppose they could have a hud come up to where I'd just press a button to restart and wouldn't have to pause it, but still, I'd prefer the instant game over to wasting time watching the squad mate A.I. fumble about.

I have this problem with being forced to watch but unable to participate. To be hyperbolic, it's a borderline torturous experience for me. Watching them doing things - and failing miserably at it - while I'm unable to do anything is excruciating for me. As for why, I can't explain it. Might be some deep psychological issue or maybe it's just a personal quirk, but even a situation like this lasting ten seconds is too long for my enjoyment.

And in case it isn't clear, I don't have high expectations for the squadmate A.I. Bioware doesn't have a great track record there and I don't expect them to excel at it this time around.

Well, it is inefficient in that the AI will always be greatly inferior to the player, who can resolve the conflict faster rather than sticking him/her behind spectator mode. At this point, if the PC is down for the count, immersion is already taking a hike if you're seeing more than the downed character does, so why bother with a spectator mode when the game can simply allow you to take the reigns of one of the active squad members? Plus, it would make it much easier to simply allow the player to use one of the remaining squad members to go to the PC and revive and get them all back on the field.

While I would be a bit interested to see how companions fare without the all-powerful PC to carry them, I can't help but feel that I'd be terribly frustrated to watch them, especially if their AI is lacking.
