If you havent played far enough in the game then please stop reading.

Anyways for those of you who have played the game I noticed an error with his introduction to the N7 program feel free to correct me however I feel like it's simply an oversight by the developers. If you convince him to join the N7 program then he will afterwards be getting a tattoo in the citadel to make his decision "official" it's here that he states that he will start off as an N7 recruit. This shouldn't be possible according to the Codex if you don't believe me then here is the entry.

"Initially, candidates train for more than 20 hours per day, leading small combat teams through hostile terrain with little sleep or food. Trainees who do well are awarded an internal designation of N1 and are invited to return. Subsequent courses - N2 through N6 - are often held off-planet and include instruction in zero-G combat, military free-fall (parachuting), jetpack flight, combat diving, combat instruction, linguistics, and frontline trauma care for human and alien biology.

The highest grade of training, N6, provides actual combat experience in combat zones throughout the galaxy. If the trainee survives these scenarios in "admirable and effective fashion," he or she finally receives the coveted N7 designation. N7 is the only ICT designation that may be worn on field or dress uniforms."

How did he jump straight to the rank of N7? According to this all candidates must rise from N1-N6 and if he/she survives as an N6 then he/she will receive the N7 designation. It isn't stated anywhere that he received his N1. Anyone care to explain? or am I right?

I always saw it as an inconsistency.

Same goes with multiplayer's N7. Everyone can be N7.

In the defense of the multiplayer characters we know nothing about them, but they're shown guarding Anderson in the trailer and have access to some pretty darn good tech/implants, which implies a certain level of skill.

. . .or are we just talking about the player ranking silliness?

It's all part of the marketing and pushing the n7 logo.
Having James go "I'm going to join the programme and start off as a n1" isn't on-brand.

Well, Mac Walters wrote James, so that makes sense. Usually Mac doesn't seem to care about the lore. He said he had to use fanmade Wikis in order to look up lore whenever he had to.

I think he made this decision, because of the fact that James did survive a life and death situation in a "fashionable" way. He did meet one of the N7 criteria.

I just took it to mean that he was selected for the N program, not that he was necessarily guaranteed the coveted N7 rating. That was just the end goal.

It doesn't surprise me.Me3 was a disaster to be generous(IMO)
James Vega was just a random soldier who happened to be in a cartoon and decided him to be the replacement of a Krogan squadmate instead of giving us Grunt\Wrex.
He looks like a doped up gorilla and i think it's a joke to give him N7 rank.
