Hi

I have recently finished DAII and will soon begin my quest in Inquisition. As this will probably be my only playthrough (my time with the PlayStation is very limited with 2 kids) I need your help in choosing the "perfect" race. I will probably play as a DW Rouge as I loved these in both Origins and DAII. I have read that humans make the most sense storywise but it seems a bit boring? I mean, why play human if you can be something else? Elf would be cool (my warden was an elf) but they seem to be better suited for archers? Dwarfs seem alright but I usually like to play a character that I can relate to and I am a bit too tall to feel like a dwarf. I would love to be a Qunari but a Qunari rouge seems a bit strange. As you can see I find good and bad things with all classes and therefore I need your help. So, in short, what is the best race for a DW rouge if I will do only one playthrough?

I feel like storywise qunari rift mage is the best but if you want to play DW rouge I would recomend elf. Their slender, athletic bodies fit assassin theme perfectly. :)

General consensus seems to be that female elf mage romancing Solas has the most relevance to the key story beats.

Only if you will pretend that your elven First had brain damage and suddenly she doesn't know who she worships. Also, story is a lot about elvens and your protag should know a lot yet you have mindless puppet. Elven warrior and rouge are clan's hunters, they might not know that much about elven history but mage feels awkward.

I'm currently playing an elven DW rogue and it's fun. I find it fitting that with her slender body she can sneak around in hide and stabbing baddies.

I also played human sniper rogue and it was nice gameplay too. I prefer the humans.

With the DW I'm quite squishier than with bow, but the animations of the acrobatic attacks with daggers look fancier. :D

I wouldn't romance Solas just because it's "storywise richer", he's just too eww. Especially after anything I said to him as an elf gave me disapproval.

Human Mage or Dalish Mage/Rogue imo. Female Elf should romance Solas if you do so for impactful story reasons.(I've yet to do so but most players were shocked by the end) My first play through was a Male Mage that romanced Dorian and it was my favorite one.

Human fits best. I'd say elf but they botched it with the temple.

I've never played human or elf, but I can confidently say that neither dwarf nor qunari have strong story connections.  They both work, but neither are the strongest for sure.

My gut is that elf is probably the strongest for this story.  Particularly an elf who romances Solas and denies being the Herald of Andraste.  Second guess would be a human who romances either Cassandra or Cullen and embraces the role of Herald of Andraste.

Thank you guys! My conclusion is that I should either play as a human or as a female elf. As humans are boring I think I will choose the elf. Is it that much of a loss to play as a male elf, not romancing Solas?

We're not gonna spoil anything, but you can't get a certain plot twist as a male elf.

In fact, stay away from this section until you finish your first PT. Otherwise, you'll get every spoiler there is.

That is assuming you haven't already. It's hard to avoid it.

You can't, but you may have a good surprise after playing Jaws of Hakkon (at least, it was a good surprise for me).

I played a pragmatic male Dalish archer elf romanced with Cassandra and I was quite happy with it (I usually enjoy seeing two opposite characters together). So even if you don't have the "real" Solas plot twist, you can still have a good time... it really depends on how you like to play your character.

Human female rogue is the default world state I believe, and it makes story sense. I don't see that gender really makes any difference story wise, but it changes who you can romance.

Female elf with Solas romance has the most impact as the first playthrough, so if you are only going to do one and you want to play something other than human, it makes for an interesting story. There is one spot in particular where the dialogue is bugged, causing your Elven inquisitor to say something stupid that they should already know. If you are on a PC there is a mod to remove it...but if not, it's not really that big of a deal to ignore, IMO. It's mostly there for the benefit of the player anyway, who might be new to the lore. It's no worse than a human asking about the Chantry, or a mage asking about Templars or the Circle...and I can remember doing all of the above over the course of the 3 games.

I agree.

First, you heard wrong. Humans don't make the most sense storywise--well, actually, they kind of do during the first half of the game since you get called the Herald of Andraste and join an Andrastian institution, but that's only really important for the first half of the game.

Without giving anything away, the whole second half of the game (all the way to the end) has many locations and revelations that are far more relevant to Elves. So, if you play an Elf, those revelations (especially for a first playthrough) will give you so much more personal investment and emotional impact.

I personally think playing a female elf who romances Solas (mage or archer) is the best race and romance storywise for a first (possibly only) playthrough for this game. (Especially if you don't want to play a boring ol' human.  ^_^ )

As for class, that's up to you. In this game, Elves get a 25% ranged defense bonus (and they honestly seem to make better archers than my dwarf, even though my dwarf picked the exact same combat bonuses  <_< ), so a mage or archer would be perfect.  ^_^

There's a scene you don't get otherwise as a male elf, with a certain bit of info, as others have said. I stumbled into a Solas romance my first playthrough and it totally affected the way the game felt to me.

The game was written for humans originally. Take that for what you will. Elves could be the coolest outside race though...At least they have a lot of issues that matter to Ferelden and Orlais and the southern Chantry...  but I think elves are overdone. The first inquisitor was an elf. Then the default warden was too. I also think the Warden's origin is very similar (ancient artifact accident) and it has an actual backstory and tie in later with Merrill. Then the last hero of the 4th blight was an elf. There's a smugness about this that rubs me the wrong way.. as if everything sucks but elves. They just keep being major characters. So I'll just stick with my Dalish Warden. One or the other, I say.

If you can stand to look at them for more than 7 minutes, the general consensus is an elf.

But if you wanna feel like a champion, go with human master race.

I found Human mage with arcane and the other knowledge perks to make for a very immersive play through.
After all, the reason you're at conclave is cause you're both a mage and of noble blood (thought to hopefully give your voice more influence at the conclave).

Secondly, for me at least, qunari - any class. As a merc you were hired as muscle to be at the conclave, and as a vashoth, you're not formally associated with a key specific group and can be okay with not knowing who mythal was....

...which brings me to elven mage. A female elven mage brings a very good character to play as. However, not knowing who Mythal was really really broke immersion for me. How could my character, a First to my clans Keeper, not know who Mythal was? :(

With the inclusion of the Descent DLC, dwarves have finally gotten some love they've needed. A rogue seems a good fit for a lyrium smuggler for the Carta, and a warrior would fit the 'muscle' image.

Great tips! I will go with female elf rouge, either an archer or a DW (or maybe a combination?). About Solas I want to get to know him a bit before deciding to romance him. He looks a bit too much like Voldemort for me to trust him at first glance. Besides, my character can't choose romance option purely for story reasons :-)

Oh, I'm sure your Warden was cool as well. Honestly, I do think most people hold a high regard of their very own Warden. I wouldn't say my Aeducan was that awesome, but he has quite a beard. Pfft, Varric's chest hair are the best..really? You sufacer are a bunch of small humans and babies. :P
