Shake it up even more bring back a villain from DA:I as a companion and make calpernia a companion.
Which current companion will leap into DA4?

Calpernia will probably be a companion in DA4 if it takes place in Tevinter, but the topic asks what companion from DA:I will return as a companion in DA4.

My current bet is that the carry-over character won't be a companion, but another member of the Inquisition - specifically, Scout Harding.
why not?
Seems like everywhere you turn in the forums, there's always that one person wanting to romance scout harding.

- Harding,Valta or Shale.
- A Vivienne who loses every privilege and has to start over

- Morrigan

I definitely think Dorian out of all of the DAI companions since we're mossst likely going to Tevinter, and if so, it would only make sense. I think Harding might be a shoe in for a new companion too becuase of her popularity and what not. I'd also be down if Krem was a companion, would really love to have him aboard plus he kicked major ass with his giant maul that's bigger than his entire body alone lmao but seriously I would also prefer to keep cameos as simply cameos and not locked party members if we're talking about past companions. As much as I love Fenris, or any other companion, they should remain as cameos and allow other characters who either weren't companions before or obviously brand new characters to take the spotlight.

I think part of the purpose of moving north is to make as much of a break as possible from the previous games so as to avoid much of the story choice baggage that has been built up.
We should all hope that this proves to be the case!
My current bet is that the carry-over character won't be a companion, but another member of the Inquisition - specifically, Scout Harding.
Harding is certainly a dark horse favorite for the rollover npc, and I think that I would be okay with that.
I also STRONGLY suspect we will head north and finally see some new regions we haven't before...namely Tevinter, and probably a few more as well (I doubt Antiva, but could believe Rivain, Anderfels, Weisshaupt, and Nevarra. Possibly. But I'm almost certain of Tevinter.
If a companion was reincarnated as a companion I'd put my money on Dorian or Iron Bull, but I honestly think they'll make cameos (or maybe they'll be advisors....like Iron Bull is the Cullen of the Inquisition's Northern Chapter....
Thus far, they've not not had multiple nations serve as areas, so I have to accept that we may only access only a couple (similar to Ferelden & Orlais in Inquisition). I REALLY hope that the devs see your suggestion about Dorian & Iron Bull serving as advisors in DA4, as this makes elegant sense given the likely context of the next game??? Someone with a personal connection "behind the scenes" should pass this nugget along - asap!!
Leliana and to a certain extent Morrigan ........... retcons or deus ex machinas.
A mere pinch of Sacred Ashes healed Arl Eamon, so even if Leliana only inhaled some of the dust off of the floor, it's not too much of a stretch to explain her miraculous return from the abyss (had the Warden slain her) or perhaps the Guardian was a bit generous before vanishing. Morrigan had the knowledge to spare the Warden if he/she killed the archdemon, so she probably had a spare trick handy for herself?

Scout Harding is already sort of romanceable, making her a companion wouldn't just be making her romanceable because of feedback, it would be properly finishing what they started in DAI. Not that I think they should only wait to DA 4 to do that.
I was pretty glad to see her back in Descent. Frankly, I wish she had come down with us instead of those other dwarves, I found them both much less interesting. I was certainly much more excited to see her than most anything else in that DLC, a lot of it was on the disappointing side.
Given the limited amount of interaction that I've experienced over three "Descents" with our primary companions, I think that it would have been better for Bioware to just give us a full temporary party composed of Lt. Renn, Scout Harding, and Shaper Valta (perhaps with her as an npc) and the Inquisitors choice of a single previous companion?
I for one speculate that DA4 will take place in Northern Thedas, covering the areas of both Tevinter and The Anderfels, much like Inquisition covered both Ferelden and Orlais. The Anderfels are Tevinter's direct neighbor to the west. If this is indeed the case then Dorian is the strongest prospect for returning characters. Whether he approves, disapproves or Romances the Inquisitor he states in each scenario that he will return to Tevinter. That, in my opinion, is a pretty strong hint.
Varric also states that, regardless if you save Hawke or the Warden Companion, that he will travel to The Anderfels after Corypheus in defeated. Another strong hint and in my opinion long overdue considering the many hints and rumors about what the situation is in The Anderfels and among the Grey Wardens. I can't imagine this being ignored for much longer.
Well reasoned, but I doubt that Varric will be in the mix next time.
I would love to see Velanna again, but alas, she can be killed in Awakening shortly after meeting her.
EDIT: Also, in mine, Varric said he would return to Kirkwall. Weird.
Despite her abrasiveness, Velanna was a companion that I wanted much more of and yet, despite that preference I do not ever expect to see her again. All the more frustrating too knowing that she was the originally planned choice to bond with Justice for DA2!

That said, if the next game heads north then I'm expecting cameo's from Dorian, Fenris, and possibly Iron Bull depending on whether he is still part of the Qun.

I think @Heimdall's got it right. Instead of picking someone because of location, think about the end states for each of the characters. However, I think it's more open than he implies. We know that any Divine's will almost certainly be out. That removes Cassandra and Vivienne. We also know that they aren't interested in retconning any possibly dead companions back to life. However, I don't think any of the companions in DA: I can die, right? So that's a moot point. Finally, we know that no LI will return as an LI in the future. However, that doesn't actually rule them out as companions. They can just be non-romanceable companions. People are making the assumption we are going to Tevinter next, but I'm not convinced at all. There are certainly other places we could go to next.
So, in reality, I think anyone except for Cassandra and Vivienne could come back.

Strange. Her and Justice had a dialogue where she tells Justice that if she dies he is to stay away from her body. To which Justice says her concern is noted.
Personally, I think they should bring back Seranni and tie her in with the plot with the Grey Wardens at Weisshaupt and the remaining Disciples. If Velanna lived, they should tie her into that as well. Though, logically Velanna should be with the Hero, seeking a cure. That way Seranni can be saved.

Blackwall can, if you leave him to his fate in Orlais.

Why? She was a good nemesis, far, far better than Samson.
I loved the fact that you could reason with her.
I allied with Templars only on my third playthrough, so the game managed to impress me and suprise me at the third playthrough.
As to recurring companions, if we're going to Tevinter, I obviously want Dorian.
If Anderfels... Blackwall? But I think he can die (if you leave him to rot in prison). Unless the canonize him becoming a true Warden.

Actually it's easy for Blackwall always become warden.
If you left him someone conscript him.
If free go joins himself.
If forced I think Inquisition disband in DA4 so sent to wardens.

They probably won't bring Varric back as a companion :*(
They probably won't use a romancable character.
Vivienne could be the Divine so....
Cole?
I'd be okay with that. He seems to shed some light on what other companions are thinking and feeling.
I'm with everyone else here though, Scout Harding needs to be a companion if there is DA4
She's bad ass!

Why?
She has done countless terrible things and ruined and ended countless lives, so I don't want a companion slot taken up by that monster. The only way I want her to show up is if we make sure she faces justice for the atrocities she committed.

I would recommend against trying to talk about Calpernia with Hanako.
The Venatori (who Calpernia commands) did kill some Tranquil to create Shard-detecting skulls.
She attacked Haven, but the Inquisition is a military force, so it's hardly an 'atrocity'.
I cannot think of anything more she did, that was objectively wrong.
I can even argue, that murdering Tranquil is not evil, as they are not fully sentient (I don't really think so, but it's a matter of opinion, not an objective fact).
Samson is more of a monster, as he force fed Red Lyrium to prisoners, infected whole areas with it, and was one of the forces behind corrupting most of the Templars, which twisted many of them into monsters like Horrors and Behemoths.

Every single thing the Venatori did throughout the game. From making people slaves, to turning people into monstrosities via Red Lyrium, to murdering hundreds if not thousands of innocent people, to helping Corypheus try to destroy/conquer the world.

Cameo Appearances: Solas, Morrigan, Dorian/IronBull, Varric, and protagonist from DAO, DA2 and DAI.
Party Members: Zeveran, Dorian, IronBull, Blackwall, etc...
I have a gut feeling out of the ones listed, Dorian will be in the next day for the sole purpoe to expand on his true nature and players will get a more detailed story on him and his past, moreso than what we saw. We may even get a scene or two where he runs into old acquitences that he has once fancied at one time or another.
I personally would like to see the Elf back in action; this time no so easily romanced by either gender.
I hope they bring Varric along but mainly as the story teller and not a main NPC. That would be fine by me.
A new toon with a new adventure. Or maybe better yet. DA VI is a MMO...who knows what they plan to do.

I think DA4 could just focus on the inquisitor again, seeing how this game ends. Making possible for him to drink from the well would be quite useless, if they change character again.
So, i'd place my bet on returning Cassandra, Leliana, Cullen and Josephine. Maybe Leliana and Cullen as actual companions.
Other than that, if my suppositions are right, Hawke will probably return (or the warden, if he died). Probably Alistair would cammeo again (or Loghain, for that matters).
Seeing how things shifted towards elves, Merril will probably return, as well. And Morrigan is almost certain to return in my opinion. Solas will return 100% imho.

Not including Harding in Descent would have been odd since it was a DLC that centered around dwarves. She does talk to Cadash about Orzammar, but it's a dwarf-specific icon.
It's not like she adds anything just by being a dwarf. No, what's actually weird is that Dagna wasn't involved in the DLC whatsoever. You know, the person who is incredibly enthusiastic (not to mention helpful) when it comes to magic, lyrium, stone-sense, etc? Yeah. The fact that they didn't have Dagna even comment on anything that happened in the DLC but had Harding do a couple of lines is beyond ludicrous.
