None truthfully. Alot of these people can be dead. I believe everyone in Origins and DA2with the exception of Varric, Isabella,  and Aveline can be dead. Also with the varying states of some in DAI I just don't see it. I hope they start fresh and just leave all the old cast and such behind. A rule of thumb should be If they can be killed don't make big plans for them period. Especially with resurrection not suppose to be a thing in DAI.

I'm betting my money on Cole.

Are we talking a companion returning as a companion?  That's tricky.

If we're just talking characters and/or companions that are returning in prominent roles, perhaps as NPCs, I would imagine:

- Leliana without a doubt (I think someone in these threads has made the argument that all the Dragon Age games could essentially be compiled as Leliana's one long story, i.e. she's the protagonist, and if someone hasn't said that yet, I'm saying it lol)

- Cassandra (her role is so huge in Inquisition, esp. if you romance her, it's hard not to see her returning)

- Iron Bull for popularity's sake

- Dorian for the same, and because his character arc has a lot of potential in it.

My betting would be: Iron Bull, Dorian, or yeah, as above ^^^ Cole is a good guess, too.  Those three have a lot of potential for story arcs, for transitioning between games, and they are also very popular, too.

Cheers

I think we can probably rule out anyone who could possibly be dead - at least as more than a cameo. They had the whole 'the maker brought me back' thing with Leliana but i don't see them doing something like that again without a very big plot reason. Sadly this rule out Shale who would probably be my top choice if someone had to return.

That said, assuming the next full game will feature a new PC (and each game has so far), I'd actually rather a fresh roster of companions. Varric made sense for DA:I as a link to Cory and the events of DA2, Leliana and Cass kind of do the same. Obviously knowing nothing of the plot its impossible to say if any such bridge would be useful in the next game but I'd kind of like to meet a whole load of new people.

Am I the only one that wants Varric AND Cassandra to return, and become this series' Garrus and Tali?

If we follow statistics as a rule, they would have to be non romanceable (assuming DA:4 has a new protagonist, and I assume... or at least I hope so). I'm afraid this leaves us up with Cole (I don't like the fact that apparently I can't understand him completely if I haven't read the fracking books and... well, I have no intention of doing so). The other option would be Vivienne and I would adore to see her return, but she's Divine in my world state so that's definitely not going to happen. So Cole it is. :-/

Cole I feel they have written into a corner. because in a lot of games he has either become more spirit or more human. unless they retcon one or both of those choices I doubt it would be easy to write him into another game. I mean they could do something like

"Cole thought that he had become more human/spirit but soon came to realize that no matter what he did, He would always be a little bit of both. As he came to terms with this he began grow into his unique existence."

Does this really have an impact? Isn't it like the hardened / unhardened Leliana?

She becomes hardened eventually anyway from being the Left Hand of the Divine, for Cole its a matter of his existence. Is more human than spirit, or more spirit than human? Human Cole has difficulty making people forget but is able to learn from his actions, Spirit Cole slowly loses that human quality to his actions but is more certain of his own purpose and existence. That seems very different from a hardened/non-hardened choice.

But that doesn't changed the fact it was a choice that was ignored which is the point. just like they came up with a story reason to change a players choice they can do it for Cole. All it takes is a pen and there goes one decision out the window in favor of another

I think Solas will make cameos in the next games just as Flemeth did.  He'll be an interjection of "hmm let's move this chess piece here and coax the mortals along the path I want them to go."  I mean, after all, whether Solas stole Mythal or if Mythal stole Solas, Mythal is in there.

Yes, that's pretty much what I meant. It's a decision that has high philosophical value, but ultimately has little impact on his presence in a future game. Even if they decide to keep the player's choice, which of course would be good, it's manageable. This absolutely isn't the case with possible-Divine-Cassandra, for instance.

I can see Varric coming back, maybe not as a companion but as an informant instead. He gives you contacts, information and missions but he has a base of operations for himself (a new hanged man of sorts). You go see him this time, he doesn't work for you but wants to work with you ( an equal partnership like in DA2). I would think after Inquisition he'd be pretty much adventure'd out but I can still see him helping out the new protagonist.

At the moment he's the only companion I can think of from DAI that can't die, has to be recruited and doesn't have a story mission that can drastically change his personality or future. Varric's story in DAI (so far, DLC may change this) has been really blah compared to everyone else. Besides being annoyed with Bianca for messing him about again and introducing us to Hawke he was just kind of...there. Nothing spectacular happens with him, nothing really character changing, his role IMO was quite dull. I want him to have one more shot in the next game so he can end on a high.

Morrigan, Varric, Dorian, Human Cole, Harding, Blackguard, Iron Bull.

Solas, Cassandra, Leliana, Vivienne, Hawke, Stroud... I think they will never be a companion in DA4
