It might sound strange to some, but I actually like Udina more than I used to.
Basically all 3 games scream to you: "Just look at this a-hole! He's an annoying, power-hungry politician and you shall hate him, which is a good thing because he will turn out to be evil as well!"
While I'm just "meh" about it all. Sure, he has his douche-y moments (like grounding the normandy in me1), but nothing he does makes me really hate him (not even the cerberus coup, because it was so badly done, I guess). It seems to me he tries his best to have humanity gain more recognition from the other species. Even if it means kissing their asses from time to time. Subsequent playthroughs just made me realise more that he - as a person - is actually trying his best for humanity, but the game tries its best to portrait politicians as useless and ignorant fools (by ignoring the reaper threat etc.) and soldiers as the heroes who get **** done.
Sure, Udina's not one of my favorite characters and never will be, but he's interesting in a way and they could've done so much more to explain his actions in me3 other than "he's evil and was working with cerberus al along durr!" instead of showing his growing desperation to save his home planet and species, and frustration in losing his friends and colleagues when the reapers destroyed the Alliance parliament.
That's kinda what I meant in my post as well. Up until the coup, Udina is one of the more interesting characters. He is firmly pro-earth without being an anit-alien Cerberus fanatic. He knows how to play politics and he doesn't suck up to Shepard and Anderson like almost everyone else does.
Sure, he is a douche bag but you get his motivations and especially after the council meeting in the beginning of ME3, when you talk to him in his office, he and Shep can have a very nice conversation, basically, two guys who don't necessarily like each other but have a mutual respect and are linked by the horrors that befell humanity. That was a cool place to be in with him. Why oh why did he have to get shoved into the Cerberus/indoctrination corner?
Well, actually, we know why, it's because BW ran out of time and had to move the coup to an earlier point in the game. If the coup happened after Thessia, it could even have made sense from Udina's perspective. At least there would be a reason for him to loose it.
Also, why did he dye his hair black? He and Bailey look much better with grey hair
