Shouldn't we have to deal with the Dwarven Merchants Guild a lot more than we do?

According to Dragon Age 2's official guide, they are the ones who set up the goldarrow-10x10.png, silver, copper currency on the surface. According to The World of Thedas Volume 2, one of Bianca's inventions, the Davri Seed Drill, has become the standard in the Freearrow-10x10.png Marches, Antiva and Nevarra, according to Varric, they own all the taverns in Kirkwall's Hightown. I can't find anything right now that indicates they facilitate the lyrium trade between the Chantry and Orzammar but we know they deal in other markets such as trading other minerals mined from Orzammar, Anders statuettes and run various smuggling operations. They even have banking families.

So, the picture painted is that of a very wealthy organization who plays a role in much of the infrastructure of society. As such, one would expect they would have a hand in steering politics.

Despite this, they are barely mentioned in the franchisearrow-10x10.png, even when play the role of a leader.

There is never any indication they took a side in Ferelden's rebellion.

The Warden never has to deal with them to fund and raise his army despite the fact that, per lore, they control Orzammar's economy due to trade with the surface.

In her own mind, Celene never pondered how the Guild might affect her Empire or how she might use them against Gaspard.

And, despite the Inquisition becoming the rival of any nation in Thedas, we never even meet with a representative of the Guild.

I hope not. Well, not too much at least. Not a fan of surface dwarves. Too human. Varric's cool though... except he's a slacker in their guild anyways.

I'd rather get into detail of more human money transactions and criminals. About the best I got was Slim Couldry and the Coterie (maybe Isabela, if you count pirates).

Actually, JB, we do. It's not explicitly said, but the 'merchant' Josephine speaks with just before IYHSB, is most likely from the Guild, or the Carta, take your pick. Varric also keeps getting messages from them if you listen to some of the conversations Josephine has with her aide.

It makes sense she'd be the one to deal with this anyway.

There are also a couple of Guild dwarves at the Ball in Wicked Eyes. They're in the vestibule by the stairwells.

Also, what's with one race being so involved in this. It's like a Jewish stereotype. Seriously and honestly.

While traditional dwarves have many aspects in their society. They're a varied culture in themselves, like most fantasy..yet we've only had one game like that.

Assuming that merchant was from the Guild, the interaction that we see, at least, appears to be nothing more than a contract "We will buy lyrium from you" when you'd expect them to be trying to dictate the course of the Inquisition.

Considering the fact that the Guild pretty much controls, as I understand it, the dwarven end of the line in the lyrium trade, it's probable. The Carta has to have a "respectable" face to show to the surface after all. Geeze, it's the Dwarven Maffia, especially if Bianca's comments are correct.

I was just pointing out we do see them. It's just that the people who'd be dealing with them would be Threnn/Morris or Josephine, not the IQ. As for Celene, I'm not sure if either she or Gaspard would consider using the dwarves. They're useful but not human after all. That and I'm not sure the Guild would allow itself to be used like that, since supporting the loser would cause problems for business later.

And it may very well be Varric is using his influence to keep the Guild out of the Inquisition's hair at the beginning. And the Guild also has an interest in keeping things stable on the surface. Trying to dictate to the people who seem to have the best shot of stabilizing things so they can go back to business?
