It's not so much about the character, but the ability to play the game itself. I separate Roleplay and Gameplay as two things, and I don't want to be punished because the gameplay says 'oh, you have a low willpower stat? Well, then this ability takes affect and you panic'. I want control of the character to be placed firmly in the hands of the player, and not in numbers that determine everything. If I swing my sword, I want it to hit or miss based on my ability to actually swing and hit the opponent, gauging physical matters like distance, terrain and elevation difference, not on an accuracy percentage or critical hit chance et cetera. This is all still under the concept of the 'Action RPG' which I believe must have gameplay that rewards the player for their ability to actively execute abilities versus the traditional concept of the RPG/Action RPG, which have hit rate and evasiveness as numbers you can add little points into to make yourself better.

Gotcha. Withing the action-RPG concept, sure. This stuff's on a sliding scale.

Lets be honest, people buy Bethesda games for Player created content.  Hell the fan-base is better at patching there games than the company itself.

c.6-8% of Bethesda's fan base plays their games with mods (quote from Pete Hines, Marketing Head)

though console mods may change that figure.

More generally, Bethesda's silence up to 6 months before launch
(with the exception of the casting sheet leak) has been total genius.

  • Not least their E3 Showcase - a master class in how to do one.
  • The Fallout Shelter app to market the game topping the charts
  • The Pip Boy special edition creating a feeding frenzy.
  • Game sites falling over themselves to write Fallout stories about virtually nothing.
  • No complaints of downgrades or 'lies' in teasers as the game is just about done at reveal.

And all this with less than an hour of footage, and only around 80 days to launch.

Amusingly, the game section they now demo includes the section leaked in 2013.

Bethesda have a rule of 'One E3'. (again quoting Pete Hines)

"I jokingly have what I refer to as the rule of one E3, which isn’t really a joke. It has proven time and again to be a good rule. Any game should be at one and only one E3. More than that and you’re trying to talk about the game for too long. You’re trying to keep people’s attention for too long. It’s more time than you can maintain momentum, more time than you can fill with content. You’ll be sorry. In the case of Fallout 4, we felt the demand was so high that we’d be better served going shorter and having less time to fill, playing on the idea of immediacy."

MEA will have been teased, revealed and trailered at three E3s, over a 2 and half year reveal...

Personally I've been trying to avoid the MEA forum (darn)

because I can't cope with a year and a half of pained argument and analysis.

When MEA finally arrives I don't want to be sick of it already...

with Fallout 4 moving towards a voiced protagonist and greater defintion (presumably) I wonder if this will come with a renewed focus on story.

If so it'll be interesting to see how well they do it.  BioWare has already been bested once in terms of open world + story content by the Witcher 3, if FO4 also outdoes them I'll be curious to see what direction they go in next.

Unlikely. Even if it does have more focus on story, I personally doubt it'll be worth a crap. Bethesda simply doesn't have good writers. It'll be something "on surface" kinda neat, but full of contradictions to lore and more of a focus on "what's cool" rather than anything meaningful.

I guess I do somewhat commend them for at least appearing to step away from making Fallout Not-Elder Scrolls and more Not-Mass Effect.

Hell, the Brotherhood is there and they should REALLY be underpowered by now.

I do not. I roleplay combat. My character makes decisions in combat that I might not (else I would always play the same way, and that would be boring). I don't want to be punished because my character puts himself in situations where I lack the skills to succeed.

If lore contradictions and rule of cool is what makes a bad writer bioware is jam packed with them. Mass effect is set up to be like Michael bay movies.

Its more like Bioware should learn from Bungie and not make the same mistakes over and over again.
