Would be good if mages didn't have to run from enemies when they get too close, what happened to mages hitting up close with they're staffs like in DA2 ??

I take it you don't play as a Knight Enchanter?

I do but it would be better to be able to do a basic attack with a staff instead of just jumping forward and hitting with a magic sword

Yep. I liked the basic melee attack of mages in DA2, even as squishy as I was at times :P

My theory was that they couldn't figure out how to do (or didn't want to do) staff+sword melee animations for the KE, and it was easier to just cut melee from mages in general.

Yep. This is the Bioware way: Just cut it out from everything.

I mean the staff is quite a potent weapon, especially when you have staves that are made from tough materials. They would be shite against armor but against flesh, they should be excellent.

They could have simply used the sword only for KE. I mean, if I could make a blade of energy, I wouldn't hit people with my staff either.

It's quite curious (and disappointing) that they made a Staff Blade attachment yet scrapped staff melee applications.

This I agree. The only fight Miyamoto Musashi ever lost was against someone named Muso Gonnusuke, who was using a stick (jo).

You can. There are also some really good upgrades to make some staffs better for that type of thing. I play a rift mage most of the time and I mix it up. Sometimes I will be right in the action and sometimes I will be back. Vivienne is bad ass up close and is almost always right in the action.

Not only mages, but archer melee attack should make a comeback also. People like to hate on DA2 but I found that the combat had the right balance EAware was looking for (for console anyway). The only negative was the recycled environments.

The pace in DA2 was a bit too frantic. I know people said DAO was too slow, but going into hyperdrive wasn't necessarily better. Somewhere in the middle would be ideal, but I doubt they're going to back off the over-the-top route any time soon.
