Can you tell me(as a complete foreigner) what makes Chicago the land of awesome and Netherlands the breeding ground of boredom?

I'm from the country famous for producing musclebound actors / governors with thick accents and warmongers that try to build a 3rd Reich.
Home of the delicious croissant, the nation responsible for beating the Turks in 15th century, famous for its beautiful mountains and winter sports, known for its excellent skiers, castles and....tons of other stuff.

Oh, and the history of our flag is....bloody.
Legend says that back in ~1191 the nobles that heavily influenced the founding of what would later become Austria wore a white tunic over their armor when they fought in the crusades. After a battle during the siege of Akkon their tunic was completely soaked with the blood of their enemies, when they removed their sword belt only a small white line remained from their formerly white clothing, - according to legend, thats what inspired them in the creation of their new family banner.

I live in Naptown right now, though that's likely to change. I'm not really from anywhere though. I'm an American, and I consider California to be my home state, but I doubt that most people would consider me a true Californian.
I was a Navy brat growing up, and I'm in the Army myself. A combination of both has had me living (I define this as a place where I spent longer than 3 months) in more places than I can count: starting with U.S. states I've lived in or been stationed at - California, Arizona, Washington, Hawaii, Alaska, Illinois, Indiana (all of these during the Army and growing up as a brat), and Virginia (I lived here as a brat for a short period).
However, I've spent a majority of my life growing up abroad: other countries I've lived in, both as a brat and as a Soldier: Australia, Japan, England, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Russia, Brazil, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
I've traveled even more. Been to all 50 states, all 5 inhabited U.S. overseas territories (Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and Northern Marianas Islands), and 2 more territories that are uninhabited (Wake Island and Johnston Atoll). I couldn't even tell you all the countries I've been too.
I was born in California. I want to move to Australia within the next few years, while generally keeping myself travelling at all times. Marry me an Aussie girl is one of the life goals. By far my favorite place that I have lived.
I tell you folks, join the military if you want to see the world. It really does pay if you know how to play your cards. I'm only 25 after all. All Aussie people, expect a friend request.

Minnesota. That's the only logical conclusion.
Granted, I wouldn't exactly call Minnesota part of the Midwest... well, southern Minnesota is.

Chicago is quite amazing. I disagree about the Netherlands, though I think I could see the point behind it.
There's so much to do and see in Chicago, with a hugely lively people, and events that are always going on.

Indiana, United States. Luv it here.
Lived in Russia before that... But I won't post my opinion on that country, since I would likely be banned for it.
Wat?
I'm here too... This place...
****, I'd take Russia over the idiots here. Indy's great, the one bastion of sanity in a state that is otherwise best described as the middle finger of the south extending upwards into the Union.

Germany, northern part. In a city full of medieval buildings and medieval stories. Sorrounded by rivers and forrests. Cliché, i know. But i love it
This is making me dream!
Sorry to disappoint Brunette, but I'm not portuguese. But if I am not mistaken the part of France I'm from does share some cultural with Portugal (bullfightings, a culture stemming from horse-riding, etc.)

Well, I'm not comparing Indiana to other states: it is clear that there are much better places than this. But comparing to Russia, this is almost a heaven.
To be honest, I wanted to go for PhD in Australia, and the US was my second choice... But Aussies don't like funding us science dudes.
Then, I could choose between studying here, or in Cali or Florida (I was accepted in both too). Now, if I had to choose it again, I would probably go with Florida (Cali is too expensive to my taste), since the weather here in Indiana is killing me. But either way it is zillions times better than where I came from. Like I said, I don't want to say anything more about Russia, since I am a decent person and try not to curse too much.

They actually weren't bad at all this year. Granted, I don't work outside anymore so I don't get swarmed as often, but mosquito control does their job well.

When I stayed in the boonies of Minnesota, it wasn't just mosquitos. Fish flies and mayflies would swarm everywhere in these repuslive clouds that can turn white cars brown and they get in everything. They're indicative of a healthy ecosystem, so that's always nice, but screw those rotten bugs.Lots of water = lots of mosquitoes. No envy from me.

That sounds like hell because I have the unfortunate tendency to get airborne bugs in my mouth, eyes and nose. From your description I'd probably suffocate in a matter of minutes. Ugly.
Now I'm glad it hasn't rained here in 2 months.

Haha, yet another sucker succumbs to the ever fickle nature of Indiana. Where short-shorts and uggs are considered the fashionable winter wear, and a summer storm is followed by unbearable humidity for 2 weeks straight, followed by a 50 degree downturn.
If the weather sucks, give it a minute. If it doesn't suck, it will in a minute.

Only been through Brooklyn a couple times. Can't say it's a place I'd like to live, tbh.
Then again, I guess I could say the same for most of New York. Too crowded for my taste.
