That's a neat idea! The only problem I have with it is that it would take up one of the few DLC slots Inquisition will get, not that that's technically a problem with the idea :P I will say though, that I would have loved that to have been in the game at launch, and I would have probably liked it better than JoH and definitely better than Descent.

If it was in at launch, it would have been great to be able to follow up on an aspect of your story in the present, with your companions.

Damn skippy, it is! Perhaps they should hire me to write for their neglectful bums... ;p
If you ask me, it should have been at the VERY BEGINNING of the game - at launch. It frustrates me to no end. lol

I definitely agree. DA:O and DA2 also had elements of the intros that came back to resolve later, and it worked really well. It could be anything, but maybe something as simple as people mugging you, then meeting them again after you become the Inquisitor. See the terror in their eyes as you exact revenge! Or forgive them and have them learn something! Maybe they were just desperate and now you can give them a leg-up in exchange for serving in the Inquisition! It's up to you! I'm just thinking outloud... ^_^

Edit: And obviously that wouldn't be the entirety of the content, just a loose thread to resolve later :P

I'd go a bit farther than a mugging, but I'm kinda dark with stories and such. I'd strive to leave my companions speechless - put Blackwall's backstory to shame.
For a Dalish character (since elves are my favorite race) I've been thinking something along the lines of the clan being terrorized by either the Mages or Templars (the opposite of whichever faction you recruited/conscripted though Templars are more likely since they're Chantry-raised, prejudiced bullies) early in their stupid war. Perhaps it's revealed that our beloved elf was something of a ghost story - like killing any Mage/Templar that entered the area on sight and the area was thought to be haunted and therefore avoided by all humans. And since the Mage Templar War has been on for a few years, it's not impossible. The Keeper finds out and sends you to the Conclave to get you to let go of your hate. If you don't let go in the midst of all those Mages/Templars - you're sure to die.

After the telling, companions may comment on the tale individually - awkward conversation ensues with some. Lol Akward can be fun.

I'd like to see a playable backstory for the Inquisitor. Perhaps start as a conversation with someone, or all the companions and advisors hanging out at the tavern, just chillin and having a few brews. They share some short personal stories then insist you tell them about your life pre-conclave - after finally conceding (if you're hesitant to tell) the playable bit starts and you play the story that is your past while it's being told at the tavern or in the main hall of the keep.

I'd hate that. I don't want my character forced into having a specific backstory. I much prefer leaving it open so my character can be more my character than Bioware's character like they did with Hawke and Shepard.

Huh? Who said anything about making it specific or rigid? It'd be -your- backstory to play through. You'd have reactions to things and decisions to make. Who you would want your character to be would be reflected in your choices and reactions to situations or other characters.

No, you'd have a few reactions to things and decisions to make. They cannot accommodate the hundreds of scenarios that people can currently have, so most would be scrapped and only a few would remain if they did this.

What do you mean by "hundreds of scenarios"? If you look at the codex for an elven Inquisitor, It says something along the lines of "the Mage Templar War disrupted your clan's way of life so the Keeper sent you to the Conclave to see if the humans would get their crap together soon." That'd be the only set-in-stone part of the whole bit. You can choose to go on a killing spree, like I imagine many probably would (I certainly would), or perhaps you could choose to set up traps or noise-makers to frighten the idiots away instead. Maybe you simply stay on high alert, scouting the area almost constantly to give the clan a heads up to impending danger. Which you choose would affect what happens to the clan and surrounding area. Maybe they take their fighting closer to some village where a bunch of random people are attacked (you know, like what happened to the Hinterlands). Maybe a few members of your clan die off because you only scouted instead of scaring them away. There is a range of possibilities.

This is a valid concern for some players, but for me, I disagree entirely. If you want the freedom to create your protagonist more or less from whole cloth, then you should probably be playing a tabletop RPG. There really isn't a single thing that happens to your character over the course of the game that is your personal story, created by you, so why should the character's prologue be any different? BioWare games have almost always supplied at least some sort of introduction to your character's origin through in-game story elements. Hell--even Revan had a backstory, despite the fact that the Jedi had basically mind-wiped him and you got him with a clean slate.
