It is also how I managed to romance Morrigan though she hates kindness, flowers and puppies.
Female or Male Hawke?

Just tell me something... is it possible to do a friendship romance with Aggressive Hawke?
S/He is a real jerk, so that probably results in plenty of rivalry points.
If I play a male, it's gonna be rival!Merril. Isabela seems great, but I've already done the "cynical woman learns to love" shtick with Morrigan.
If I go with female, however... boy, that's gonna be tough. If you're going with a straight Hawke which is my intent, your options are the psycho mage and the bitter elf.
If male, I'm choosing sarcastic Hawke. As I said, he does a better job at delivering funny lines.
If female, then aggressive it is. She can be incredibly badass, if a little cold hearted.
Design wise, I'm not a big fan of default male Hawke. Those thin lips are weird as hell. Customizing would be a must. Default female Hawke is perfect the way she is, though.
Aggressive Hawke can definitely have friendship romances. Fenris reacts pretty well to aggressive Hawke (whether friend or rival), because he's rather blunt himself.
If you intend to rivalmance Merrill, it's also possible to pursue friendship with her for most of the game up until a particular turning point where it's possible for all that friendship to convert itself to rivalry. Dunno if you know the details or not, so I'm leaving it kind of vague. >_____>
Aggressive femHawke is great. Her voice is so full of disdain, like you're the scum on her shoe and she has exactly zero time for your ****.
Also, if you download the DLC then Sebastian is an option for straight female Hawke, in addition to Anders and Fenris. Again, depends what you're looking for.

Whenever I hear Nic Boulton, all I can think of is Vaughan Kendells. It kind of ruins it for me. I keep expecting Hawke to suddenly unleash a tirade of racist invective about elves at any moment.
...This is going to make it even harder to finish my snarky M!Hawke rogue playthrough, now that I know it's the same VA. Add that to the fact that he's romancing Fenris, and yeah. Weirdness.
But seriously, snarky F!Hawke is pretty good too.

If you play on PC, you can use mods and there are some fantastic appearance ones.
I usually play male, tho f!Hawke/Isabella is a thing of beauty. Mostly sarcastic, but aggro Hawke gets some amazing lines (red!hawke gets a bit on an unfair rep, tbh. There's some jerkish stuff, but purple!hawke can be equally an ass. Goes brilliantly with Carver). Any of the personality types can get you rivalry, depending on context, so don't rely on it to guide you.
Do you have any of the DLC?? Sebastian is an f!hawke romance, and he's pretty interesting. Opens up a lot more background banter and theres some good stuff in there

If it helps, Nick Boulton also voices a couple of other characters in Origins. One of them is that sexy templar in Lothering you speak to in the Chantry. Ser Bryant? Name starts with a "B" anyway. Been a couple years since I played. He also voices the peasant outside the inn who cheers you for driving away/killing the bandits on the road. I even saw a mod that replaced him with the appearance of default M!Hawke.

I preferred male Hawke. But that's because FemHawke's voice wasn't for me.
Snarky male mage Hawke all day every day.

That sounds right. And it may be why I don't associate him particularly with Vaughn Kendells. (On the other hand, I've also never played an aggressive M!Hawke, which would be much closer to Vaughn's character and tone anyway.)

Funny, because Boulton's Vaughn always struck me as "muah ha HA" butt-clenchingly evil, whilst aggro Hawke sort of... verbally punches people in the throat. While glaring at puppies.
I definitely think male Hawke's tone in general reflects Ser Bryant, though. Probably 'cause they both sound so put-upon.

Can't stop laughing at the first part of that post! I now need to try an aggro!Hawke playthrough.
That last part is probably why I can play any kind of a male Hawke. Both he and Ser Bryant are very put-upon. Vaughn Kendells, on the other hand, has yet to survive any of my Origins playthroughs, racist excuse for an overgrown spoiled brat that he is.

Not only does Hawke always pull out a dagger during cutscenes which is very immersion breaking, but s/he also seems to act like a mercenary.

I love FemHawke, but I love both really. I really enjoy the dynamic between female rogue Hawke and Bethany and male mage Hawke with Carver. I lean on the former more though.
yeah I agree I like both Hawkes too. Although I have played more Femhawkes than male ones of late. My next one will be female as well. Of the 2 siblings I prefer Bethany over Carver too. Haven't seen Carver much lately as most of my Hawkes have been warriors or rogues lately. On one hand I don't mind it as I'm not that fond of Carver but then again I sometimes miss being a mage in DA2. I probably will play a mage again at some stage but my next run wil be a female sword and shield warrior. At least that's what I've got planned

I've realized just how rogue oriented the Aggressive personality is.
Not only does Hawke always pull out a dagger during cutscenes which is very immersion breaking, but s/he also seems to act like a mercenary.
That's one of the things I found least immersion breaking. Given that regardless of class, Hawke does spend a year getting up to all kinds of dodgy stuff, I though it felt pretty fitting (at least more than chucking fire around in front of everybody)

I'd imagined that the codex for rogue Hawke would say that s/he was responsible for putting food on the table -by means necessary-.
Instead, we are told that s/he was in the army just like Carver. The ****? Do you ever see any soldiers dual wielding daggers? No, you don't.

They didn't go that deep in class specific origins. Even in the other games, the warrior and rogue get lumped together (and the human origins are nobility). Which I don't mind so much, it's easy enough to head canon around it.
What I mean is that even mage Hawke spends a year with either smugglers or mercenaries and lives in the Lowtown slums. Even if they didn't know how to use a knife before that, it wasn't that much of a stretch for me to imagine they would have picked up a few skills. Especially a red!Hawke (and personally it was less immersion breaking than casting around guards and templars. Or using magic to threaten someone who might sell you out later on).

Not half as immersion-breaking as my mage (Shapeshifter/Spirit Healer) Warden grabbing a 2h sword after the duel in the Landsmeet in Origins.
But, as others have pointed out, all three classes have cutscenes with knives. My purple mage!Hawke pulled a knife to execute Kelder in my current playthrough, just as an example.

Male Hawke. I once tried Fem!Hawke, had to stop before I even got out of Lothering; it really didn't work for me. I might give it another chance at some point, but not any time soon.

That one is easy, would you rather play as Vaughan or as Ciri?
Take your pick
So the child of destiny? Or a creepy rapist son of a Arl? Wow, way to make the choice easy ![]()

I wish the female voice were more like Isabela's or Aveline's.
I'm not fond of that princess kinda voice like hers or the British VA from Inquisition. I need it to sound stronger.

Default male mage and sarcastic rogue females for me. Kind of like Diplo mage Hawke too... it's a bit like taking over Bethany's role. It's the only kind of Diplo character I like.
