As with Shepard I play both ways although lately I've played more female Hawkes than male though

I wish the female voice were more like Isabela's or Aveline's.

I'm not fond of that princess kinda voice like hers or the British VA from Inquisition. I need it to sound stronger.

Can't say I minded the VA in Inquisition, in all honesty, but I agree. Maybe a voice like Jeniffer Hale's could have worked, too. :)

Very unusually for me, I've played through three times with an m!Hawke (well, one isn't quite finished, I didn't play for a while and decided to start a new playthrough, though I'll finish it eventually) and am only now on my first fem!Hawke to make it past the prologue. I hardly ever play as men if I don't have to, but I really like the voice acting for Garrett (or Rupert as my first Hawke was called). Marian (Beryl) is good, but I don't love her acting as much. I was planning to romance Isabela, because I like being able to play a non-het (my male Hawkes have been exclusively gay) but I kept noticing that Hawke and Fenris were standing close together, their hands touching, so I went with that, but then after the romance scene, she found solace in a tumble with Isabela... And then Anders swooped in! Apparently he's her official romance, but Fenris and Isabela both still have "tokens". (I wish there was a poly mod like for Origins, but alas..) Sort, this went a but off topic, but the romances are abb integral part of Hawke's story, and even though they're all available to either gender, I do think certain of them work better for a given gender/class of Hawke (I can't see myself playing a Hawke who romances Merrill, tbh, but if I do, it will definitely be fem!Hawke)
.)

I like female Hawke in sarcastic mode. I haven't tried playing male Hawke yet, but will be trying that one soon.

Yeah I tend to play a mix of diplomatic and sarcastic. Works well and is really funny sometimes

I usually play female characters, and DA2 was no exception. Female Hawke's voice actress also does the female Imperial Agent in The Old Republic, and I was satisfied with both performances.

yeah all my quizzy's except one so far have been female. Ijust think that's moer down to the fact I felt Alix did an amazing job as the Inquisitor as much as anything though. As they all  pretty much have had her voice so far

The first time I started DAII I couldn't imagine doing a male Hawke mage because a ST 10 didn't work with that body.  But the second time (I played a mage) I was starting with the Blood Dragon armour available so I bought up my strength and constitution enough to wear it and was satisfied to have the burliest mage who ever walked the face of the Earth.

Male. Snarky mage is my first choice but I really liked my aggressive warrior as well.

I enjoy the voice work more, really liked the deadpan delivery of the sarcastic dialogue.... and call me a petty little immersion nerd but one other reason why all my Hawkes ended up being males is because I couldn't take the female animations seriously. No matter how I want to roleplay, all f!Hawkes prance around with such an aggressive hip swing that it looked like the butt was trying to escape the rest of the body XD. Though I admit that the male mage's steroid pumped arm looks ridiculous too.

Aaanyhow... male it is for me.

It depends on what you're looking for.

BioWare's "canon" is a male mage.  Granted, that's just a fancy way saying what the "default" is, kind of how the "canon" Shepard is a male soldier, earthborn, sole survivor, but that in no way limits or detracts other "Shepards".

It gives players who want to just jump right in without worrying about customization.

I personally prefer Male Hawke, mainly Diplomatic with a smattering of Humorous here and there, such as the purple "diamond" icons, unless there's the blue "angel wings and halo", then I always pick that.

That aside, you seem to know what you want, so given what you said...

If you want "the look", then go with Female Hawke.

If you want to enjoy "the talk", then go with Male Hawke.

For me, the voice acting sealed it. I had to play a male Hawke. Jo Wyatt did a great job and I don't dislike her voice, but I really, really loved Nick Boulton's delivery. No matter which personality you picked, he nailed it. This is just my opinion, naturally. Lots of people feel exactly the opposite way about it, and they aren't wrong. You're going to have to go with your own instincts on that one.
