A simple question about these DLC's, what level should I be in order to play them?
Assuming they have fixed level enemies in them as the other areas have.

For JOH, you should be at least level 23 depending on the difficulty you play on. There's a Fade Rift there which spits out three level 26 Pride Demons. The Descent however, can by played at what ever level you wish once you reach Skyhold, since the enemies level with you.
There is also a pack of lvl 30 demons that are unrelated to a rift - so beware. (JOH)

Luckily for me only Dorian went down.....Cole and Bull were fine. In fact, Cole fared better than Bull lol. If you build Cold right.....that little guy is a beast in battle. Love him....Haha.

My recommendations for JoH.
Casual = 16-17
Normal = 17-18
Hard = 20-21
Nightmare 23+
Decsent doesn't really matter, it scales to your level.
And with both, get as updated gear as possible before you go, mediocre gear will make both of these DLC harder than they need be.

I started Hakkon at 23 and found it a challenge. Leveled all the way to 27 while playing it. BIG xp available. As a level 27, The Descent was a challenge as well. Had several battles where multiple party members were killed, and I barely got through.

I would definitely agree with gearing up first. I've been out of the game for a while, and downloading the Black Emporium and buying some of their stuff before reattempting that stupidly long fight in The Descent helped with my damage output. I have Jaws of Hakkon but found some parts to be a little tough at level 20, so I'm going to try to level up more before I go back.

Jaws of Hakkon enemies are always at my level exactly. I am curious as to why some people are experiencing level 30 demons? That sounds really terrible.
I was really impressed with how well the enemies level scaled everytime I leveled up and it made level progression very smooth.
As for Descent, apparently it auto levels from 12 and up. I feel like gear is more important then level though (and specializations are a must). I wouldn't go into that dlc without level 3 crafted weapons and armor (with level 3 or even 4 materials). It's easier to excuse using level 4 materials if you have them now since Descent sells so many dragon parts. I think next time I play it I'll wait till after I get the Jaws of Hakkon Armor to see if it might help with killing things even marginally faster.
Too much HP!

The level 30 Demons is a specific group on that island you go to. The other Demons are usually around 20-23. Yeah, I don't want to spoil anything in this thread, but those specific demons are rough. Tore apart my level 27 party on every attempt on default difficulty.

I was level 18 on Normal with some tier 4 weapons and armour on my party..... was doing really well and loving the challenge of the gameplay... then i found those 3 pride demons.... i was not amused.... my party was wiped out except for my Inquisitor. I kept trying to run, but there were spiders and Hakkonites everywhere!!!! I had only 200 hp by the time i was able to fast travel and run away....
I think I'll come back in a few levels...Maybe do Descent for the first time?

That's pretty much what happened to me when I found that Rift with the Pride Demons at level 23....they completely destroyed my party, which rather embarrassing because I only play on casual difficulty.I was level 18 on Normal with some tier 4 weapons and armour on my party..... was doing really well and loving the challenge of the gameplay... then i found those 3 pride demons.... i was not amused.... my party was wiped out except for my Inquisitor. I had a similar party when I stumbled on the despair demons, though I was at level 27 when I started JoH: my knight enchanter, Cassandra (2h), Blackwall (w&s), and Dorian (lots of fire). It was just dumb luck that I had a good group for one of the hardest fights in the game. Dorian and Cassandra went down a couple of times but I managed to get them to revive each other so they were all standing when it was over. I was just stunned afterward. It felt like I was fighting them for hours, but I'm sure I don't remember lol. Those stupid bastards jump all over the place...

Just do everything before Trespasser as you can't play after that DLC is done.
That frost giant or whatever it was massacred me my first play of JoH.

I honestly don't think Jaws of Hakkon matters if you play on Nightmare, like me. Even at 27 the enemies can one-hit kill you even if you have full guard, full barrier, and full health. JoH is all about rooting and nuking. That's it. A lot of rinse and repeat in this DLC.
This means you have to spec your characters to do high damage, and arrange your party to keep enemies frozen/asleep/knocked down/paralyzed/etc.
And the second to last boss battle is just cheap. You need a specific strategy to win it. The final boss is cheap too, come to think of it. Had to nuke Hakkon with Sera + Offense Tonic + 1000 Cuts + Cassandra's Horn of Valor, and also "Insane Sera" with Berserk Iron Bull + Offense Tonic, all while my mage held the thing down with Mark of the Rift and Static Cage.
