Heya,

After years i finally want to 2 expansion packs but i cannot even touch the game since it looks like it was made 30 years ago, the square graphics really put me off.

I cannot even imagine how BW, could make Kotor which looked far better that this and it was only like one year later.

NWN 2 compared to that looks like a game made in different lifetime and century.

So is there a way to make this game looks good to the extend of me touching it.

Would be thankful for any info.

Cheers,

Sew

I don't think that nwn looks so horrible, much depends on the server.

For example: http://neverwinterva...-pw-server-haks(and creatures are better too)

Anyway, the customizable core it's really powerful, how many games can offer the same?

Anyway 2.0: looks this post http://forum.bioware...roved-graphics/:)

Relax and enjoy retro graphics

Or yeah, grab some custom content and go nuts

I actually prefer NWN toons/creatures to NWN2 - they may be more chunky and more poorly textured (both things quite updatable), but the overall shape and movement feels more natural/less awkward.

I won't even go into the geography/environments, since many of the custom tilesets and objects created simply make it a totally different game in this respect and the toolset a pure joy to build with (and RP in later).

Maybe it's the old person in me that makes me feel this way, but I hate when people complain about the graphics of old games. Seriously. I feel like it is just twisting the knife in the side of the people who worked hard on this game back in the late 90's and early 2000's. You know, back in that time before smart phones when this was the most popular cell phone on the market when I was just entering college. That's right kiddies... fear the monochrome madness. I remember burning days playing games on that screen. DAYS! I had more fun playing snakes on that phone than I ever did playing Skyrim.

NWN was never very appealing to look at. Even in 2002 it wasn't the best looking game on the market. It wasn't the worst, but it wasn't near the best either. But that's not what NWN was about. It was about player control. Modules. Persistent Worlds. Being able to be expanded on unlike any other game at that time, and since. The few projects I've seen out there trying to be NWN-like are failing to live up AFAIK. Custom Content has this game very far.

Personally I hate the way graphics are becoming the most important part of a video game product. It makes teams grow into MASSIVE sizes, and takes up SOOOO much development time just getting the graphics to look so bloody amazing that squirrels run into your TV, that content takes a back seat. You see it in recent RPG's all the time. Less options, more linear, choices matter less. I hope they stop trying to make games so pretty and start making better games!

Wizardry anyone?  How about nethack? It's not the graphics and eye candy that makes a game good.

Sew,

I think you're complaining to the wrong audience here. :P NWN is never going to compete with Skyrim graphically, if only because of the inherent limitations of the game engine. That being said there are certain NWN tilesets and other mods available from the new Vault that are decently attractive, and the available mods do allow exploration of unique genres such as Spelljammer that are not available elsewhere.

Edit: I just discovered nethack is still being developed and played.  Cool!

*sniffs the air* Yup, Troll.

Its really bad form to come into a forum dedicated to NWN and bash it with a big club as your introduction to this Community. Much better to ask what graphics enhancements are available and keep it to that.

P.S. NWN is not "square." Minecraft - *cringes* - is square.

Exactly! Despite scoffing at it when my son started playing, I soon found myself pounding away at those little blocks with my pickax, totally engrossed in a game so simplistic its devilishly addicting.

Something I've been hitting with bricks rather heavily these last few years, NWN graphics... so I can't help but toss my own spectacularly futile and uninteresting observations into a more or less pointless discussion since the subject comes down to individual perceptions of what may or may not look crap... rendering a consensus on the issue highly improbable.

Blatantly, NWN is not photo-realistic and it never will be. To try to make it utterly realistic is an exercise in ultimate futility and, despite being engaged in ultimate futility far more frequently than is healthy for me, that's not a waste of time I'm going to bother with. (Please don't think I'm getting at CC creators trying for a more realistic, detailed look - more realistic than vanilla NWN would be hard not to do.

Better textures, nicer, higher poly models, more types of trees, ground that isn't utterly flat, etc, all more than worthwhile... But an effort to make NWN totally realistic? No chance, so there's no point bothering. Game engine just isn't up to it.

But as has been pointed out, NWN has SO many other things going for it. There is no other platform I know of that allows you to "make your own video games" in this way, certainly not anything like as efficient and effective. (Though I do still struggle with Electron every now and then, but it's so slow and involved to work with by comparison).

That's why in creating all my CC, (just look at Kali, the Aliens, etc, etc,) I try to make something that's got a reasonable glimmer of realism and solidity about it but also has an edge of over-the-top comic strip vibrancy... NWN isn't real, so I try to play up to such strengths the graphics have and create worlds that are quite stylized but form a homogenous whole - creatures, environments, etc all forming a cohesive in-game world untroubled by intrusion from graphical elements of either vastly higher or lower standards.

After all, I've been drawing and writing Demoness Tales for 25 years on paper - that's not photo-real either. It's a caricature of reality. NWN is also, in essence, a caricature of reality which I've hammered with a big brick until it's the specific caricature I want.

So to me it seems if you want to ignore the storyline and instead just criticize a game's graphics for not looking real, you might just as well criticize comic strip art for not looking real and not bother actually reading the story... You'd have to dismiss half the art ever created in fact, for not looking real...

OK, I admit it. NWN wasn't a great game. It was enjoyable enough, but I never found it very involving, never really clicked with the characters. (NWN2 was infinitely better in terms of its actual game, story and characters). But the point of NWN, a point so open to being honed to individual tastes, is the Toolset.

It's all about creating wild and wonderful characters and stories, intricate and amusing dialogue, atmospheric worlds... rather than throwing myself to the ground in despair because a Demoness' horns clipped through a doorframe without splintering it in a realistic way... or that the Spleen creature's hide looks a tad pixilated round its armpits...

Aurora is the core of NWN - it's for the imaginative and the creative, not for the technologically fussy.

For anyone who won't play a game that doesn't have graphics so intensely real they lean out of the screen and punch you on the nose, then why even go near a game more than ten years old?

Look, I am no racist, but I agree with the opening poster's feelings, if not their tactful approach. Neverwinter does look quite dated and lacking compared to modern standards; but what would you expect from a game more than a decade old? You don't play the original Super Mario Bross and go: Man, this sucks! You can't even tell if this guy has a mustache or a cancerous mole! Where is my pressure-sensitive joystick?

Thing is, unlike many other games of old, Neverwinter Nights CAN be, and HAS been modded to try and upgrade it's visuals. People keep debating whether it can reach modern standards or not, but whatever side you may land on, one thing is certain: You want this game to look top notch? You better be willing to work hard, son, cause it is a very involved endeavor, and how much time and skill and labor you invest in it will determine the results.

Sorry, I have to quote my other post. I think that NWN can be good also today, Sure, it's impossible compare it to The Witcher 3 or latest games, but - for me - it's still beautiful (especially for the possibility to create your concept of beauty by modding). :)

Me myself spend hours with Prison Architect, and it could be a late Amiga game looking at the graphic. :)

@Lastbard: Awesome screenshots, never seen that tileset before.

I know we are all different. I myself love games that look more cartoony vs realism. I for one can’t stand a game that is trying to look photo real looking.

For example I liked EverQuest1 but could not stand the looks of EverQuest2. I even like the looks of NWN1 vs NWN2, because there is just something about NWN2 that bugs me. I don't know for sure but maybe I just like tile based games more. Maybe its because I’m older and started playing games in the 80s with games like Frogger for the Atari and Oregon Trail DOS game for the PC. I don’t know hundred percent why I don’t like the looks of realism looking games I just can’t stand the way they look. Most of the time I will not even try to play a game if it is going for the photo realism look.  To me NWN1 looks better than those kinds of games.

I am not trolling.

For me this game looks just horrible.

I feel the same way about soul reaver, cannot touch it.

I am not asking for it to look like skyrim, since skyrim looks bad in many places too.

For example DAO in many places looks good to this day, and when i started it, i never said this game looks bad.

Look at this mod for nwn2 http://www.nexusmods...nter2/mods/212/. It really feels good while playing official campaign of nwn 2.

So if i do not agree with you, i am a troll ? " Only sith deals in absolutes".

In the past i tried playing older games like civ or civ 2, but because of low textures i cannot stand them.

Tried morrowind but i had to install hd texture pack.

Isn't there a single texture pack, that i can install ?

I already found that thread when using "uncle" google but i was hoping for some uber secret that google didn't found :P.

My first game i played was Civilisation in the beginning of the 90's. I remember nearly every detail about it, i even memorise all of civipedia from it, every unit, every technology.
