I'm still concerned with my reaver playthrough but I can't wait to try another character. I've created a human dual-wielding artificer rogue which will (most likely) romance Cassandra - in this case my Inquisitor will have a religious disposition. She'll be the tank in the party. But I can't decide which other two companions to take along.

My thoughts so far:

  • Blackwall: I'd love to use him but then I'd have two warriors and three chars in melee range. But I want as few character as possible at the front line so they won't block each other. And he seems pretty boring story-wise.
  • Cole: Could be interesting but as a religious Inquisitor I wouldn't recruit him. Or should I even though Cassandra disapproves?
  • Dorian: Probably one of the more interesting choices but I already use him in my other playthrough. This might become a little repetitive.
  • Iron Bull: No.
  • Sera: Great gameplay-wise, lore-wise not so much.
  • Solas: Took him along in two playthroughs. I have little interest in doing this a third time.
  • Varric: The banter between him and Cassandra could be hilarious. And having two artificer in a party sounds very interesting, too.
  • Vivienne: It seems she'd fit perfectly in this party and since I don't like her in general I never took her along. This might be the chance to get to know her better.

What do you think?

I'm thinking... mages. Vivienne and Solas. They and Cass all have good banter among each other.

Blackwall as S&S along with Cassandra works well. I have used that combo a lot in my mage playthrough. They basically can split the enemies among each other and pass them off to each other when needed. Even with the same four primary S&S abilities, they can be different. I gave Cass the abilities like the chain move, or the roll, and later the War Horn. While Blackwall had War Cry, Charge, and later some moves from his specialization. I also gave Blackwall some 2H and switched between the two styles depending on the situation.

If you don't want Solas in the party, then use Vivienne. Or take Viv and Dorian.

What do you mean by "religious disposition"? The shallow stereptype of the assh*le zealot, or a more contemplative believer who knows that politics and biases have had an unfortunate impact on the faith, or someone who just kind of needs to believe in something so the world feels less scary? I had a lot of fun with the second kind -- my human warrior ended up being closest to Cassandra and Cole, who also form a genuine friendship with each other despite the rocky start. If you're not sure about Cole, doing Champions of the Just introduces him so well and in such contrast to a demon that it can help to dispel some initial suspicion and maybe make the Herald feel a little "indebted" to him (though he'd likely never want that), enough to let him stay. Also, Andrastianism may feel superior to the "first children of the Maker" because they lack the creative spark, but it does not condemn them all as evil and untrustworthy like for example the Dalish do. Spirit healers are a rare but respected tradition in the Circles.

So Cass and Cole actually get along great after a while and are a very enjoyable combo. Having three melee characters can be annoying at times, but it's perfectly doable. As for the third companion, Vivienne would not mix well with Cole. I don't like her either, never used her, and despite the fact that she can hijack the Divine election there's nothing noticeably devout about her so she is not an obvious choice for a faithful Inquisitor. If you do want to use her, I'd say pick Varric for the last slot if you want a party without constant sniping. If you want to use Cassandra and Cole, the best fit for #3 is Solas (go, Team Mutually Respectful Moral and Theological Debate!) but you said you don't want to bring him again. Dorian gets along with Cass and works well with Cole, too. Blackwall is fun with both Cassandra and Cole, if you want to be daring and run a mage-free double-tank double-melee-rogue experiment. :P
