This is inspired by a similar topic on NeoGAF, on the best and worst incarnations of famous video game characters. Several Dragon Age characters have appeared in multiple games (and other media), often with different appearances and even different personalities due to changes in art style, costuming, writing, or characterization. Examples include Alistair, Cullen, Leliana, and Flemeth (appearing in all three DA games), Isabella, Hawke, Morrigan, Anders, Varric, etc. and more minor characters like Sandal. Sometimes even entire races (like the Qunari and Elves) are different in how they are depicted across games.

Of their multiple appearances, in your opinion which do you consider to be the "best" and "worst" versions of the Dragon Age characters? It could be based simply on their visual appearance and dress, or also include their personalities or the way they were written or portrayed.

Starting with the first two I mentioned - based on appearance and visual depiction alone:

Best: Alistair in DA:O, Cullen in DA:I

"Okay": Alistair in DA:I, Cullen in DA:O

Worst: Alistair in DA:2, Cullen in DA:2

Based on visual depiction alone,

Cullen: DA:I > II > DA:O

Leliana:

Best in DA:I

Spoiler

Her DA:O and DA2 appearances for me are a tie at 'decent'.

Spoiler

I like Leli's Sacred Ashes trailer appearance as well but prefer her in-game look, it's more fitting of the setting (personal opinion). I don't like Leli's hairstyle in her Origins DLC, much prefer the bob or whatever you call it.

Zevran:

Best in DA:O

Spoiler

Worst in DA2

I think they captured Alistair's appearance well in DA:I, but I miss his spiked hair :( :P So I'd agree that DA:O Alistair is the best, and DA:I Cullen.

I'm not a huge fan of how they made Morrigan look fairly different, but she is still recognizable as Morrigan at least, so it's not bad.

Leliana looks about the same to me.

Varric looks better in DA:I. I like Cassandra's braid in DA:I more than her hair in DA2.

Flemeth's DA2/DA:I look is awesome!

Anora's DA:I look is really disappointing, considering her iconic hairstyle is in the game, but not used on her (it's used on Calpernia).

Stroud and his mustache look better in DA:I.

I liked Loghain's DA:O appearance better (mainly because he wasn't forced to use one of the lame DA:I hairs).

I didn't like what they did to elves in DA2 at all!

That's all I can think of at the moment.

After DA2 I was scared for poor Alistair...and then he appeared in DAI...He looked so good there , I just feel like I could sell my first born for a Frostbite Enhanced DAO version.

Leliana my favorite is from DAO , in DAI she just doesn't look her age , and something about her face is just off , I headcanon she had a bad magical lifting or too much botox.

Morrigan also looks plain as hell in DAI and not her age .I prefer the "Sacred Ashes " version. She has a big chin and just looked wicked.

Isabela I liked her better in DA2 , she 's not great in DAO , and in DAI mutliplayer she got green/blue eyes. And it's one of my problem with DAI , you can't make brown eyes at all for some unknown reason.

I know I've tried .

I prefer DA2 Cullen by far , he was cute ...in DAI he looks like generic blonde guy a bit tired and with a couple of scars (beats Morrigan and Leliana botox stuff for sure) .He also play the generic good army general with some hidden scars ...The level of boring is too damn high for me.

Also he's got a turned up nose , I'm not really fond of those.

Cassandra looks generic in DA2 , she looks like a couple of npcs , so anything else is better. But anyway I think she looks really pretty in DAI....with her sharp features she doesn't suffer the baby face syndrome.

Varric is fine in DA2/DAI.Flemeth looks great in DAI .

These ones are closer calls for me:

Anders (DA:O) > Anders (DA2)

avatar_5e7c80bdd24e_128.pngavatar_f2991cc4bbd6_128.png

Anders in DA:O kind of struck me as "Alistair with a ponytail and magic", both looks-wise and personality-wise. Anders in DA2 didn't really benefit from the graphical / art-style change (he seems to have lost his chin), and personality-wise... well, we all know what happened to his personality, though I know some people appreciate him having more depth. Personally I still prefer the Anders in Awakening, even if he does come off sometimes like an alternate costume for Alistair.

Isabella (DA2) > Isabella (DA:O), Flemeth (DA2/DA:I) > Flemeth (DA:O)

Spoiler

I think there were aspects of both Flemeth's and Isabela's redesigns that were controversial, and I'm not a fan of some aspects of them (especially with regards to their costuming), but at least they gained unique appearances that distinguished them rather than looking like generic NPC models. Personality-wise, Isabela was obviously given more to do in DA2 than in Origins; for Flemeth I think her character suffered in DA2 from not being able to play off Morrigan.

I wasn't a big fan of Alistair's re-design for Inquisition, but I at least wish they could've given Warden Alistair (and Loghain for that matter!) better armor; why not his starting Splintmail from Origins? Half the images online of him he's wearing that armor (and Loghain could have his River Dane Set, but the Devs seem to not like plate armor now).

Leliana's lips were totally different in DA:I, and the shape of her face was wrong. All I can say is she had major work done by the face- shifter in Riften (don't know how she got to Tamriel but...).

Alistair is absolutely the cutest in DA:O, and I miss his hair.

I actually liked Cullen's look better in DA:2, but I was on console and he didn't look much like picture I saw posted above.

Morrigan looked about the same.

Someone once posted that Anders looked like a rat in DA:II.  I couldn't unsee that once I saw the point the poster was making.  But, yes, he looked entirely too much like Alistair in Awakenings.

Nathaniel looked better in DA:II, he looked as though he'd matured from the 20 something guy we met in Awakenings to the 30 something year-old-man he probably was.

Morrigan's equally good in both DA:O/I.

Morrigan.gif

leliana in DA:I missed a lot of her original features, IMO she's better in origins.

Isabella talk about huge improvement, she turned 180 degree.

Alistair in DA:O is the best, and he was a lot better in DA:I compared to DA2.

I actually liked Queen Anora in DAO better, since her iconic Leia-like hairstyle was stolen by Calpernia.

Spoiler

Connor was cute as a child, would have expected him to be a handsome young man, but he wasn't.

Queen Anora aged quite bad imo, she had a flirty innocence to her in Origins, it was not hard to believe that Cailan was easily manipulated by her... But in Inquisition she kinda turned into queen mother LoL and not in a good dignified way, but in a seriously bad and plain way.

On the other side, her father really aged well. (In Xbox 360 he actually seemed to be younger thanks to the horrible lack of textures) but overall he passed from ghoulish badass to hardened badass in those ten years.

Nathaniel Howe in DA2 was an improvement from Awakening, I think.

DA2 Merrill and Keeper Marethari were much better than their DAO versions.

I think that the default Hawke's looked better in DA2.

Male Hawke was always scruffy, but it was in a ruggedly handsome way. Inquisition however seemed to turn the scruffy slider to maximum, so he came off looking more looking less rugged and more like a hobo or a mountain man... although, I guess that makes sense since Hawke was homeless after fleeing Kirkwall.

Female Hawke was given awful hair and even if you decided to switch over to the messy hairstyle that m!Hawke has (i.e. the one that should have been the preset), it didn't look that much better. To be honest, take away the blood smear and the Champion armour and I've have been hard pressed to tell you that this woman was Hawke, since her face was a lot rounder and her blue eyes weren't nearly as vividly bright.

Connor may be meh-guy (and cute child =/= handsome adult) but you can see he is the same person, it's kind of cool actually.

[snipped wise words]

I can't agree more :(
I didn't manage to reproduce my Hawke, not my default one nor my custom one... That female hair, UGH.
The lightening in the Hawke customization is, for some reason, different from the CC in the beginning/at Black Emporium, and I didn't even see the horror I created until the cutscene it self (with my favorite world state & favorite Hawke (custom) I literally reloaded 7 times, I wasn't satisfied no matter how much I worked on her, at the end I just gave up and tried not to look at her, I'm not sure why but it's really immersion breaking).

That would imply that anyone can actually remake their hawke.
I just gave up on ever remaking him and just barfed out some slider choices.
Not that it matters I suppose I kill him in my canon :D

Women were beautiful in DA:II. In DA:Inquisition they were often hags. Thank God they finally gave us the mirror of transformation so that you didn't have to re-roll the character over and over again.

I know what you mean. I had that problem with my Inquisitors as well. I'd get halfway to the Temple and think, "I cannot look at that face for the next 80 game hours."  I'd delete and start over and over again. Bioware's best faces and hair were in DA:II (and that's not saying much for the hair) I don't know the programming limitations, but if they can give Morrigan great hair, why can't we have some? (Yes, I will keep asking this question of Bioware until the series ends or I die, whichever first occurs.)

Everyone was at their worst in DA:O, the land of melting wax people.

DA2 vs DA:I is a mixed bag from character to character.

Wut?

DA2's character models were basically ripped straight from some Faces of Meth posters.
tumblr_m5dfflHK7k1qjfxmno1_1280.jpg

DA:I largely had fine looking characters. None of them were as offensively awful as any Origins character unfortunate enough to show up in DA2 outside of Isabela. But I think BioWare could have done a much better job in still adhering to the general looks of the Origins characters in transitioning them to Inquisition. Instead the artists seemingly got infatuated with giving everyone a bunch of moles and pock marks on their faces.

And as others have said, while the fidelity of the faces in Inquisition was generally pretty good, my god, the hair was dreadful. Even a character like Morrigan, who had probably the "best" hair in the game, still had some awfully plastic, stiff looking hair.

I disagree with basically everything except this.  The hair in Inquisition was horrible from the very first promotional screenshot.

Men get like 4 options. shaved, frilly, actually bald and, hippie when it comes to hair >.>
not to mention they just lumped stubble and facial hair into the same slider for reasons unknown to the world.
