After the last update, my tanks, mostly Cassandra, refuse to use any abilities, making my mage inquisitor the prime target and combat a pain in the tuckus. Even when I set the the taunt abilities to preferred she just swings at the enemy doing mediocre damage while they're obviously focusing on the actual damage dealers. Adaar can take a good amount of punishment for a mage but he's no tank, and is noticably extremely frustrated. ANOTHER PATCH is needed!

Hmmm... I don't have that issue... Maybe you should check you "Tactics" tab and make sure they aren't disabled? Or maybe set certain abilities that you'd like them to use a lot as "Preferred".

Tanks are operating fine on my end as well.  I admit some times a companion gets "stuck" (i.e. they won't move) but if I switch control and move them it fixes that.  The aforementioned problem is not tank specific.  What platform are you on?  Maybe post this in the technical help forum.

You might also want to go to the "Behaviors" tab and make sure that the stamina reserve is set low. The default is 50%, but I've found that the tanks rarely use their abilities at that level. I drop it to 20% and it seems to help.

I forgot about that. Yeah, sometimes they may get stuck in their "battle ready" position, standing with their weapon drawn. They'd stand there idle, even if attacked. The only way I found to get past that is to switch to control them manually and make them jump... IIRC

I don't blame them though.  If you get hit in the head too many times memory problems are bound to happen.  ;)

Yeah I'm sure my companions have suffered their fair share of concussions..

I don't really get this problem, but I do get the problem where she (or others) get stuck, and you have to switch to them and jump.  That seems to be related to animation canceling, at least when it occurs to characters you are controlling.

As for taunts specifically, I don't recall having that problem.  I have had companions stop using abilities before, and IIRC a reload would fix it.  Have read about similar no ability use problems where others said they needed a game restart to fix it.

Similar problem as the OP is happening in my latest file. However in my case, Instead of taunting enemies at the beginning of battle, they're doing it when everyone is almost dead, and hardly using other abilitys.
As for getting stuck during combat, the only way to avoid it that I've found, is by only having one melee fighter in the party. If I use more than one, it's guaranteed one or more will get stuck. Tis about time this annoying little bug was patched.
I'm on Xbone by the way.

ah man, I checked all the behavior and tactics options, i'm starting to think it might be something like a corrupted save then (pc user), i'd hate to have to start all over again

You regenerate stamina so fast in this game I just set everyone's reserve to 0% and it works very well!

I'm not saying that it doesn't work, because it does.  But your party will never have enough stamina/magic to cast the very expensive spells in the game.

Try resetting all her tactics to default (basically just switch everything except focus abilities to "on") and see if changing her targeting settings to the default (follow controlled character) doesn't get her to start using abilities again. Also make sure the little tactics toggle didn't get unchecked by accident (at the top of the behavior tab IIRC; I'm not sure exactly what it does).

I've seen someone who also had an issue where past a certain point most companions stopped using abilities (even messing around with tactics, all they'd do is basic attack everything). But that was just after the game came out last year, and I don't really have any idea why it would occur.

It happens then you respec characters, restarting the game always helps. However in descent dlc defensive ability almost never work, in “Never did get Vivienne to use Fade Cloak topic I posted video about.

After using a respec trinket my mates "freeze" too on Xbox One. You have to completely close the game and reload.

If this doesn't help, try to set everything in "tactics" back to default. I would also suggest to let everyone follow himself and set a low stamina reserve. For me, this setup made the most out of the horrible AI. Well, actually tank is the best working AI.

By any chance you doing the descent. If so its because party ai doesnt work right in that dlc. Main reason why people find the dlc hard. In that dlc areas waych and u will see you party uses no defensive ability till they have drunk all the hp potions and are near death.

Having this issue as well, and with mages too.  Even if I manually use an ability, they...don't.  I have to take control of the character and jump to break the stuck-loop.

Now I am having this issue with Cassandra. Bloody brat thinks she too good for her abilities. Not doing descent, by the way.

Having this issue as well. Seems the only solution is to switch to them and move them, after which they should act normally.

Not surprising with Bioware's history of patches for this game that they broke something trying to fix something else.

Did not really help. I think it may have something to do with Vanguard + Weapon and Shield. Bull uses his two handed tree fine, but neither he nor casandra use the vanguard tree, or at least war cry and charging bull, even set to preferred.
