I don't want a preset first or last name.

If they did both, my time with DA would be done.

people keep saying that the first name keeps there uniqueness, but having the same last name of thousands of hawke's and shepard's kind of takes away that.

How does that work, exactly? Since, in your examples, the protagonist is either Hawke or Shepard, the only way to differentiate between saves at a glance is first names. So, to carry your logic out, having, as I do now in Inquisition, 7 saves all named "Dave", for example, makes them somehow more unique, or easier to tell who is who?

I'll pick my own first name, thanks.

No. That is not an idea that is at all compatible with a roleplaying game in which you are creating your own character. Leave that to games with completely set protagonists. There are ways to refer to people without using either their first name or their last name, and it makes more sense to find those ways (personally, I find "Warden" and "Inquisitor" are much less jarring than "Hawke").

Having a set last name is at times annoying. Having a completely set name might well put me off the next game entirely. It would be another step towards feeling like you're just being handed a character at the start of the game and then told to choose how they look, which is a very different thing than actually making a character. At that point, you might as well cut the appearance customisation as well and just slap a default character in (and yeah, that would almost certainly also put me off the next game entirely).

Well instead of the first name you pick you just pick that last name. so it would look like John Cena or Jane whatever.

-Yes I remember the names of my wardens, Hawkes, Inquisitors, Shepards, etc...

-I play a TON of alts so even if I didn't care about making my own character, having separate names helps me identify which character I'm going to be playing when looking at the save files

-I would much rather go through the sometimes awkwardness of a title or last name than have my choice of my character's name taken away, especially if I don't like that name (like John, Jane, or Garrett)

One idea that might fit both groups of fans is to give the PC a nickname (which they can express a like or dislike for) so the nickname and a title could both be used.

Or, we just leave it like it is.

Perhaps rather than a set first name, which doesn't bother me personally, they instead earn a nickname. This is what your friends and or love interest calls you rather than a formal title or surname.

I mean if "Hawke" had simply been a nickname, then it would have made sense for everyone to call you by it, regardless of the name the player selected at the start. Not all that different to being called by a surname you never picked.

Why? The current system works. If I wanted a fixed protagonist, I could play games that offer one. It's not like there's a shortage of them out there.

Just to try it. see what it's like to see if it can work.

Yeah, good thing you're not developing a video game: Hey, let's spend a few thousand dollars recording VOs for something that our audience may not want over all.

While it would not really bother me much, they could create a nickname for your close friends to use for you.  It just makes no sense for your friends to call you "Warden, Inquisitor, Herald, etc."  I like how in DA2 they called you Hawke.  Something more like that would be nice to see in the future games.

I agree. I don't think having a set first name would be well received by most of the fans, even though I wouldn't mind it because we are never called by the name we choose and I always liked Bioware's default first names anyway. But I think a last name or nickname would be the best choice here. Hawke was a great name. It felt more of a nickname and while it doesn't make much sense having your mother call you by your surname, it felt really natural when companions did it. So they need to come up with last names (or a nickname for the last names) that don't sound too formal. In DAI it would just sound weird if people would start calling you Trevelyan, Lavellan, etc. They aren't exactly "casual" sounding names.

Another option is trying not to have the characters mention your name or title at all. To be honest I don't remember Alistair calling my warden "warden" in DAO. Maybe once or twice? And he's probably the character you have more dialogue with in the entire game. DAI annoyed me to no end because everyone was calling me "Inquisitor" left and right when it could be avoided half of the time.

I'm not totally opposed to the idea; I just hope the names they choose don't suck. I guess the one thing that might bug me is when creating different characters for different playthroughs. Will it now be "PC 1" and "PC 2"? I guess in-game, it's not that much different from people saying "Hawke", but I dunno, it just feels different, if that makes any sense.

No, please. The best part of the build up to a new game is drafting characters, and names are an incredibly important part of that process for me. It's also pointless- people get called by nicknames/titles/last names all the time (especially in military organizations) so it's hardly some super weird or obscure thing. Barring another situation with family (which I feel has been well handled so far), the only time it feels really out of place is in romance dialogue, and pronouns work just as well as specific names.

@iamthedreadwolf- Alistair is a great example. He referred to the PC as his "fellow Grey Warden", but I don't think he ever used anything besides "my friend" or some other pet name in conversation with the PC.

I name all of my characters on some variation of Steve male or female. I have done that from the first RPG I ever played, even when I would consent to play D&D, its always Steve

Sure, I'm terrible with names anyway. Customizable last name would feel more organic since people who don't really know you will refer to you by your title anyway but your friends/LI will actually call you by your first name like normal people do.

The first name should be voiced, like the 1000 something possible names like in the future Fallout 4 game.

I'd be okay with some sort of nickname, but not a fixed first name.  I've never particularly liked BioWare's default first names.

I really like to find names for my characters and it's important to me, but dialogues get really awkward sometimes, especially in Inquisition. Shepard or Hawke worked, as they're both (second) names of the characters, and NPCs adressed Shepard by name or as Commander, depending on the situation. But for example, Cassandra is mostly called by first name, sometimes by Seeker and I don't remember anyone calling her Pentaghast. It's really weird to have a romantic/sexual relationship with someone that calls you Inquisitor.

How about this? You can still choose the name you want, BUT, there's a few names (3 to 5 per race/gender) that have voice recordings in game and NPCs adress you by that name sometimes. If you choose another one, the game keeps the usual Inquisitor/Warden/whatever.
