The game's engine just tries its best to translate the appearance s/he had in DA2 into the new character model.
Can the result be satisfying?

You don't get to recreate him/her on your own in a character creation screen, right?

Wrong. You get to work on him/her in a version of the character creator, or you can accept a default Hawke.
Here's the one I made of my canon Hawke. Sadly I don't have a comparison screenshot to hand...

It's the other way around: your Hawke's face doesn't get imported, you're taken to the chargen menu and customize their face yourself, from scratch. As for the result being satisfying... well, it's the same character creation you have at the start, so you have all those same customization options to sculpt Hawke's face with - if you've got the hang of the chargen, there's no limit to what you can do to make your Hawke look just right. I think my DAI Hawke looked even better than my DA2 one in the end, because I could sculpt her face to the smallest details that we didn't even have in DA2.
The only thing you'll notice is that none of the hair options in-game really matches the hairs we had available for Hawke in DA2, so your Hawke will have changed their haircut between games. Which actually makes sense in the timeline, so it's not as jarring as it seems - there's a three/four years gap between the last time we see Hawke in DA2 and the first time we see them in DAI, so it's not hard to imagine your Hakwe might have grown/cut/changed their hairstyle at some point inbetween.

On the internet, you can't know the tone of someone's words. That's what leads to arguments a lot of the times.

Indeed. Qun asked a matter-of-fact question and I offered a matter-of-fact answer. No dickishness was intended. On the internet, you can't know the tone of someone's words. That's what leads to arguments a lot of the times.

I think it was how blunt you were when you answered. You answered with the word "Wrong" first. That may have given @Qun00 the wrong impression.

I would like to add that you only get the character creator for Hawke if you imported a world state from Keep. If you use the default world state that comes with Inquisition then you don't get to customize Hawke and Hawke will always be a male mage.
