Currently playing as a noble warrior.  My parties almost always have Morrigan and Leliana in them.  As to number 3, it's usually Alistair or Wynne.  Having two mages seems to be a must for the big boss fight.  One to fire the artillery, the other to patch up wounds.  Alistair takes the place of Wynne usually when required or strongly suggested by the story.  (He's not necessary at Redcliffe, but it seems wrong to exclude him.)

As to the others, hopelessly underused.

1) Dog (I named him Edgar), poor fellow, after appearing early in the story gets put on a leash in the backyard as soon as Leliana makes her grand entrance.  After I made Leliana a ranger, we could have a "dog" and still have four full-powered team members.

2) Zevran, second most underutilized character.  After trying to kill my PC, it's hard to warm up to him.  It doesn't help that he lacks the ability to open locked chests when he joins your team.  By then, Leliana is already at the second or third level of lock-picking.  I can't stand the thought of leaving an unopened chest and that usually means Lady Nightingale.

3) Sten.  Another one I find hard to warm up to given his history as a mass murderer.  (I've yet to keep him around long enough to uncover the details and whatever mitigating circumstances there were.)  Also, I played Inquisition before I played Origins and the lack of horns takes away part of the "alien-ness" that would make him more interesting.

4) Shale.  Not as underutilized as the first three, but used mostly in the deep roads/Orzamar (until Oghren makes his entrance).

5) Oghren.  Probably my favorite of the underutilized characters.  I use Alistair more largely because of story requirements and Orzamar is usually the last campaign I do before the Landsmeet.

If I play as a mage, Wynne ends up on the "underutilized" list.

Am I missing something by playing this way?  Any flaws in my logic?

Apologies if this subject has been discussed earlier.

We can't have party banter with dog, so it's his main weakness. But it's nice to see him at the camp.

Apart from that, my usual team is the opposite of yours, I almost never take Morrigan or Leliana, and I take Zevran (if I need a rogue) because his party banter is more funny. I always take Alistair with me because he is usually the love interest of my warden. I take Oghren from time to time for his random dialogues with others, and Wynne because she is a great healer (not really because I like her...)

And Sten... he doesn't have a lot to say, but with Morrigan in the team, what they say together is quite funny.

Depends on my class and playstyle... it I am a tank, I usually leave Alistair at the camp (unless something involving him happens, then I take him with me), if I am melee DPS, it's usually Zevran/Oghren/Sten, who stays at the camp (again - if there is some extra content with them, I take them with me) and so on...

On my Arcane Warrior build I was generally rotating two squads - Warden + Morrigan + Leliana + Sten/Oghren/Shale (DPS spec) or Warden + Wynne + Zevran + Leliana... Wynne has some hilarious banter with Zevran. I take Leliana in both cases, because she is only one in my party (Zevran doesn't take the skill), who can unlock chests.

As for the dog - he actually has banter with others (like begging Morrigan for more food... that was adorable  ) and even reacts in some conversations, but since he has limited uses at high levels, I leave him normally at the camp as well. Thankfully, there's one useful little mod that allows you to take him as summon, so... screw the balance, I like my dog too much. :D

Most used: Alistair (Tank), Wynne (Healer) and Dog (because Doggie!  <3 ). I also bring Leliana and Zevran on occasion.

Most underused: Morrigan, Sten, and Shale, because they often disapprove of helping people.

Once Alistair has been recruited, he's in my Warden's party for the duration, with a very few exceptions (like if I'm soloing, or doing something super-roguish like the Slim Couldry quests).

On the other hand, in more than a dozen playthroughs, I've never ever used Sten, at all, beyond occasionally taking him out of camp to run through banter (and for the confrontation and smack down at Haven).

Pretty much this.

Since I normally play as a mage, once I recruit Leliana, Dog or Morrigan go to camp for most of the rest of the game.  Sten half the time doesn't get recruited at all.  Oghren and Shale see a lot of face time in the deep roads, otherwise they also camp sit.  I enjoy Wynne, Alistair, Zevran and Leliana banters so they see the most time in my groups.

My most used companions are Wynne as she is pretty much essential, Shale for her combination of strength and durability and Alistair since he is very relevant to the main story.

My most playthroughs are Cousland TH warrior.

Alistair and Morrigan never(never) leave my side, Leliana 70%

                                                                               Oghren 20%

the remaining 10 is divided between Wynne and Shale.

Unless I am playing that particular role I tend to use:

Alistair (tank)
Wynne (heals)
Leliana/Morrigan (depending on if I need a Rogue or not)
Dog (Extra Dog Slot ftw)

I rotate other character in and out for their most relevant quests. I don't tend to use the melee DPS that much. RDPS >MDPS.

As a mage I always used Alistair/Morrigan/Leliana . Wynne only when I had a bad boss fight . Usually I almost never used Wynne because i just took a minor healing spell for me and Morrigan. With two dps mages in my party I cracked everything lol. Besides these are the companions I loved the most.

As a noble warrior? It was the same lol.

At first I was interested in bring Zevran, but I started to leave him behind because of the chests. So I brought Leliana, who was very useful.

Wynne for healing, Morrigan because I like her abilities.

Basically I hardly ever used Sten, Alistair, Shale or Zevran. I tried sometimes, but I felt more comfortable with my three mage+archer party. I loved the combos. My warden was an arcane warrior.

I tend to use all except Wynne - I detest her character. Usually I just kill her during that first encounter in the tower.

Zevran is great for boss fights.  In any fight where it's just the group with a big bad his Assassin's mark makes my buffed up warrior or ginsu rogue hugely more effective.

Alistair is the one I use throughout the game.

Poor Leli gets to sit in the camp most because Zev has more damage output than her. I do try and take her when I know I'm doing something that sort of relevant to her like the sacred ashes quest.

Alistair is always in my party doesn't matter which playthrough. It makes sense that both Grey Wardens would always travel together and i love him. I think Sten is the one i use the least, as i have no need of two warriors in my setup. I also use the respeclization mod on every playthrough so i can make them into whatever i want!

Well, could make argument against that - you are the last two known Grey Wardens in Ferelden, it might be good idea to leave Alistair in the camp in case the whole party you go with is going to die, so there will be at least one Grey Warden left. Of course it doesn't make much sense in terms of gameplay rules - your Warden perish - game over.

The only place I don't bring Alistair is the Deep Roads (Since Oghren is forced on you eventually there anyway) with this kind of reasoning.  However, upside I use him a lot. He's a Grey Warden, it's his job to end the Blight.  He would chafe being left in camp all the time (and they should have included a convo to that effect in the game).

Zevran is pretty good rogue he is DW assassin which makes him best DPS but however you need to controll him to open his potencial  i still see him one of the best picks

Sten i'm not fan of DPS warrior because in DA:O they don't have much big potencial to do DMG  unless you play TWO-HANDED WARRIOR but still he is very

slow and has slow attack speed so i think Sten is worst companion he is very annoying early and if you don't boost his approval via console/gifts he is still the

annoying grim nancy who talks no sense about the darkspawns and then he in normal voice tells you "ONE DAY WE WILL INVADE YOUR HOME :)))" worst pick low tier

Dog: there is a mod which allows you the fourth member of companion and it's the dog because he is only viable as a tank and there are still better tank (alistar, shale) so with mod he is good for backdoor otherwise useless in my opinion mid tier

Shale is very good tank and underused character  good if you are planning to play 3 rogues and 1 tank she maybe can have only 2 accessories but still good high tier

Oghren i see him as a offtank than tank he joins your party late in the game and starts with two handed abilities i see him good only if you play tank and you want extra tanky + dps in frontline but if you play mage/rogue he is useless

Wynne best healer in the game if you play on the nightmare you will need her asap unless you play healer mage she starts with spirit healer and has healing abilities which are choices between life and death  for your party nest for rogue and warrior warden but if you play healer mage she is useless unless you ain't playing CC mage god tier (unless you play healer mage low tier)

Morrigan is interesting pick i hate her in way she hates every my decision helping wynne etc... but i love her abilities and her exotic view she is good CC mage and i see her as a good pick high tier

Alistar: best tank in DA:O nothing more to say God tier funny respondes and fun with him

Lelianna: if you play mage/warrior she is god tier in early/mid game she is your only rogue and starts with bow abilities

but when you get Zevran he is better pick for his  DW assassin role which in my opinion deals bigger dmg in late game you don't have problem with money so you can buy him books which gives him points to unlock lockpicking chests + so early/mid game she is best in late game mid tier

DRAGON AGE AWAKENING

Anders: you first mage and let's call him Anders the junior he is verry funny and something he is like brother of funny hawk version  before he turns into grim negative emo ------ like the justice in DA2  and on nightmare difficulty best healer unless you dont play that role tier God for rogue/warrior/CC mage

Oghren: our old drunked dwarf who loves killing dwarves in taverns  is in DA:A again same result as in my previous rating mid tier

Nathaniel: your first rogue but i see in him bigger potencial and yet he still can do tons fo damage if build properly so high tier he hates you early but you will like him if you are noble male he often agrees with your decisions + he act with honor

Justice: early negative emo ----- who is angry because he is in human world i think demons would beat him hard for this  but best tank in DA:A in late game he reveals to be a warrior with honor and glory he fight for the justice he often is against your decisions but if you play mage/rogue best tank so god tier

Velanna: she is worse than Merrill in DA2 she is sociopath who hates city elves, humans and dwarves she was exlied from her dalish clan and she is psychopath because she often yells at the player and then she has some romance with him  if player tells her anything bad about her sister she will hate him even more very empathy and psychopathic character hot head temperament in combat however she is your only CC mage (if you don't ****** slap her in dalish camp for her bitching mood what oghren approves) so even with her almost suicidal behaviour she is best CC mage

Sigrun: a dwarf who thinks death in some abandoned thaig and end as food for darkspawns is the biggest honor ever she is DW assassin like zevran so she is in my opinion better pick than nathaniel she is often neutral and crazy in some way and also broken like your main imported character if you pust points into her spec and figure how she is immortal unkillable machine like you so god tier also she decline your offer to join you if you dont tell her that grey warden means slow death and fighting the darkspawn  god tier

That's all i hope it helps you in making good companions

oh right . In Awakening I used me ( mage/warrior noble ) I got stuck with Oghren as Tank until I got Justice :P / Anders when need heals Velanna and Nate.

My sual party was Me, Justice Nate and Velanna / Anders but in the end I loved the banter between those three and I ended up with me tanking as a mage lol.

Awakening...

I always used Nathaniel on my last playthrough, he could open locks, but also had surprisingly high damage numbers. Then it was either Anders or Velanna (I was a mage with healing as my secondary role, so I didn't need Anders that much and Velanna had Blood Wound)... basically he was there as a substitution for Wynne and she for Morrigan. Last party member wasn't all that important, so I altered between Oghren and Sigrun as a melee DPS. Justice was used only during his personal quest.

You mean the Arcane warrior right? It was too OP that BIOWARE cut this spec in DA2  but with this spec your imported character was broken i had the best armour + accessories and played human noble templar and when i imported my character i lost all my items but effects from them were still on me so no wonder i had 200 AD resist and 100 magic resist + 85% all elemental damage resist  i could do whole game solo it was fun

So if you are noble warrior tank i suggest your team will look Healer wynne,CC morgana,Lelianna DPS/Zevran if you let him live and he joined you and dog for backdoor (if you installed that mod) even after the nerfs on mages they are nukers

I planned to do that, returned to the camp left Alistair there, and went to the deep roads but the moment that Archedemon cutscene triggered i reloaded a save and brought him along, it didn't feel right seeing Urthemiel for the first time without him even though there is no conversation or whatsoever(which is weird).

And no matter how many times i play origins i still do that, i have a weird way of thinking.

Origins:

Most used: Leliana (fav rogue for chests), Shale/Alistair (tank), Morrigan/Wynne (depends of my Warden occupation).

Most unused: Dog, Sten, Zevran, Oghren.

Awakening;

Most used: Sigrun/Nathaniel, Justice, Anders/Velanna (depends if i need a healer or a damage dealer).

Most unused: Oghren.

The ones i use the least aren't because i dislike them, it's just that usually they not fit my way of play. Doesn't matter how i edit Oghren's tactics he will always go on a suicide rampage.
