Is your warden male or female & did you keep Leliana a softy?

What is it with the two-handed warriors?  Both Sten and Oghren always seem to be the first to die in any difficult fight unless you nurse them along every second!  (Needless to say, when my warden is a warrior, it's always sword and shield.)  Even in Inquisition (I actually played that before I discovered DAO), the two-handed warrior Iron Bull is the same way, always the first to die. :(

Just curious, what ending do most people here prefer?  Dark Ritual or US?  How dramatic is the end in US?  What if your love interest (most likely Leli) is in the party for the final battle?

My current intention is to save before Landsmeet and have my current warden go through all three possible endings:  Dark Ritual, US, and Loghain makes US.  I wonder if I'd be able to save all three outcomes with same warden?

I did that with the final game I played before DA2 was released. Just save immediately prior to Morrigan offering her DR.  Then refuse (or accept), finish out that ending.  Go back to your previous save and then do the other thing.

If Loghain or the Warden must die, save just prior to going out on the rooftop, kill the AD, see that ending, then go back to the previous save before the rooftop battle and do the other death.

All three endings, easy as pie.  Even easier if you can run the console to /killallhostiles in the fights to get to the endings quicker.

My warden is a female, city elf rogue.  While always trying to harden Alistair (he's supposed to be king after all), I always keep Leliana soft and idealistic.  I've never done the "ultimate sacrifice" ending, but I assume that other party members -- including your significant other -- are going to be taken by surprise by how things end.

So, regarding the various endings, can you then save all those world states (for the same PC) for use with DA Awakening?  DA II?  Etc.

Female warden, romancing softy Leliana, and making the ultimate sacrifice is my favourite ending.

(and softy Alistair makes a great King, if the warden stays on as Chancellor to rule for him)

I haven't tried it, but just to be safe, I would make a copy of your "PostCampaign_1" saved game folder, somewhere else after each one, in case it gets overwritten.

Leliana's bard skills may give you some power boost, but offensively she is pretty weak.

*Gasps* I had a Queen Cousland with a Hardeneded Alistair. I hate Alistair as a soften king, no way is he getting pushed around by Teagan and his antics. And yeah, i romanced him too. That's my favorite ending, besides for the Prince-Consort Cousland/ Morrigan romance ending... which is also pretty chill too.

Might as well toss my hat into the ring. My most used companions are :Morrigan, Leliana, and Oghren. My least are: Alistair, Sten, and Barkspawn.

Oghren: Understand that I've always enjoyed the Aeducan Warden's story the most in this game and I tended to rp him as much as I could. After killing Trian Aurelian emotionally shut down. After Ostagar the group traveled to Orzammar. Oghren is a deeper character then most people seem to realize and by bringing him with me everywhere, I Highly recommend taking him to the Ashes of Andraste for those of you that haven't, Aurelian kinda saw him as a redemption of sorts. This plays out by the end of the game beautifully if left to defend the gates.

Morrigan: What can I honestly say different here that so many others have stated before? I love her voice dark and smooth yet welcoming and cold at the same time. I love her romance arc. I even love her sarcastic biting wit. She will probably be my favorite female love interest of all of video gaming. Moving on.

Leliana: As with Oghren and Morrigan I love how her character evolves or rather settles unto itself with your characters help, a person hiding from herself only to find that by hiding she had become better or rather truer to her own character.

Sten: Sten never did much for me character wise, I liked the man sure but he never seemed to have all that much character until his fade sequence and only then it seems. Looking back in hindsight after playing both DA II and DA:I This makes a LOT of sense, its certainly worth taking him out for his Morrigan banters if just for all the meaning you can decipher from them now.

Shale: . . . Eh? I mean I liked Shale and all but after Caridin and finding her true name I tended to leave her at camp. Moving on.

Alistair:. . . I like Alistair I do. I feel that he is a requirement for the Redcliffe quests. I tend to harden him and make him King with Queen Anora. I guess I can say that for all that I like him personally I was constantly wanting to argue or debate with him with what happened at Ostagar. So good friend, but still a fool.

Wynne:. . . Cool Old mage that was rather condescending towards our Grey Warden. I bore with it and got closer to her but not the best of relations.

Zevren: Cool bud to have around, I convinced him to be happy and he decided to stick around.

Loghain: Ah the biggest base breaker in all of video game fiction. Was he justified in his inaction? Did he plan to commit treason at the start? Well Sola's won't spill the beans so the world will never know. I loved Loghain's character even as I hated his nonsensical decisions. Would probably be among the most used if not for the short amount of time we had him.

Awakening: . . I am replaying through Origins right now and its been far to long ago for me to discuss these characters in depth at the moment.

The companion I used the least was Zev. Even the one time I chose him as an LI. I just never needed the dude. Throw away character for me. Leliana was always more useful as a rouge.

On my first play-thru, I never ever used Sten. At final battle, he was still in his clothing with no weapon. Punching the Darkspawn with his fists. LOL

Now when I play, I rotate all the characters, dress them up and equip them with weapons. ;)

I barely use Sten/Zev/Oghren about equally. But use Oghren enough in DAA.

I don't mind Zevran, but Leliana is pretty much full time, and she's got lockpicking right off the bat. Plus, you don't have to manage archers to get the most from them.

It's funny how badly I played at first. Zev got killed, I think. Sten never approved much.

I lost that save, so I recently recreated a playthrough almost as bad (if you can call it bad. It isn't exactly).

Oghren is awesome, and one of these days I need to take him into the Fade during Broken Circle.  IRL I'd probably stay far away from a drunken sot like that, but in-game you get those wonderful glimpses of just what a softy he can be - especially if you get to Awakening and manage to trigger his personal quest.  He and Zev are two of my perennial sidekicks.  They both feel like the type of character that can take anything life throws at them and just roll with it.

really? I find Lelianas a great all rounder better than Zevran and probably for me rogue wise probably one of the best companions in the series.

In Awakening, is it better to start a new hero, or to keep the same one as before? (story-wise) ?

for me keep the asme one if they've survived I've only played Awakening so far with wardens that have survived the main story

Yeah, I don't have anything against them either.

And funnily I know many Oghrens. lol. Probably not a good thing.

I like their easy take on life too. Same with Isabela. But it's also why I hate Iron Bull. He's supposed to be the worldly character in DAI + with "mentoring bro skillz!!" but he's insincere.. A poser. These other characters remind me of real things, but he just annoys me. It doesn't help that the Inquisition is supposed to be the "best of Thedas" and leaders over the world.. At least Isabela or Zevran were just in bands of adventurers.. not some overblown organization. I wouldn't put them in the core Inquisition either. If they set out making a serious plot, then I prefer they stop being such clowns about it.

Well, time does change a person. I’ve been rather warming up to Sten. He’s still not my favorite, but I’m using him more. Really, based on the character I’m playing, I use all of the characters more or less equally. Well, except for Dog. I sometimes pull him out when just wandering towns and such to see what goodies he can dig up, but that’s about it. I’ve even finally experimented with [secret companion]. Still haven’t tried any DLC, so no Shale.

Went and did Orzammar first on one playthrough, just so I could see Oghren’s reactions to some of the quests one generally does “earlier.” His fade dream is...kind of sad. Scratch that, it’s really sad. He really has a low opinion of himself!

That's too bad. I think Shale was a free bonus when I got the game years ago. That's one of the best companions they've done though. And very useful to boot.

I never felt the need to respec Zevran while I was sorely tempted when I played two rogue two mage set up and had to use Leliana for a melee rogue. DPS wise she wasn't anywhere near Zevran whether she plays as a melee rogue or archer rogue. I'm one of those who don't really care that much about lock picking and stealing. Zevran's stealth skills are a gold when it comes to killing enemy mages. I guess different people want different things from their rogues.

For me, most underused or not used at all

i. Dog - He lost his charm after getting other party members

ii. Sten - I only need one warrior in my party

iii. Zevran - I only need one rouge in my party

iv. Oghren - I only use him in the Deep Road for story reason, i only need one warrior in my party

Most used

i. Alistair - he's a warrior and a tank, got him early so just stick with him, also for story purpose

ii. Leliana - got her early, I only need one rogue in the party to disarm traps and lockpicking

iii. Morrigan - got her early, my nuker, used her when not using Wynne

iv. Wynne - my healer, used her when not using Morrigan

So for Warrior or Mage playthrough i only use Alistair, Leliana, Morrigan or Wynne

For Rogue playthrough i only use Alistair, Morrigan and Wynne, because i can disarm traps and lockpicking myself

Other companions are used occasionally for story reason

yeah maybe your right.I don't use respec mods in Origins as I don't have any so I end up accepting what I'm given and make best use of it. Besides I don't feel I need them really. Because I just usually run with  1 rogue I prefer that rogue to be an all rounder therefore Leliana gets that role as I find with the specs she has she best suits that out of her and Zevran. But then in my current run I went through with only Leliana as I killed Zevran in that mission he attacks you early in the game rather than reviving him so had no choice but to run with her after that in this playthrough.. My squuad makeup is usually 1 mage 1 rogue 2 warriors. Although I did sometimes change that in my current run as I actually did the Deep Roads part of Orzammar with 3 warriors this time Alistair, Shale and Oghren. It worked surprisingly well actually so was quite pleased with that.

Since I first posted on this thread, I have gotten better at alternating companions.  Currently, my most underutilized character is Zevran.  By the time he arrives, Leliana has had time to build up her chest-cracking skills and I generally never keep more than one rogue on my teams.  Also, my wardens tend to romance Lelaina.

Dog would be even more underutilized than Zevran but for the extra dog slot mod.
