Depends on what weapon you let them use and what weapon you use,actually.....like I use Morrigan as an attacking mage, and Wynne as a healer mage. Sten when I need a two-handed warrior and all those abilities. I think my most used is Alistair, because I like to involve him in all the stories,he's actually kinda funny and yet justice. My most underused is probably Leliana, she doesn't do much damage since I made her an archer, and she can't take much attacks either...funny thing is,the dog when his level gets high enough, there's an ability for him that allows him to pin a normal enemy to the ground and it's always instant kill! I almost never used that dog until very late I found out this awesome ability, perfect for a group of normal enemies!
Most used and underused companions?

It honesty depends on which Origin Warden I'm playing really.
If my Warden is a mage then my team is usually Barkspawn(dog), Leliana, then Oghren(Sten until I meet him.)
If my Warden is a warrior, she's always a sword/shield warrior so her team is Wynne, Leliana and Oghren.
If my Warden is a rogue, then her team is Wynne, Barkspawn and Oghren.
So there should be a pattern that can be picked up from that. Leliana and Wynne are very heavily used characters of mine. This isn't done by personal like/dislike its practicality. Wynne is my healer but I can cover that role myself as a mage. Leliana is my lockpicker but I can cover that role myself as a rogue.
A little bit less often but still commonly used are Dog who I set up to be my tank, and Oghren who closes up the party with 2her damage dealer. Until I recruit him, Sten takes that role.
I do bring Alistair along for the Redcliff quest due to the storyline involving him, but not the urn of sacred ashes. I ditch him as soon as the storyline no longer requires him present.
If I've recruited Shayle, I bring her along to the Deep Roads in place of my tank.
I roleplay a bit with Alistair, my Warden feels he should remain safe in camp whenever possible so that if she dies on some insane quest to gain allies, there's still one Grey Warden left. Zevran doesn't come with lockpicking skills and its very late into the game before he levels up enough for me to bring him up to speed. He hardly gets a chance. And Morrigan..... eh while I can spec her into a healer at lvl 14 or so I guess its the same problem. She's just not specced enough to be half the healer Wynne is. Doesn't help that I dislike Morrigan and ffind most of her recommendations stupid so I'd get huge disapproval if I took her along.

As for the opposite, Morrigan and Alistair are always present; I keep switching between Leliana and Wynne.

Next is Alistair. He plays the role of my Warden's best friend, and I take him almost everywhere. However, I don't bring him to Orzammar or the Deep Roads, as he seems to have little to no approval gains.
Morrigan is in my party all the time when I'm romancing her (I take her out in Redcliffe before accepting quests though). I always give her healing spells and the Spirit Healer specialization. I replace her with Wynne for the Circle Tower though.
When Morrigan isn't in my party, I use Wynne as my mage.
Leliana is my designated lockpick, but I also bring her along if I'm romancing her. Unfortunately, she seems to be terrible at combat. Man, archery sucks... unless it's the NPCs with their 2 dozen Scattershots.
Sten is my least used. He's squishy as hell, despite his size. I only bring Oghren and Shale in dwarven places. I only bring Dog when I'm expecting a brutal fight like the random wolfpack ambush encounter. Oh, I forgot Zevran. He's my least used.

How can you replace Sigrun after that? It's in the last zone of the game.

Morrigan is always with me. Her abilities are most useful. Sleep, Waking Nightmare and Cone of Cold, Blizzard, etc. My Warden is a mage and I think having two mages in the party is the best way to go.
Most underused would have to be the Dog. They shouldn't have made him a companion I think. It was done better in DA2 where you could just summon him anytime you wish.

The characters selection appears right after the moment you kill her, a bit weird but it happens

Morrigan, Zevran and Alistair/Loghain are my main ones. I hardly use Dog, Leliana and swap Sten, Shale and Oghren on occasion. in DAA Nate was always at my side along with Sigrun and Anders. I hardly used Justice (nothing against his abilities, but walking corpses creep me out evne though we did become friends) and Velanna. Again I would swap a companion for Oghren on occasion.

I never, ever go anywhere without Dog. Not possible.
I've never used Zevran or Sten. Not once.
My party is usually
Dog
Alistair
Shale
4 Warriors

Wut. im assuming your PC is a two handed or dual weapon warrior? Because the others don't really deal that much damage.

Depending on my characters
If I am playing as a rogue - Alistair, Shale and Dog
If I am playing as a mage - Alistair, Leliana and Shale
If I am playing as a warrior - Alistair, Leliana and Dog/Shale.
Never actually realised how much I used the same ones.
Alistair because he is my favourite and I love bringing him along, even when I am not romancing him.
Dog because he is dog, he doesn't leave my Warden's side, ever. (especially my Cousland, he is the only family member they know is alive and they are not going anywhere without him). (It also helps that I have a mod that allows me to have him in the party permanently while freeing up another space for Leliana on the PC)
Shale because she is awesome and kicks ass (plus I love her snarky comments)
Leliana because she is pretty much the only rogue I like.
I never bother with mages (unless I am a mage) because I have Alistair, who always have his templar abilities maxed out thus he helps out with mages.
Dog has howl which helps to paralyse enemies.
My rogue/Leliana is archery so that is long ranged covered.
As a mage, I always make sure I have dispel and prison crush, allowing for easier battles.
Morrigan - while she is okay, her disapproval when you want to help out become irritating and Wynne had grated on my nerves since I first recruited her so I never bother having her in the party (unless I get her personal mission to track down the elf).
There is no need for Sten and Oghren in my party because I already have Alistair/Dog/Shale as my warrior (Unless I am playing as a warrior)
Zevran...I came to not like him much, because I told him to stop flirting with my character and gained disapproval as a result. Needless to say, that did not impress me thus I stay far away from him as much as I can while ensuring I don't trigger anything that gets me ninja romanced by him when I am romancing someone else. (Happened once and I was sincerely pissed off)
(Origins and Inquisition are the only DA games where I always end up recruiting everyone, because it just makes sense considering the Warden/Inquisitor needs all the allies they can get)

I also make use of that respec mod so I can make party members use whatever I want them to.
When playing as a human I romance Alistair so he gets to come by default. But when I play as an Elf, Zevran takes that default spot and I swap between Alistair or Shale for a tank.
Wynne is the one person I bring 9 times out of 10 because of her healing. Even if I am a mage I can never really be bothered to mind people's health other than the occassional heal.
And Morrigan also frequents my party. Especially if I am not playing as a mage.
Leliana and Sten only occassionally tag along. Mostly on their personal quests. And Oghren is my least used character because he is always the last to join and as I already don't really see much use in 2handed warriors, Sten will be picked over Oghren. Even if I respec Oghren, he doesn't get used much as I don't really find him all that funny. I do always have him reunite with his wife so that's about the only time I voluntarily take him with me.
As for Awakenings; Justice and Anders are my two default party members, because of tanks and heals obviously. And the fourth spot will be taken by either Velanna or Nathaniel. When I play as a mage or human noble I take Nathaniel and for everything else I take Velanna.
Oghren again is seated on the bench for previously mentioned reasons. And Sigrun is the last to join so I can't even have her do the Joining and that irks me. Plus I don't really find her all that interesting.

On my first run, I neglected Morrigan because she annoyed me, Zevran because he failed me in Nature of the Beast (that one trap room, you know the one), and Sten because he ran out of dialogue and seemed to hate me. I even sent him away after a while. (Naked.) I think I got the Extra Dog Slot early, otherwise I never would have used him.
My party was usually Leliana, Wynne (I never left her at camp), and either Shale or Oghren. I discovered the respec mod late in the game, respecced everyone before the Landsmeet, and since then I can get better use of everyone. I brought Alistair, Wynne and Leliana against the Archdemon.
In Awakening, it was Anders and Nathaniel, usually with Oghren. I pretty much never used Velanna, I got Justice too late to really use him (I did have him against the Queen of the Blackmarsh, though), and I made the mistake of bringing Sigrun with her shitty build into the finale. She almost got me killed by the Mother. Never bringing her again. Also, next time I'll pick up Justice first.

Zevran and Sten are very squishy.
That, and melee rogues require a lot of micromanagement to be effective. If you're playing one yourself or have a non-dedicated-healer mage in your party who also needs management then Zevran becomes a pain in the ass to position.

There are only two companions I almost never use.
One of them is Zevran because he's pretty useless in battle and the other is Oghren for being a late addition in the story.
if you spec Zev right he is the least useless. he sometimes if i choose to spec him correctly, is at times a stronger tougher tank than alistair.
just gotta remember the poisons and traps. also setting tactics just so helps as well

for me it all depends on the class my own character is, as well as their romance option
My party however tends to be: Alistair, Zevran, Leliana/Wynne
Least used are: Sten and Shale
I try to use each of them equally but those two tend to stay behind to guard the camp as it were ![]()

DAO my fav party line up was Alistair, Zevran and Dog or Oghren
DAO least used companions Morrigan, Sten, Wynne, Leliana and Shale
Alistair fav companion and not just because he's usually my HoF LI, but because I almost exclusively play as a mage. Dog because he's my Mabari, and Zevran because he has some of the best banters in DAO.
DAA fav party line up Nathaniel and Sigrun usually with Oghren
DAA least used companions Anders, Velana and Justice
Nathaniel and Sigrun are constant companions from the moment I recruit them, and Oghren has most of the best/outrageous banters in DAA

My first playthrough was as a Warrior tank, so my party mainly consisted of Morrigan, Wynne, and Zevran(Zev was terrible, just brought him along for lockpicking).
This playthrough I'm a Mage, so I'm using Wynne to heal again, Leliana as range spec + lockpicking(actually does decent damage)and for tanks I've mostly used Alistair but have occasionally rotated in Sten and Oghren. Now trying Shale(for some reason I did that DLC super late).

Most underused: Everyone else. (Probably Oghren, since I always did Orzammar last.)

Wynne (Extra Spirit Healer/Arcane Warrior like myself)
Leliana (locks, doors, etc.)
They're all decent enough individuals, so I can behave with basic decency and they don't hate my guts for it.
