They saved the lives of other people besides their own, and put themselves in greater danger by doing so. There are many times that the word hero is misused (particularly in sports commentary), but this isn't one of them.

I just apply the term hero to someone that achieves the impossible to save lives. What they did is commendable but it shouldn't be unusual, society should be filled with people willing to actually do something when someone's life is at stake.

That's so easy to say from behind the safety and comfort of a computer monitor.

And it's easy to assume that you know enough about a person to know where they're coming from; behind a computer monitor ;)

It would be great if it was, but it isn't. Also I don't think anyone can honestly say that they would take action in a similar circumstance unless they've been in a situation where taking action puts their lives at risk. No one knows which side of the fight or flight response they'll land on until they are actually tested.

Beyond all my cynicism and pessimism I do have some measure of hope for humanity... we're getting there slowly.

There is no such thing as "achieving the impossible," by definition. I'd say these people deserve to be called heroes.

Should be, but isn't. There are places where a person can be mugged in broad daylight, and nobody will lift a finger to help them.

I wouldn't put myself at great risk to save a stranger, I can tell you that much.

Agreed. Unless you're close family or a friend, you're on your own.

Nah broseph, I know EXACTLY where your coming from. A position of safety. Its really as simple as that my man. When in a life threatening situation you have zero idea how the complex cocktail of chemicals in your brain will cause you to react, especially with no training at all how to handle the situation.

My point is just that saying "So a guy does something that anyone with a spine and the will to live should do and he's a hero?" is a silly statement. Someone being a hero is a subjective thing, so its perfectly fair for you to disagree on that. But "anyone with a spine and the will to live" is the sort of statement I find silly. I don't mean to bother you, It just comes off as this sort of tough guy speak I suppose.

Fight or flight situation and it looks like that train had some fighters on board.
