Vivienne is a snobby elitest? Black characters are not allowed to have flaws! That's offensive! On the other hand, black characters not having flaws is a case of reverse racism. So maybe there shouldn't be any black characters ... except that in itself is offensive.

The moral of the story is that someone will be offended no matter what you do. In fact, I'm probably offending someone right now.

(Incidentally, I like Vivienne. She's clever, interesting and quite easy on the eyes.)

I don't think she was a stereotypical black person...she was a stereotypical cruel, stuck up person. I could not stand her because of her mean, holier than thou, attitude.

People keep saying that Vivienne is stereotypically black because apparently she is "sassy", but to me everything about her character screams "power-hungry socialite", which stereotypically I would consider to be a white woman's role. I think of someone like Meryl Streep's character in The Devil Wears Prada.

Edit: In case it's not clear, I don't consider such stereotypes to be a good thing.

Expand, please, OP. Nothing stuck out to me but I'll defer to a better argument, if someone is willing to make a thorough case for it.

 

Vivienne primarily comes across as ambitious, ruthless, and successful to me. Whilst black women, on the whole, tend to be portrayed as more masculine (and all the unflattering negative connotations - such as being unattractive, demanding, aggressive - that come with that) than their white counterparts, I don't think this is the case with Vivienne either. She's got an immaculate sense of style and poise which fits perfectly in with high Orlesian society (which is very feminine), and is also very capable of tenderness and passion (as seen in her personal quest).

But as a mage? She was decidedly un-stereotypical. How many other mages have we met who have her opinions on the role of mages in the Chantry? Zero.

She's closest to a stereotypical Parisia- I mean Orlesian. Actually the writers added the twist that the black woman character is the one mage of the three who advocates curtailing the freedom of mages (i.e., rather than being a black person inevitably manifest as the spokesperson against slavery). House mage!

 

The other aspect to Vivienne is that she's an ode to Baldur's Gate 1's character Dynaheir- a black female human mage who was also wise, intelligent, and a bit stuck up (though of a bit more decisively "good" alignment than Vivienne). Recurring stereotype! All black female human mages in fantasy games are the same... all two of them...

She fits into the "Oreo" stereotype... A woman of a "deviant" origin (mage, I doubt being black matters) who happens to want power and overall more than it's offered to those hidden under the rug and dependant on constant welfare (the circle of magi) and chose to mingle with and turn herself into an upper class citizen (Orlesian noble) and then forgot about her roots and became all pretentious and power hungry.

 

Overall she's detestable, she often critizes apostates and other unfortunate pariahs while she was always protected from the world and went to grow surrounded by every luxury and blinding orlesian perk.

 

But she has the best specialization in the game and it's great to kill dragons, so I tolerate her in my parties.

I'd love to hear what features of Vivienne you think are stereotypes OP. I'm genuinely struggling to understand where your coming from, or what you find in her character arc to be a "hot mess".

The answer to your question is no, personally stereotypes always strike me as a odd. I prefer to get to know someone myself rather than putting them in a box.

Vivienne is a character that makes a lot of sense when it comes to the Mage conflict even if you may be more anti-circle. I like her character and how she calls people out on their bullshit.

She has the personality of a snooty, haughty, elitist, highborn socialite. (And she has a British accent with a false polite "Dahling!" verbal tick to match!)

 

The animation team could have very easily given her a different ethnic model (including but not limited to a white British lady) and it wouldn't have changed her one bit. (In personality or voice.)

 

Pretty much this^.  Her personality has nothing to do with her ethnicity--or any parallel to ethnicities from this world (as opposed to Thedas).
