Attack or armor penetration

I'm crafting mods for my daggers (Hakkons Mercy & Savage Thorn) and since there's only 1 diagram for single blade daggers, with metal as the main component, I can't do straight crit chance like I want. I've done some looking around and it seems people say low damage weapons like daggers do better with armor pen. while high damage weapons like 2 handed swords are better with attack. This made sense on my dual blade daggers but the higher level ones have higher damage then most of my 2 handers, so I'd think that rule of thumb goes out the window.

I assume stagger is useless so these are my 2 viable options, 11% attack or 18% armor pen. Which is better in this situation?

Armor pen is better on NM.

Well, the value of armor pen varies a lot based on class and difficulty (enemies have more armor on higher difficulties).  Note that doesn't necessarily mean 18% armor pen is *ever* better than 11% attack, just that we'd need to factor in some stuff to even figure out the calculations.  I can run some numbers if you want, just tell me the class(es) and difficulty.

Keep in mind that Sunder effects can also screw up this math -- several classes have "Sunder on crit" passives that will quickly reduce enemy armor to 0.

Perilous and nightmare on a rare occasion, usually silent sister, I usually take sunder on crit but can use that point elsewhere if it's an issue. Thanks for the explanation and help

It's not an issue at all -- it just means armor penetration is worth less compared to attack.  If you're constantly critting (and/or anyone else in your party has that talent and is constantly critting) then ignoring 18% of 0 armor doesn't help, y'know?

What skills do you use and what are your weapons?

Hakkons Mercy and Savage Thorn. I usually run hidden blades, throwing knifes, whirlwind or death blow, and charging bull or flashing steel. I'm only at like 24 cunning from prestige but run cunning or crit chance wherever possible, usually superb cunning amulet, and a superb crit chance ring, along with crit chance on my weapon mods (which tops out at 6% per on single blade dagger

AP if you're going NM, otherwise Attack. If you play NM, then you should have AP on, as Attack isn't going to help you much in Perilous, but AP will help you a lot in NM.

Ok thanks, should I do all 36% in ap, or is there a point where it's too much? I want to start doing NM more so I'm going to set up as though that's all I play.

I haven't forgotten this, just been busy doing a lot of math in another thread to prove Drasca wrong about some other stuff, will get to this later today.
