That's exactly what I like about the Mass Effect series more. In Dragon Age, Qunari and Elves get re-invented each game (design-wise) which makes the series lack some sort of consistency. Then there's also the completely different art style each time around. And have I mentioned the complete change of previous locations (like Redcliffe)?

Mass Effect feels more like a series as it just continues the story (and without aliens suddenly morphing into different beings when a few years pass).

Three games on Three Engines, unlike Mass Effect which used the same engine

I truly wish they had taken the approach of the Witcher, the first two were good stories but the third was almost perfect game play wise all those issues that irritated the hell out of me were gone, with Dragon Age they went the opposite! the first except for its graphics was exceptional, the following games just got prettier and in my opinion worse game play wise ... removing the Radial Wheel and Tactics to name the two biggest mistakes they made

You make an excellent point MouseHopper, and I'm sorry to get off-topic.

Unfortunately DAO was made before EA bought BioWare, and EA is more interested in pretty graphics and spiffy combat than the story and characters that made this franchise beloved to begin with.

I know that players love to demonize Electronic Arts but this is not the case
In November 2005, Bioware and Pandemic Studios have teamed up (while keeping their brands) and have passed under the control of VG Holding Corp., a company in which he invested a private fund (Elevation Partners).
On 12 October 2007 Elevation Partners has sold VG Holding Corp to Electronic Arts for $ 860 million.
Pretty much DAO was developed thanks to EA support.
Without EA there wouldn't be a DAO to begin with, and there wouldn't be a DAII and a DAI as well

Umm - can I just say "Dwarven King choice" here?

It's hilarious that people go on about the lack of background knowledge for the Olesian ruler choice and claim that DA:O did it so much better. Unless you played as a Dwarf, you had practically zero to go on in terms of a manifesto between Harrowmont and Bhelen. People complained about it bitterly at the time. I felt like I had WAY more to go on for the Olesian choice than I did for the Dwarf choice, and I haven't read the books or comics at all.

Well I don't know. I mean I got all the information I need from talking to all different people and there's a lot of them. Also your DN origins tells you a hell of a lot of information about your brother. And if you go and do that quest where a girl was forced to live in the slums for having a kid with someone without cast, it really makes you think of the "lesser evil" choices. Personally, I think that's one of the moral ambiguity and excellent writing that makes DAO shine.

Whereas with the Orlesian rulers, not a lot at all. In the ball if IIRC, you don't even get to talk to Celine, only to Gaspard and to a very small degree Briala, who by the way is more vague than Zeddicus Zul Zorrander. And the rest of the nobles there either don't talk to you or they have their own agendas.

It would have been great to be able to talk to Celine personally and get a feel of her motivations etc like Harromount and Bhelen. For example meeting the Castless dwarf's sister in the castle who happens to be carrying Bhelen's child is one of his many motivations to see the castless elevated.

All these little detailed things in DAO are the reason why I think it's the best by far in the series and except for maybe a minor graphic upgrade, Bioware should just leave it alone or it will become just another MMO.

Edit:
Also I don't think they have books and comics for DAO about the Orzammar dwarves or any dwarves for that matter, only the grey wardens and the ferelden monarchs. With the dwarves what you see.is what you get. In DAI, you need the Masked Empire ( i haven't read) to understand it . I think..

I roleplay this game to my heart's content. SPECIALLY with mods. I mean, with my Cousland she had plain hair to start with, and slick and all done up on the Royal Wedding mod using the mod that changes your character's appearance anytime :')

Not quite, because you spend a lot of time running around Orzammar getting to know the people. You run quests for dwarves in need, talk to the dwarven people about the two candidates and what their histories and policies are, you meet the two candidates' representatives and run quests for them there, then you meet the dwarf candidates and run a few errands for them and talk to them a bit, to get an idea of their character, worldview, and future plans, then go into the Deep Roads and choose your man.

With DAI, there is no direct involvement or slow process of getting to know the people or the candidates. You just hear there's an Orlesian Civil War going on all game (but don't actually witness or participate), then you show up at a party, meet and talk to each candidate for a grand total of 30 seconds, and then have to decide who gets the largest and most influential empire in Southern Thedas (I'm not talking Tevinter or Northern Thedas, to those who want to say "Got'cha!") based on that 30 second meeting. (With only, "Do I want the war-monger, the master politician, or the elven revolutionary?" to on.)

I don't really think you can compare the two.
