I admit that everyone should have the same level of protection and equally effective weapons, but where is the tactical advantage in matching suits?  The entire purpose behind uniforms was originally to easily differentiate combatants from non-combatants for the sake identifying those who fell under the protection of the "Laws of War."  It was also meant to help identify deserters, as the unique colors and buttons stood out even if they modified their clothes.  And then there was the bonus of it adding to a sense of Nationalism.  All of these notions are somewhat outdated, especially in a world where most soldiers wear uniforms that make them blend in instead of stand out (i.e. camouflage).

While nationalism is arguably outdated in ME, there are other purposes for military uniforms.

Camouflage - for in combat.  Everyone should have the appropriate camo on.

Identification - for in combat and out of combat.  In combat, for obvious reasons.  Out of combat, because you are a military unit, easy identification of people you may not know or people that may not know you.

Probably what I would argue the strongest reason:

Psychological.  Making every member feel like they are part of a larger whole/unit/etc.  This is a powerful tool and not just used in militarizes, but also in sports, some school, some work environments, etc.  Encourages conformity to the units ideals.

Also psychological for outsiders.  Presented as a unified front and its more imposing.

Obviously this wouldn't apply to leisure activities off-ship, but on ship, if you were incorporated into the unit, you would likely be issued a uniform.

(This argument presupposes we will be a military, or at least quasi-military unit, and that we will have our own ship.  Probably two safe assumptions.

EDIT: again, my personal preference, since this is a video game, that not everyone be in uniform all the time.  Even if that would make the most sense.

Normally I'd agree (and by my standards, his definition of roleplaying is so pure that it ceases to be any fun), but I'm curious because that last post seems inconsistent.

If I'm making decisions for multiple characters, then I'm roleplaying multiple characters. I can't be Shepard if I'm also Liara and Garrus. I might inhabit all three, but I am not each of them.

When I'm roleplaying Shepard (this is largely theoretical, since so much of ME's design is actively hostile to roleplaying), I perceive the world from Shepard's point of view. I effectively cease to exist, and Shepard makes the decisions.

If that's all I ever get to do, I'd like not to be able to excercise direct control over the other characters.

If I do exercise direct control over them, I have to be roleplaying, because otherwise it corrupts the roleplaying of Shepard by allowing me to metagame. There needs to be some sort of basis for my choices regarding each character.

Why do I equip Liara with a specific weapon with specific mods? Should I only be roleplaying Shepard when I do that? I don't like the idea that Shepard can make people do things and is always obeyed.

no i think being able to change their armor is good enough. nothing else is needed. they should remain as bioware intended them

Well, the OOC reason is that there's no equipment management AI for the squadmates.

No thanks. The reason is that I want to be another character in the world when I play and not some kind of god who changes her friends and rivals faces as she pleases. I mean the whole idea is bit weird and creepy to me, though I understand that some might like it and of course there is companion mods that alter looks always around as well so it's not something people aren't already doing.

agreed I prefer to leave my colleagues/partners in the game the same way besides there's enough optoins there to customise your own characters look that I don't rally need anything extra personally. Some upgrades are needed I think to the CC for the player character over the next few games so that can be improved but for me that's the only thing for me that needs modifying in this department.

Camouflage makes sense, but if both sides are camouflaged, what's the point?  I'll admit that psychological warfare plays a role, but I would argue that there are just as many advantages to not using uniforms.  I think it just comes down to whether you're a part of an army or a mercenary force.

I'm good with customizing just their armor and weapons.

While nationalism is arguably outdated in ME,

Say what?

In SWTOR then I played pure blood sith. I liked I can change Vette skin to red. Yes I am racist Humans with humans, elfs with elfs...

But i don't think I would care in ME or DA. I liked in DA2 and ME2 and ME3 companions have their own armor/clothes.

And it's so funny how all people change face NO NO you monster, but yes strip clothes and change them totally fine.

I am firmly against being able to customize the appearance of the squad members outside of armor/weapons.  I prefer ME1's approach (where you can change armor completely) over ME2's and ME3's approach where you just toggle appearance.  To be honest, I wouldn't mind if they did DA:I's approach, which is a combination of the two.  The armor changes it's appearance based on different character's style.

I really don't want to see the ability to change to the physical features of the characters.  The only reason why it works in SWTOR is because it's not a single player game, so it allows a lot of variation as the companions of other players run around past you.  I really don't want to see anything like this implemented in SP in any Bioware game.

I wouldn't mind seeing something similar to DA:I's approach either. On that note something similar to Shepard's ME3 armor customization for squadmates would be awesome also.

Wait, when you say fully customizing a squad mates appearance, do you mean like changing their faces and bodies or just changing their armor, equipment and weapons like a traditional party rpg?

I agree with the latter but disagree with the former.

I haven't played DA: Inquisition but I'm hearing that squad mates could wear the same armor but look differently depending on who wore it. That is a great idea and I would like to see it in Mass Effect too.

Don't need it, wouldn't mind it. I'm almost absolutely sure that this won't happen. I'd still rather a far deeper customization for the protagonist.

The problem with that was that sometimes they had armor that was better than the inquisitor's. By sometimes, I mean most of the time.

Yes it's sound great on paper but practically it's just waste of resources. DA:I have very limited armor selection for Inquisitor. I prefer more armor for our character  companions not kids let them dress on her own.

For a setting like Mass Effect, I'd prefer that there be a strict limit to this kind of thing. Like, instead of the entire getup just shapeshifting around the character, it might have a different pattern or even certain customizations made to it that the companion might have done. For example: if ME2 allowed us to actually equip our companions in proper armor similar to Shepards, Jack might have painted something on the helmet to reflect her personality, but the actual armor design would remain unchanged.

I prefer set character, it would break immersion for me if I can alter the companion's appearance. It works in game like Skyrim because it's an open world and companions don't have any personality. Most of the time, it feels like random NPC that happens to follow you. ME has indept backstory, personality, and such for the companions.

I already had promblems with those shades Shepard gave me. No change to say no to commander. I liked the red jacket, though. But to use shades I had to use everywhere... alternate_appearance-05-o.jpg

OK, so should we not be able to pick their weapons either? If we can acquire gear that is more effective, we should be able to equip followers with them too.

Why weapons and not armor? I say either both or neither. Surely by now, we can have a team that can choose their own weaponry. Amirite?

After watching this Video, I feel dirty. This is not Femininity, that's as close to Porn as it gets.
