I kind of think that was the actual point of OT. "Pointless banter" among a group of people who share common interests (gaming and Bioware games in particular) is usually called "friendly conversation."
None too friendly unless confirmed through conformity.
What is being referred to here by "pointless banter" is talk that may be more suited to a private conversation rather than subjecting others to it on a thread.

Such is the nature of a community. Which this place once was.
It had social in the title and everything.
So asking people to outright refrain from doing that would be odd given those circumstances.
But we're not operating under them any more so I guess that's fine. Now that Bioware clearly doesn't want a community.

It is this type of pointless banter that seemed the most useless part of OT. Trolling posts such as the ones I responded to from Memento Puddi & Liamv2 above encourages this type of useless banter. The moderation was, in this case, weak and unfocused. This may have been a result of the active moderator(s) at the time and not indicative of all the moderators. Perhaps, if there is a regular review of moderator actions(or inaction) or a report made to spur the issue, such can be addressed.

well, the community here is very small now. it doesn't feel large community like it was before. so i feel sorry for EA/whoever who made the move to close the off topic under pretense of that community is "toxic" as they claim it to be.
They didn't use that pretense in this case. That is speculation from the community because the reason they actually gave makes no sense.
The vibe most of us are getting is that the intention was to reduce the community, right? And that the reasons given weren't actually legit.
Add to that.. Off topic is a crime. Unless.. You know.. Its about gender politics..

That was a shout out to one of the fine contributors to the Off Topic thread "What are you currently listening to? II" as well as a commentary on some of the communities bond to the Off Topic that was shared at the time in this thread. While Joanna Newsom is an amazing talent and her music incredible, starting a thread about her in the ME:A section to promote her music would be contrary to the organization of the forum. Which, in a general sense, was the pointed direction of my question you quoted.

The derailing of threads not the threads themselves was the issue.
