For now, Off-Topic will remain closed. We understand (and as is evidenced by this thread) that this may upset some users, but our hope is this will create a stronger forum community in the long run. to those of you who are upset, please remember to express yourselves in ways that are respectful and in keeping with the terms of use of these boards.
I'm curious, how exactly does locking entire forums with no warning while people are mid-conversation create a stronger forum community?
How does doing it a second time in less than two years create a stronger forum community? Did it work the first time? If so, then when why was it necessary to do it a second time? If it didn't work the first time, then why would doing it a second time be expected to work better?
Why would giving no warning of these changes before making them create a stronger community? It feels very disrespectful to interrupt eveyone while they're in the middle of something, take it all away from them, and say, "Now while you sit there wondering why I've done this to you, I assure you that it's because I think it will make you happier."
Does that sound like something you would hear and think, "Yes, that's a reasonable thing to say/do?" How would you feel if someone did that you and then said, "But it's for your own good, and we hope you'll like it better?"
I think the message that you're not hearing from this thread is that common courtesy and respect from you and the site's staff are what we want. You could have discussed this with the community before locking everything. If you want to "create a stronger community" then begin by treating us with respect.
Respect is a two-way street.
