Sometimes I wonder if they have no media experts working at BioWare. Or anyone with a modicum of experience in community management.

Or perhaps they -want- to do the right things but are told No because of financial reasons.

Hey BioWare, do you need money? Should we donate so you can afford to open the Offtopic forum again? :P

Whatever the reason may be, some decisions you made in the past ~3 years were questionable already and this one is like kicking the community in the balls. Isn't it bad enough that BioWare is more present on reddit, facebook and twitter? This is your own forum, why do you not have a presence here?

All we get to hear from BioWare are complaints about the "toxic environment" of the forums, of the "negative" community... but what have you guys actually done to improve it?

Sure, merge and delete and censor and let's see what's left of the community in a year or so. Good luck with that. That no one told you what a bad idea this is amazes me. I can't believe all of BioWare is so removed from reality that they can't empathize with the common user anymore. Is this forum what you would like to use if you were just another gamer?

Sorry, those changes make no sense. I don't see what could possibly be improved for the community here.

I never felt like I was stingy with my likes, it's very odd that I never hit it before. Until now, of course.

Being out of likes is pretty much the norm for me. That being said, I agree with your analysis of what is going on. We are seeing a down sizing of a corporate social media presence and a redirecting of focus into other, less multilateral social media.

@Jensaarai:  Hahaha!

Well, if you let your ACCOUNTANT run your COMMUNITY...

Anyway, here's the deal, some bean counter thinks that collapsing forums and driving talk towards game improves sales and the point of the forum.  Maybe they'l need less moderators too.  Same bean counter probably looks at the forum as a liability.  That's their right, as much of a joke as that may be.  Most game companies I know would like to reduce their forums to a nice, one page ad telling everyone to buy their next DLC.  But of course, then they wouldn't be 'cool'  which they probably think also drives up sales.

Add that to the pressure as of late on BioWare to deliver, no offense.  There's been a lot of, in my opinion, BioWare digging its heels in rather than rolling with the punches.  The important point is if the forum is useful for people to come to, then they will.  Otherwise they will abandon it for something else. I think the risk for BioWare is when it is abandoned for something else, why then Mass Effect or Dragon Age?  Why not someone else's website that's better?

But if you look out there, the websites that are better?  Not many, if any?  This has been a cool forum to hang out in, if the game themselves have deteriorated over time (imo).  No need to concern about it any more.  BioWare probably has as much control over what they do as they are answerable to some guy in a back room going 'But nobody pays to use the forum!'  So we can all make amends or simply move onto a better community.  If that includes better games, is it really a problem?

I know, I know, I heart MEU too.  But that universe has ever been a problem since someone decided ending 100 hours of game play was okay to do with three colors....

Oh no you didn't. The HELL to the NO you just didn't!

I won't, under any imaginable circumstances, absolutely never pay for a goddamn offtopic DLC.

No, just no. And you should be ashamed for even mentioning this, in jest or any other fashion. EA is reading the forum and for all we know they would totally charge us for forum access if they see ANY sign of willingness to pay.

To answer a few questions:

We will continue to monitor how things go with these new changes and make future decisions based on the results.

For now, Off-Topic will remain closed. We understand (and as is evidenced by this thread) that this may upset some users, but our hope is this will create a stronger forum community in the long run. to those of you who are upset, please remember to express yourselves in ways that are respectful and in keeping with the terms of use of these boards. Anyone uttering threats or using excessively harsh and abusive language will receive moderation action.

Off-Topic discussions in other areas will be locked, and posters who are repeat violators or who are found to be purposefully derailing other areas will have their posting moderated. We will continue to allow master threads like the Twitter and Drinkquisition threads, that are slightly off-topic at times. That being said, people actively working to drive such threads further off-topic may start to receive moderation. Likewise, threads comparing BioWare titles to their contemporaries are also perfectly fine (though as always we do ask that people try to find an appropriate existing thread before starting a new one).

We are continuing to look at other changes to the forums (such as changes to groups) and ways we can improve the community as a whole, but nothing has been set as of yet. We want to see how these initial changes go first, and will decide what to do next from there.

"some" users? Jesus Christ, this is why Bioware is ridiculed by the gaming community. You are so out of contact and never communicate that it opens the already massive gap with your players. CLosing the OT thread without nay warning shows how you care about your fans.

Gallows humour. I jest. :D

But seriously, what other reason could there be if not a financial one? This change doesn't help the community in the slightest, it doesn't make it easier to navigate the forum and it definitely doesn't make it easier to find what you're looking for.

how about a DLC which gives you, lets say, 24 extra-likes/day, 10$ for 3 months?

Exactly this.

Before Bryan Johnson suddenly pop up here, he was all over reddit answering questions given reddit priority over BW forums, which doesn't make any sense, at least they should participate the same amount in the two realms.

Without the RP and Off Topic sections, I'm officially homeless, so I'm just going to do both of those here and see how it goes.  Maybe I'll warm up to the place.

"Well what the **** is this ****?" Cknarf scratched at the scruff on his chin, as he tried to post.

tf you mean I don't have permission to view this? Did I get another warning point or some ****?

"Oh god, how long as that been there?" He asked his coworker, looking at the morsel that had been jarred loose from his chin strokin'. He picked it up, and examined it closely.  He determined that it was the remains of a curly fry from Arby's. With a shrug, he placed it in his mouth, and got back to his regularly scheduled shitposting.

Aaaand here's a cat.

Is someone at Bioware drunk ?

"lel, lets close the OT section, see what happens."

"Oh those character threads definitely need to be moved in the combat, strategy and gameplay section"

"Rofl, let's delete and put back threads on the OT section we just closed"

"No, man....General discussion and Scuttlebutt isn't the same thing"

Honestly I only come to these boards for the off-topic as the game specific forums are just way to over-dramatic or demanding in terms of what people want as content in Bioware games.

I don't really have a reason to come here now that Off-Topic is gone.  So in a sense you are killing your community not growing it.

Oh heavens, if I become too rude a moderator might take action against me? To think then I couldn't post where I want to post... oh wait I already can't do that now...
"Stronger community"... typical press release buzzword BS. Thanks for "leveling up the experience" yet again Bioware.

At least be honest about it. Instead of the usual "we'll take your feedback into consideration" lie it would be a lot more polite to just say "go **** yourselves".

yeah, like last year when they announced the new group rules. "let us know what you think" or something similar, and no response ever, instead the thread got locked some days later.

Not many companies can claim to having succeeded in getting me out of bed in the middle of the night to turn on my PC and voice my discontent. Congrats, BioWare. Heard about this news as I was reading the forums for some giggles before falling asleep, as I enjoyed doing.

Closing Off-Topic?! It boggles the mind. Others have expressed why, so please assume I agree with them. There should at the very least have been a notice period to allow posters to organize themselves elsewhere.

Merging Spoiler and Non-Spoiler threads?! I have not seen that work well anywhere else - it just draws ire, bans and locks. Sure way to make sure your fans stay away from your forums the minute more specific info on a game is announced, or when it releases.

Thanks at least for trying to salvage the Looking For Group thread in ME3MP, which was (obviously) very useful...

Not looking forward to finding out what else was ninja-locked.

*facepalm*

Since the thread just shrank from removed posts I think that it's unlikely to get that big.
