I wonder why they didn't try recruiting some trustworthy forum members to privately talk with them and give them advice on how to improve things around here.
Private Skype calls, a private forum section, there are ways to go about this that would be proactive and helpful.
It's not about "improving the community" or even about saving on bandwidth. I think this simply boils down to wanting to kill forum activity so that they dedicate less resources on moderating it. On social media, they can pick and choose who they respond to, and sites have internal reporting systems so BioWare can just ignore the crap going on there. Whereas with here, it's their forum, so they can't ignore it and need to hire people to monitor it.
I would be unsurprised if they have been angling at this ever since the forum change. Priestly noted his loathing for the Lobby and moderation policies have
always slanted towards getting rid of non-BioWare oriented discussion via the most heavy handed means, even if it means splintering the community. Off-topic groups are gone, off-topic section is now gone, even the game forums are getting a reshuffle.
They simply want to make it easier on themselves to monitor and moderate the site. Hell, that's why BotMods were brought in. Volunteer Moderators demanded community engagement and some level of co-ordination, which they aren't willing to give. Who's the Community Manager nowadays? Is it still Merizan? I have no idea.
BioWare see this place as a burden, and their actions indicate that they are happy to cut the community to pieces if it means less work on their end. This is not just an overreaction to this decision, but a steady and unmistakable trend that started when the BotMods were introduced and the likes of Woo and Priestly were let go.
